A week before the official start of the season, we have the first big debut of fall 2012. It goes to NBC’s Revolution, the network’s first big scripted premiere in quite awhile. JJ Abrams and Eric Kripke’s post-apocalyptic drama opened with a 4.1/11 in adults 18-49 and 11.7 million viewers at 10 PM last night. In 18-49, Revolution was the top drama premiere on NBC in five years, since the ill-fated Bionic Woman in September 2007 (5.7); the top drama debut on any network in three years, since ABC’s V in October 2009 (5.2); and the highest-rated 10 PM premiere in five years, since ABC’s Big Shots in September 2007 (4.5). It eclipsed the debut of NBC’s Smash in the slot last season, which aired on the highly promoted night after the Super Bowl with a bigger lead-in from a Super Bowl-boosted The Voice. This is the highest-rated 10 PM drama telecast on any network in almost three years, since a January 2010 episode of ABC’s Private Practice. The only element of concern in Revolution’s big opening is the 14% drop-off between the first and the second half-hour, but this is an issue a lot of 10 PM shows face.
From 8-10 PM, The Voice (4.6/12) was up 12% from its fast national last week. Versus the comparable telecast last season, it was down 23%. NBC won the night in 18-49 (4.4/12) and total viewers (12.8 million).
On Fox, the season premiere of Bones in its new Monday 8 PM slot (2.3/6) was down 30% from the series’ season premiere on Thursday last fall but up 21% from last season’s finale. The series premiere of The Mob Doctor (1.5/4, 5.1 million) did only marginally better than Fox’s big flop in the slot two years ago, Lone Star (1.3/3, 4.1 million). It also was down 52% from the two-hour debut of the now-defunct Terra Nova on Monday last fall.
Not a lot of action on the other networks. ABC aired the CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night To Rock special (1.7/4), which was flat with last year’s August telecast but may be adjusted down due to NFL pre-emptions. The CW aired two back-to-back originals of LA Complex (0.4/1, 0.2/1).

That’s a damn shame but while wondering how long it’ll take to get over here (UK) would like to point out JJ Abrams is one of the best modern film and television content creators, so if this is a slow burn sit back and give it more time…
They use guns….
Revolution — a few questions. Why when the world loses electricity do only very good looking people who can’t act and have no character, survive? Why when there are more modern guns in Los Angeles than there are muskets and crossbows in the entire world, are there no modern guns and everyone has muskets and crossbows? And there are millions upong millions of bullets around. And they could still be manufactured (they’ve been around longer than electicity). And what about steam power? Trains, tractors, yes, even cars ran on steam without electricity. All you need is fire, and they obviously have that. Did everyone just give up in despair when they could no longer text their friends? And since the militia consists of a few tents in an open field, has anyone considered getting a small mob together to destroy them? Just wondering.
Its called a Plot Hole Otto, its what JJ Abrahms and others of his ilk who do not understand the basic mechanics of everyday life so they write scifi so they dont have to actually explain why things happen. Its called bad writing, sort of like all the plot holes in Falling Skies, where high tech aliens cant see large groups of people moving and living in plain view of their space crafts.
Ignoring the obvious plot holes I immensely enjoyed the pilot for Revolution. It beats the crap out of these so called talent shows & we need more shows of this genre. I also have high hopes for the upcoming Last Resort on ABC.
REVOLUTION= awful script mixed in with a lot of overacting. I wanted to like it. Went in with best of intentions, but wow, now I just don;t care.
I am not surprised with Revolutiom big numbers. The pilot was really good. All the show was great, the plot, the cast ….
I cannot wait to watch more.
NBC must be happy.
Derivative doesn’t even begin to describe it.
For post apocalypse fare, everyone is too clean.
The continuity/consistency issues are howlers. Why do muzzle loaders work when what looks to be a Colt .45 ACP seems to work just fine in a pinch?
The wranglers deserve a shout out, all the equine actors did well.
When it wasn’t painfully, on the nose, earnest, expository stuff, the dialog was just plain awkward.
“Hunger Games” was a pretty good book.
For all its flaws, “The Postman” was well staged.
Warming over pointless episodes of “Lost” is embarrassing.
I don’t think that Mob Doctor is a real show. I see it advertised, but does that mean it exists.
A bit of a letdown, but I’ll be back in hopes of improvement.
I struggled through Revolution…beyond boring. There’s a reason Hunger Games was a trilogy; I seriously doubt enough interesting story lines can be developed from this concept for a series. Beautiful People had a much more promising concept for series plot lines and a better cast, frankly. NBC really picked the wrong sci-fi show to work with Grimm.
Totally unimpressed, and I just couldn’t empathize with any of the characters or even have sympathy for the general situation of power loss on a massive scale the way this was written, directed, and acted. It’s not terrible, but it’s not something I’m going to watch, even as a least objectionable programming choice.
Revolution was boringgggggggggggggggg however I did like Mob Doctor
My wife and I are seniors (not in the business). We watched and were shocked at how bad this show was on all counts. Admire JJ Abrams and the director, but they sure missed the mark on this one. It won’t last more than six weeks.
I thought the premiere was awful. What a dissapointment! The electricity has been off for 15 years but somehow the main character (who happens to be the most boring one dimensional character I have seen) has on brand new clothes and so does the “militia” boy that happened to follow her. I cannot believe somebody actually compared it to LOST. LOST has a legacy that will never be duplicated. Dystopian young adult novels so popular right now. I would recommend whoever is in charge pick up a few and grab a couple of tips.

Oh my Mob Doctor…..errrrrrr fail…..bring back ALCATRAZ!!!!!!!!
Seriously. I watched the pilot. I felt like I had already seen it. It was up against nothing. Week 2 bring season premiers of Castle and Hawaii Five-0 (my personal preference). If it does not get out of this slot, it will not bode well for Revolution.
Guns and ammunition were simpler then. It would be a lot harder to make modern ammunition without electricity but not impossible.
This gun thing doesn’t add up. There currently an estimated 300 million privately held firearms in the United States TODAY and production grows every day. Those aren’t going to hit disappear just because some tin pot dictator of a militia the show acknowledges only has regional authority, decides to outlaw them. The effectiveness of any kind of search & seizure would be questionable NOW, much less in a world where the military doesn’t have helicopters and IR sights and Satellite communications and radios. No way no how. As for ammunition – In the United States tosay we currently manufacture almost 10 billion rounds of commercial ammo a year. You have to figure most of that geta stockpiled. And, its actually quite easy to make ammo without power – you just can’t mass produce it. You can even smelt lead for the projectile, my neighbors a big gun enthusiast – he makes his ammo from cradle to grave.
No, I suspect the real reason for the lack of Gina resides on the other side of the 4th wall: some isu at NBC thought it’d be cooler and edgier than the likes of Falling Skies, if they took the Hunger Games route and contrived a scenario in which it became necessary for everyone to use non-firearm weapons. Another quibble: the world has been a collapse shit heap for 15 years, so who’s been training all these people to EXPERT swordsmen?
This stuff is what bugs me about Abrams. He’s lazy about detail and to some degree I think assumes the casual viewer is only engaging 20% of his brain at the time.
