EXCLUSIVE: As a Latina standup, Cristela Alonzo is already a rarity in Hollywood. She will take that a notch further with a shot to create and star in her own comedy series. 20th Century Fox TV and Marty Adelstein and Shawn Levy‘s studio-based 21 Laps/Adelstein have signed a deal with the comedian for a multi-camera comedy inspired by her life/standup as a hard-working, truth-telling, straight-down-the-middle blue-collar Latina from south Texas who navigates the white-brown world she lives in. Based on Alonzo’s experiences growing up in Texas, the project is expected to be centered around a blue-collar Mexican-American family. Search is under way for a writer to co-write the script with Alonzo, who will co-executive produce.
Alonzo, repped by WME and managed by Andy Corren & Joe Meloche, moved to Los Angeles in 2005 and got her first break in 2006 when she was hired to write for a Comedy Central show. She was a semifinalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2010, has appeared on standup specials for Showtime and Comedy Central and has been touring college campuses. She recently made her late-night debut on Conan. Here is the clip:

Hope this funny Latina woman gets a TV show out of this. I laughed out loud a lot and there’s always room for a good comic. While I am Caucasian I can appreciate the humor from all people and all walks of life. There’s so many wonderful Latino male comics and now a very funny female Latina comedian. Really enjoyed this. Thanks.
Where’s Elia? She’s always complaining that only white men get deals. Elia are you here? Can you finally admit that women of any color will get deals if they are talented? Mindy Kaling is very talented. Shonda Rhimes is very talented. There are many other women with big TV deals. Now you have another. You’re welcome.
Wow she would be great if she were funny. Hmmm
really? i thought she was pretty good. i loved her bit about the apple picking. i’m pretty ambivalent with the affirmative action stuff in show biz — a comedian should be funny/witty no matter what race they are. i was actually pleasantly surprised by her. now, as an asian woman, i will admit ally wong is very disappointing. she is someone i strongly believe would not be getting as much attention if she were not asian.
good for her, but was conan forced to book her ? that set was barely passible for the tonight show….but what the hell do i know, im just a agent
I agree with you… it’s not all that… but what do I know… I run a studio
“im just a agent”
Really?
Hefe’s post sounds like a bad case of sour grapes. He’s just sorry that
he isn’t the agent representing the very talented Ms. Alonzo.
Sounds great. No one makes failed comedy pilots like 21 Laps.
As a long time fan of this amazing person, I am so happy about this! I wish you nothing but the best!
It’s pretty bad when I could recite the show’s pitch before reading the article. Do we REALLY need a George Lopez 2.0 here?
I nearly posted the same thing. That clip from Conan was brutal.
I`be known C. Alonzo for some time now and see all the potential in the world. Congratulations, I hope society don’t label her as a female Latin comic but as a talented comic.
Yeah!!! A star is born! Killer material and delivery. I hope she sticks to her guns and doesn’t change her style.
I don’t think the multi-camera is the right approach for her or the stories she’s likely to tell. She should probably go more the Mindy route. No one wants to see a multi-camera family show.
I didn’t know about her until I watched this. It started off a little slow, but I thought it was really, really funny… observant and specific, and I can see her being a good actress. Good luck.
Bits about reality shows on TV? How do you create a show around that? Dear comedians, showrunners/creators are looking for a POINT OF VIEW and a STORY. Jokes about Jersey Shore? Come on.
The weirdest thing is her bit about NASA and her sister. Weird how she speaks perfect English which barely an accent, but her sister, whose probably only a little older than her, has a full Spanish accent with the “chuttles” and stuff.
The other stuff is just okay.
Wish her all the best
She would be a great one
she’s not funny at all.
there are a bunch of latino females in disney, nick, mtv, etc.
I am completely supportive of this endeavor. If you need some Native Californian, born of TexMex parents, assistance, I’m yours! Sounds good to me. And, do we really have enough Mexican/Americans on TV? Not even close. Did you watch the Emmys? Long time ago, Penny Marshall said, we need the Laverne and Shirley’s sometimes to get to the good stuff. It does get better. But, for us; not so much. Demographic’s are a-changing, boys.
