UPDATE PM: In the finals, The Voice went up by two tenths to a 4.2 demo rating. Adjusted up by .1 were the Dancing With the Stars, the two New Girl episodes and Ben and Kate.
PREVIOUS AM: It was a ho-hum premiere week Tuesday with no standouts, no unmitigated disasters and mostly soft starts for new series. A slew of new and returning shows were schooled by veteran NCIS, the oldest program on the night, whose 10th season premiere beat them all to rank as Tuesday’s top show in total viewers and adults 18-49 with some of its best numbers ever.
Fox’s new two-hour comedy block was slow out of the gate. Anchor New Girl delivered a 2.7/9 in adults 18-49 in both premiere airings at 8 PM and 9 PM. That was down 43% from the fast national for the show’s big series premiere last fall and a tenth from its season finale. New Girl was used as a launching pad for new comedies Ben And Kate (2.0/6) at 8:30 PM and The Mindy Project (2.4/6) at 9:30 PM. Both were down considerably from the season premiere of Raising Hope behind New Girl last year (3.1/8 at 9:30 PM)
NBC’s lineup took a hit against increased competition. The Voice (4.0/12) was down 11% from its fast national last week. Facing first-run comedies for the first time, Go On (2.7/7) dropped 21%, while The New Normal (2.0/5) was down 9%. Go On tied New Girl as the highest-rated half-hour on the night. At 10 PM, Parenthood (1.8/5) was flat with last week.
CBS’ returning dramas were solid. NCIS (4.1/12, 20.2 million total viewers) was down only a tenth from the fast national for its season premiere last fall. NCIS: LA (3.4/9, 16.7 million) was down 6%. Both series had their second-most-watched openers ever. At 10 PM, new drama Vegas pulled in a 2.5/7 in adults 18-49. In the demo, that was down 14% from the premiere of Unforgettable in the slot last fall but easily topped the 10 PM hour. Given the subject matter — 1960s Las Vegas — and star Dennis Quaid, Vegas was expected to be older-skewing. In total viewers, it drew an impressive 14.7 million, the largest audience for a fall Tuesday 10 PM premiere in 10 years, since Judging Amy in 2002. In 18-49, it was CBS’ lowest-rated Tuesday drama premiere in 7.5 years, since Century City in March 2008. CBS swept Tuesday night, winning every hour of primetime in both total viewers and adults 18-49.
On ABC, Dancing With The Stars‘ downfall continues. The aging reality series (2.0/6) was down sharply (by 31%) from last fall’s Tuesday premiere and was the lowest-rated Tuesday opener ever. Private Practice (1.9/5) was down 32% from last fall’s premiere behind Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday but up 12% from its Tuesday debut. It was also up 6% from its season finale in May but down 14% from last year’s season premiere of Body of Proof in the Tuesday 10 PM slot.
Compared with last year’s premiere Tuesday, NBC was the only network in positive territory among adults 18-49, up 17%. CBS was down 8%, ABC 17% and Fox a big 37%.

And just like that, The Mindy Project — the most over-hyped sitcom premiere in history — is greeted with a resounding, 50-state yawn.
Good to see.
Depends on who is telling the story. Vulture is pushing Mindy Kaling as the next great comedy icon, so her debut was framed as a good one over there. Yeah it held onto New Girl’s audience, but New Girl’s audience will probably shrink a bit further and the hype on The Mindy Project was out of control.
Mindy Kaling was exposed for having her PR team publish the same quotes over and over again Vulture and Jezebel — “I wish she could be my best friend,” that sort of thing. I would do the same if I were in her shoes. That said, I really loved the show, but her personality does grate on me.
I thought it was just me… I was thinking “Am I supposed to love it?” I chuckled but the way people talked about it, I thought Carol Burnett and Lucy had been reborn
The “New Normal” is unfunny and smug. Exactly the stuff tv exex love.
With shows like NN, Mindy and Ben and Kate, networks so desperately want to be hip. Hip people don’t watch TV. CBS figured that out a long time ago, and they make a mint.
What’s the big craze on cable? “Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo.” Nary a fedora wearing urbanista in sight.
If hip people watch comedy on TV, it’s cable – Archer, South Park (still), Adult Swim, Louie CK – the FCC doesn’t allow broadcast to compete with that.
The fact this completely on point comment comes from a commenter named “Jethro” (about as unhipster a nmae as you can get) makes it even better.
True. Advertisers and marketers assume EVERYBODY is a hipster or aspires to be one. Look around, people, they’re not and they don’t (thankfully).
how was the New Normal the highest rated comedy of the night (tied with New Girl) when it’s numbers weren’t as good as Go On? Am I missing something?
Vegas was disappointing. Love Chiklis and Moss but it didn’t pop. As for DWTS, when will they learn? Nobody watches results shows, even if you watch the show – just tune in @ 9:58 for the result and check out whatever else on youtube the next day. It was down, The Voice was down. And The New Normal is the same old crapola.
Vegas Rocked! I think they could use a little more of Lambs son to get the demo in the right slot.
Seriously? Lambs son was the worst performance in the pilot — way too over the top. Was disappointed the show falls to the paradigm of CBS murder of the week. They want character dramas — but close ended procedure will always win.
Biggest issue with Mindy Project is MINDY – she’s not strong enough yet as an actress to anchor a show, and her a character isn’t particularly likable or realistic…would a real doctor on call be THAT far away from a hospital on a date?
No. My wife is regularly on call, and when we go out those nights (rare) we plan our evening around the hospital. When an On Call physician is called in, it’s a “right the hell NOW” situation, not “oh just walk in when it’s convenient” sort of thing. Not that Mindy or her writers would know this, as medical shows are laughably inaccurate as a whole.
Vegas needs to be on a cable network. CBS makes this a pass.
The networks really need to leave show like Vegas up to FX, HBO, and AMC. NBC, ABC, and CBS are completely out of their depth. The level of cheese and over acting was absurd.
Yep and Vegas needs a better cast. Quaid and Chiklis… Chiklis as a mobster, i mean really?
Chiklets is James Gandolfini light in this loser.
I concur. If he ain’t beating guys to a bloody pulp and frothing at the mouth then why cast him? It’s what he does best.
New Normal is not. This unpleasant show is on its way out. Mindy Kalling is the weakest link on the Office. Why would we want to watch her for 30 min per week? Go On is Ok, but will still get full season order. New Girl is Ok too. Loved Vegas. This show will build.
Agree about The New Normal. Just watched on HULU, I’ve seen all 4 episodes now. It’s getting worse by the week. I’d rather watch a show with Goldie and her daughter as the stars and the gay dad’s as supporting characters.
I read recently that Ryan is inspired by the comedies of Norman Lear. The difference, however, between Ellen Barkin’s character and Archie bunker, however, is that Archie was a real character. Ellen’s character is not. In real life, people like her do not just spout racist and homo-phobic comments like that. Racism, etc. is usually more subtle – but Ryan can’t write real or subtle – he writes with a sledge hammer. Basically, she is a re-tread of Jane Lynch’s character in Glee. There is not a real bone in her body.
as a gay minority, i’m here to tell you that people absolutely DO spout racist homo-phobic comments like that. turns out… people that say those things don’t think that they’re a racist or homophobic person, but rather “this is the way everyone should think.” with that said, i’ll concede that ellen’s character is a bit over-the-top… but no more so than the rest of the show, so she totally fits in with the tone of the show.
Get over it.
You first. Your feeble, elementary level rhetoric doesn’t work so well out of the sandbox, does it? Not that you would know how to tell the difference…
This year is a disaster for FOX. They are going to be down year to year on every night. New girl down 50% from last years premiere. Yikes
I agree, Fox has nothing even slightly worth checking out this year, worse even than dull old CBS.
Raising Hope is the only Fox show I watch anymore, just because I love the cast.
I like Vegas be honest
NCIS rocks last night I wonder what happen to Ducky and the gang
It was gooddd best NCIS season premire ever to date I think so
Vegas wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be, but I’ll take it over Forgettable (sorry, I mean Unforgettable) any time. I’ll be tuning in again next week.
I thought Vegas was GREAT. Sure it had a touch of pilot-itis (ten million things to set up), but what a cast (Quaid, Chiklis, O’Mara)! I’ll definitely tune in next week.
Me, too! I wasn’t expecting another Boardwalk Empire, but something above a standard procedural. The acting is great (Chiklis is so good) and the characters are interesting. Plus the show looks very good.
Yeah, shooting Santa Clarita for Vegas just looks great.
Mindy Project – “Blah, blah, blah, blah, Katherine Heigl!” “Blah, blah, blah, Kim Kardashian!”
can we have any more pop culture references, Mindy? Lazier writing than Chelsea Handler. I lasted 5 minutes and was done.
I don’t mind her and tuned in out of curiosity, but halfway through I was thinking “shut up, shut UP, SHUT UP!!!”
The problem with The Mindy Project is you have to actually LIKE Mindy to enjoy the show — and most people don’t like her….. the people I’ve spoken to about it find her incredibly annoying.
I forgot what Gawker said about her, but there was a great line about how she’s not offensive, she’s just kind of like a living “re-tweet” which hits the nail on the head.
I have a man crush on Chris, though…. I gotta say…. ever since Giant Mechanical Man….

There is really no hook to Mindy other than a chick who’s romantic expectations were formed by watching romantic comedies. For me, it’s a complete rip-off of Brdiget Jones – even down to the fact that she keeps sleeping with the cadish English guy. Overall, Mindy feels like she’s trying way too hard to be cute/quirky. She gives off that image of someone tap-dancing as fast as they can and waving around their jazz hands. Hey, look at me. Aren’t I cute!
ABC needs to have its new scheduling guru think of something new – and fast! Happy Endings and Apartment 22 will get buried by FOX & now NBC. I say move more of a family-friendly, broad sitcom hour of Last Man Standing & Malibu Country to either counter program at 8-9pm or 9-10pm. Opening the night with the two family-based sitcoms could help a sagging DWTS. ABC stop trying toi make your comedy brand “hip” and “affluent”, leave that to FOX & NBC.
Vegas was so slow and the editing felt all out of whack, especially during the fight scenes. I was expecting much more from this. It almost put me to sleep. I loved Goodfellas and Casino, but this was not up to par… not even close.
It was a total CBS snooze fest…
So much for all that Scorsese-cred. Les can’t get out of his own way.
The New Normal is dreadful. period.
I like Mindy, may fave new show. And Nat is awesome on Ben and Kate.
But I’m female so I relate.
A female writer, apparently, which is why you “relate.” The show was written for you, and you alone, which is why no one else is interested.
That DWTS results show was dreadful. The first hour was painful so of course, I sampled other programs. Still do nto see why PARENTHOOD does not pop. It is as perfect a broadcast series one can get! The Fox comedies underwhelm me. And THE NEW NORMAL for all the hype is not fun to watch. I do like GO ON. The post about counterprogramming with family-friendly standard comedies has merit. There is way too much hip and snark on Tuesday night.
I thought last night’s New Normal was actually its best yet and pretty funny. Ellen Barkin’s Republican arguments were well done and actually held their own against the Democratic side. Seems like everyone’s made up his or her mind not to like the series while I see it finally coming into its own.
Any chance we can move all of these new shows to Cinemax?
The Affirmative Action Project, I mean, The Mindy Project was an all around bad idea to begin with. The New Normal is too preachy and a shameless take on Modern Family.
Please explain how the Mindy Project is affirmative action?
Yeah, Mindy is, um, “affirmative action” — because all of those new network comedies starring white folks are tantamount to sheer, laugh-a-thon genius, right?
It is amazing to me that in this day and age the minute some ignoramus sees a brown face in (pick one) a blue-chip law firm, on an Ivy League campus, at a Wall Street hedge fund or, yes, starring in a network sitcom the first thought that comes to his or her alleged mind is Affirmative Action.
Can we please stop with all of the Neanderthal knuckle-dragging? Such unfounded whining is as tired as it is idiocy.
I deliberately avoided any news about “Vegas”, hoping to be blown away. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a very pedestrian procedural. I was hoping for “Boardwalk Empire” and got a below average cop show. After sixty minutes, I knew nothing about the characters. It was like CBS was so eager for the cowboys to start asking questions and acting like experienced police that they forgot that what made Goodfellas and Casino memorable were the characters! These people are stick figures.
I’m gone. Next.
Bingo! You hit the nail on the head. I want to love the characters.
NCIS continues to excel on so many levels that all the new shows can’t even get to the first floor. It will be on another ten years
Ben and Kate was absolutely terrible. Truly dreadful. The only entertaining and appealing actors were the British girl from Doc Martin
and the good-looking two-timing would-be boyfriend. They should have built the show around them. Seriously! The guy who plays Ben absolutely has to have his teeth fixed. They are the worst teeth in television history. So distractingly bad that they ruin every scene he’s in.
Jan — Yes, you are missing the part where it says, GO ON “was the highest rated half hour of the night (tied with NEW GIRL).”
Mindy Kaling is NOT the comedy queen her PR hype machine has made her out to be. She’s on par with Chelsea Handler-style writing/delivery. It’ll be interesting if she makes it to the end of the first season. Stranger things have happened, though. Look at Whitney Cummings???
You can throw that Aziz guy onto that pile too…
Loved his show on MTV but he alone is terrible.
