SUNDAY AM, 5TH UPDATE: It was a revived box office at the start of the domestic weekend with
respectable grosses for both opening but non-original pics. That’s a relief for Hollywood after weeks of lackluster threatrical sales and the lowest-grossing weekend in at least four years. But total moviegoing this weekend is only $86M, or -15% from last year when The Lion King in 3D made $30.1M. Then again, it had not been available on home entertainment since 1994 and was a ‘Disney Vault’ item much in demand in 3D. In contrast, Disney/Pixar’s 3D version of its 2003 blockbuster Finding Nemo (2,904 theaters) took in only $17.5M for the weekend despite the lack of fresh family fare in the cineplex. It also made $5.1M from 7 territories representing 22% of the international market. Which brings its global cume from all releases to $890.2M.
Sony/Screen Gems/Constantin Films’ 3D Resident Evil: Retribution (3,012 theaters) is the 5th installment in the sexy sci-fi/horror franchise and was an easy #1 against the clownfish. It opened with $8.8M Friday helped by $665K from midnight screenings. It topped out at $21.1M for the domestic weekend, which is less than the franchise’s 4th installment. No matter because it makes its real moolah overseas. Indeed, Resident Evil: Retribution grossed a big $50M overseas for a total $71.1M worldwide in just its first few days of release. That beats the last one overseas by about 28%. “This could be the biggest one yet,” a Sony exec gushed to me. Exit polls showed that 64% of the audience was male and 45% under age 25. About 48% experienced the film in 3D, 34% saw it in 2D, 14% viewed it in IMAX, and another 4% viewed it in other PLF theaters.
Frankly, the blogosphere has not always been kind to this series or the writing/directing/producing team of Paul W.S. Anderson and Jeremy Bolt (Impact Pictures). But I can’t argue with RE‘s amazing success. To give you an idea, the previous 4 films have an aggregate worldwide gross of $675M. The last film made $296M. If this 5th film could get to $325M worldwide, then the franchise hits $1B in worldwide box office. And I haven’t even mentioned the big DVD numbers. All on an aggregate budget of a mere $250M. How many filmmakers have created that return on investment? Also, Anderson has now shot his last 3 films in 3D, using the Vince Pace rigs, and is one of the few Hollywood directors comfortable with it. As a major player I respect emailed me this weekend, “Paul should get his due. He’s one of the most under-appreciated directors out there.”

And fresh from the Venice and Toronto International Film Festival circuit, The Weinstein Company’s much ballyhooed anti-Scientology movie The Master began its platform run and Oscar campaign by breaking art house records. Director Paul Thomas Anderson and talents Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman got off to a great start in limited release in 5 art houses (3 in NY and 2 in LA) grossing $729,745. Weinstein picked up the film from Annapurna for worldwide distribution. The indie studio was hoping to beat the art house record of $130K per screen set by Focus Features’ Moonrise Kingdom this year – and did just that with $145K.
Also of note, the same distribution company Rocky Mountain Pictures that released the hit political documentary 2016: Obama’s America on Friday opened Last Ounce of Courage. Both pics were in the Top 10 on Friday but fell out by Sunday. The newest pic aimed at “freedom-loving faith-based” audiences should have received a slow rollout. Instead, it debuted in 1,407 theaters with a marketing push including TV buys. Once again, this kind of movie produces strong pre-sales then grosses dwindle. It opened with a $1.7 weekend. Not sure if this pic has legs.
Finally, I’d be remiss not to mention Roadside Attractions’ and Lionsgate’s Arbitrage for the biggest U.S. opening ever for a film debuting in both movie theaters and On Demand — and by a wide margin. Because it made $2M this weekend on only 197 screens for a per screen average of $10.5K. The Richard Gere starrer written and directed by Nicholas Jarecki had Roadside boss Howard Cohen kvelling to me. Amd the film also is #2 on iTunes overall and #1 in both Drama and Thriller categories.
A fantastic weekend for the indies… Don’t miss Deadline’s specialty box office report later today.

It was actually very good!
Best in the series
Really? Cause the trailers made it look like the story made less sense than ever before…at least when the trailers actually took time to hint at the story instead of showing the signature 3D slo-mo moments…
RE4 made 25M I believe in China 2 years ago. Wouldn’t be surprised this one does 100M there. It’s great!
I would, no way RE5 does 100M in China, that’s crazy. TDKR or TASM won’t make that amount there, what makes you think this film will. To my knowledge the only film this year that has reached 100M in China is “The Avengers”. You’re asking for an unrealistic jump in box office from one film in the series to the next one, 40-50M perhaps.
“This could be the biggest one yet,” a Sony exec tells me. “Look for a big worldwide number Sunday morning.”
Translation: Please god, please please please don’t let this tank as hard overseas as it did here *sobs* must paint a pretty picture must think positive don’t show fear *sobs*
Yeah, 100m is a stretch, but this one has a Chinese actress and the franchise built a big fan base off the last one. I predict 60m to 70m for China and most likely the highest grossing territory. That would be a first, wouldn’t it?
However, Resident Evil 5 will have to settle for 2nd place this weekend.
NEMO is going to kill it
Or not.
Or not
I’m happy to be proven wrong on this, although NEMO could see a big increase Sat/Sun
The first Resident Evil film didn’t open at number one thanks to the first Ice Age movie, so I don’t think it’ll really matter in the end.
It is astoundingly ridiculous how much bigger in scope and better in style this is to the last 4. And that is what I get from the trailer. It feels like they are rebooting it more than anything else. Well-done to the folks behind it, well-done.
Don’t be so quick to judge this movie by its trailer. The “scope” isn’t what you think it is and the movie has absolutely no plot or characters worth caring about. Yes, it has a spectacular final shot, but all the RESIDENT EVIL movies do, to get fans hoping that maybe the *next* one will be better.
The resident evil films are not what you’d call good but they are immensely entertaining. I’d glad take 5 more of them if it meant something like transformers 4 was canned.
The Resident Evil Franchise will end with number 6 apparently.
The ending of Retribution sets up the finale film nicely….and the last shot is pretty spectacular
It won’t matter who wins the weekend. Sherlock Holmes made $200 mil and never held the top weekend spot. I’d like to give credit to the industry for the success they’ve earned with both the Resident Evil franchise and the 3D re-release of Animated Classics. I wish them the best with these two releases. Though, despite my respect, I’m not going to see either of these movies in the theater.
Resident Evil Afterlife grossed 296 million worldwide…
It would be great if this one could clear 300 million but i think it will actually gross around 250 million
The last three sequels have grown in worldwide gross vs. their predecessors. I see no reason why Retribution can’t do the same, if it really is the best one to date…
It’s disappointing that the most enjoyment I’ve gotten out of my many trips to the movies since June ended (and not counting the little-seen Paranorman or Beasts of the Southern Wild) was seeing re-releases of Finding Nemo, Jaws and Raiders of The Lost Ark on the big screen.
Then use better judgement and don’t see everything. Send a message to Hollywood.
Maybe it’s me, but 2 hours of The Master felt like 20.
Resident Evil was pure eye cand, but that’s exactly what fans of the game wanted. As a story it had so many flaws, but Paul W. S. Anderson knows his audience and after a horrible oart 3 and a decent oart 4 this is exactly what was needed for the franchise. The 3d sets new reference standards for depth in image and Mr. Anderson learned a lot about the mind f@?! thaf 3d actually is since he shot RE:4. As a huge fan of 3d I hope he teaches some other directors what he did with staging of the actors to obtain the great 3d he had in the film as that really is what is needed right now so that 3d can continue to evolve as there are no experts yet in 3d due to it really being in its infancy. I will see Nemo in 3d tomorrow and can’t wait for Dredd, Hotel Transylvania, Frankenweenie and Silent Hill to see if and how 3d is evolving.
A lot of press is mistakenly reporting the the film was shot with the Cameron / Pace 3D rigs when in fact it was shot with the CINESAIL 3D SYSTEM using 3Ality Technica Atom 3D rigs. The Cinesail system was developed by the film’s main unit and 2nd unit Directors Of Photography knowing they would need an extremely mobile and flexible system in order to shoot so much action in 3D. The decision to shoot with the new system was backed 100% by Paul WS Anderson and the producers of the film.
I can’t believe people actually watch that garbage franchise “Resident Evil”.
Paul W.S. is a hack
What does it say when the top grossing films are a 5th in a marginal franchise and a new 3D version of a classic animated movie? The very fact that there are so many posts about the quality of Resident Evil says it all.
What a depressing state of affairs in the film industry.*
* independent films still have meat, but lack substantial and effective distribution in many cases
LOL
and these are the same people week after week whining that Hollywood is not putting out quality movies. And when there are some really amazing films to pick from they run to see this and talk about the “quality” of this film and wonderful it is.
It was in 3D and still didn’t pull in 30+ million dollars. If this was some other none 3D film the people here would be screaming it was a Bomb.
Wow just WOW.
The last two were so so bad. I was actually angry that I had wasted my time watching them. Won’t be fooled again.
Whoever says this movie is good, seriously needs get their eyes checked.
This is by far one of the worst atrocities I have seen in a very long time. Bad acting, bad script, bad directing and some of the worst fx I have had the displeasure to ever see.
I completely understand what I was walking
into, but holy crap! I think I’ve seen better acting on the Sy fy channel.. This is why Hollywood is on a slump. They keep releasing this drivel.
The only thing in this article that thrills me is that Dinesh D’Souza’s documentary, “2016: Obama’s America” remains in the top ten. There is nothing worthwhile at the cineplex to attract an adult audience. I am eagerly awaiting Ben Affleck’s Argo and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master.” Until then, I’ll read…
“2016″ is preaching to the right-wing choir. “Last Ounce of Courage” glorifies the US military and opened on 9/11. “Argo” is pro-government agitprop based on the trailer alone.
The endless hard sell is just one reason adults are staying away from the movie theater.
You obviously haven’t seen 2016: Obama’s America. It’s far from a hatchet job that is preaching to the far right. It just uses President Obama’s very own words and actions to lay out a very credible explanation for his ideology and agenda. The left wingers just hate to publicly acknowledge that this president has been mentored by communists and socialists his entire life—its not refutable and Obama himself has publicly stated a belief in redistribution of wealth. There is no stretch in what this movie presents nor is any of it taken out of context.
As you see it.
Hear, hear! A lot people bash without seeing. They probaly wrote book reports without reading the books, too.
Everyone has a belief in the redistribution of wealth. It’s called being part of the civilized world. If you don’t like it, go to that fabulous laissez-faire regulation-free paradise Somalia. You won’t have to pay any taxes for those greedy cops, firefighters, or teachers.
2016 may be a box-office success but as far as accuracy goes it’s a joke. The worst part I saw was D’Souza asking some random African on camera whether or not it would have been better if Europeans kept Africa colonized longer, for their own good. Ugh. Absolutely repugnant.
2016 is disappointingly a dreadful film. There’s no substantive evidence to back it’s paranoid, conspiracy theories that are both inflammatory and filled with lies as most of the content is taking wildly out of context. It aims at the lowest common denominator and for those people, the film hits its mark.
didnt you post this last weekend? jealous much?
Why would he be jealous of a paranoid right-wing propanganda film?
No, Dark Rabbit– Rob’s comment was posted today. You aren’t as uninformed as the audience of D’Souza’s film seems to be, are you?
I am a Republican and will vote for Romney but I really did not buy D’Souza’s thesis that Obama is primarily an anti-colonialist due to his absentee father’s influence and some of the older males who were around him as a child. I see Obama more as an intelligent guy who is lacking in political skills and determination. If you don’t like D’Souza’s film make your own. No one will burn down your house.
You may not like Obama but if you think he lacks “political skills” you need your head examined.
Obama is an incumbent President running wih unemployment at over 8% and the consumer confidence index at levels where NO incumbent President has ever been reelected and he’s running against the best-financed Republican opponent in history, and yet, Obama is winning by a healthy margin and crushing Romney on likability.
You can say what you want about Obama’s determination or intelligence or whatever, but the guy obviously is a tremendously skilled politician.
Nothing looked good out this weekend for me. This year I have seen 15 movies so far which are:
Mirror Mirror
Wrath of the Titans: An IMAX 3D Experience
The Three Stooges
The Avengers in Disney Digital 3D
Dark Shadows: The IMAX Experience
Men in Black 3 3D
Snow White and the Huntsman
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted 3D
Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection
Ted
The Amazing Spider-Man: An IMAX 3D Experience
The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience
Ice Age: Continental Drift 3D
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
The Campaign
I haven’t seen any bad movies this year, either. The worst movie I saw this year was Mirror Mirror, which I gave 3 stars out of 5 and a B. I only want to see three more movies this year which are:
Hotel Transylvania 3D
Frankenweenie in Disney Digital 3D
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2
Your taste level is in question when you mention that Mirror, Mirror, 3 Stooges, Madea’s Witness Protection, and Dark Shadows are not bad movies.
Thank you for specifying that you saw the movie in “3D,” “Disney Digital 3D,” “IMAX 3D Experience,” or “The IMAX Experience.” I won’t be up all night now wondering which format you saw the movie in.
Will, that was clearly a list of a kid. No need to throw insults. We are all entitled to enjoy whatever movies we enjoy.
Any list should include 21 Jump Street, Intouchables, Moonrise Kingdom, Dark Knight, Ted, Safe House and Contraband. Avengers was fine – same as all the other hero movies, just more fun.
Movies I’ve seen this year in Cinemas
Contraband
21 Jump Street
Prometheus (3D)
Marvel’s The Avengers (IMAX 3D)
The Dark Knight Rises (IMAX)
The Campaign
Nothing absolutely awful though Avengers, Contraband, and The Campaign were exceedingly mediocre. Prometheus, TDKR, and 21 Jump Street were all very enjoyable.
Eagerly awaiting End Of Watch, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, and potentially reviews contingent on Flight, This is 40, The Guilt Trip, and Silver Linings Playbook
Missed a number of things I wanted to see this year (waiting for DVD), but loved pretty much everything I did see, which includes a number of things on the above list (and I haven’t been a kid for a very long time). Avengers rocked, John Carter deserved a FAR better shake than it got, MIB3 was much better than I expected, The Expendables 2 was over-the-top fun, and frankly you couldn’t pay me to see TDKR. Will get to Nemo this week, been looking forward to it since they announced it, and I’m waiting for Les Miserables, The Hobbit, Lincoln, and Rise of the Guardians. As for Last Ounce … we won’t even go there. Resident Evil I may see when it’s available on DVD — it’s a popcorn flick with neat spfx, so I’m game. People really need to stop taking most movies, and the box office, so damn seriously.
The focus should be “last courage”……the avoidance of p&a spend….the hidden fees and insider profit.
Who else is pissed that the majority choose Resident Evil over Pixar?
Why are the Resident Evil films so successful? Fans complained they have nothing to do with the originals (like myself) so why are they still turning up for this?
Saw Nemo 3d at the first matinee, theater was relatively crowded for a Sat in September should have a nice gross increase for Saturday. The conversion was good and the movie was more relatable to me since in 2003 I was not a parent and now I am.
Shockingly, the new Resident Evil is a really good bad movie if you’ve got nothing better to do this weekend. Saw it today it is the least-worst of the franchise. Each previous film in the franchise was more lame than the next, even for films not intended to be taken too seriously. This one actually managed to leave me mildly interested in seeing what happens next…
“Last Ounce of Coverage” (as it’s listed in the Top Ten) is the best and most appropriate film-title malapropism I’ve seen in a while. Hope it doesn’t get corrected.
And on the subject of that film, I wouldn’t say that an opening-weekend per-screen average of $1,500 after a big marketing push necessarily constitutes “paying off.”
Hot chick. Half naked. Bondage outfit. Kicking ass. Guns. Monsters. Special Effects. #1 movie. DUH!
When one commentator noted that Paul WS Anderson is on of the most underappreciated directors out there, I thought BS, Paul THOMAS Anderson is one of the most underappreciated directors out there.
I caught Arbitrage last night at home on VOD. I spent a mere $8 with no commercials before the movie. Strange that I can now watch 1st run movies at home for a lot less than going to the theater. You can even pause the movie for a break. I can’t imagine the local cineplex going away but they are definitely getting some new competition. Not a bad movie by the way
Agreed. I plan on renting this from Amazon Instant Video either tonight or some other night this week. I hope they do this with more movies. I also enjoy HDNET Movies sneak previews, although most of those are very average movies.
LOL at “Tower Heist” (which I actually enjoyed) trying to charge $60 or $80 or whatever it was to rent it through VOD last November. “Arbitrage” is $7 on Amazon, $8 if you want to watch it in HD. When you figure gas, ticket prices, and annoying-as-hell people in the theater…$8 to watch it on your couch (multiple people can watch for the same price…no need for extra tix) is a bargain.
The master is so painfully boring and just pointless– why this is one of the Oscar front runners is beyond me. Not even Phoenix who plays such an unlikeable character can save this. And I’m pretty sure NYC Lincoln square is lying about the 70mm. Waste of time.
