If the National Hockey League and its players union fail to reach a new labor agreement and avoid a lockout, NBC could be scrambling for a replacement for one of the linchpins of NBC Sports programming. NBC signed a $2 billion, 10-year contract with the NHL last year. Any delay in the upcoming season would stall any momentum the network established with the London Olympics. Talks between the NHL and players union broke down last week over economic issues such as revenue sharing. Team owners owners have threatened to lock out players if they don’t have a deal by September 15. As of this afternoon, Reuters reported that talks between the two sides had not resumed. Comcast was counting on hockey to strengthen its NBC Sports Network. A lockout would result in major holes to fill in the fledgling network’s prime-time lineup.

Should the NHL not resolve their problems and strike…NBC can fill the games with more of The Voice.
Maybe it’s just time to remove Gary Bettman from power as commissioner of the NHL as he has hurt the league more than helping it. This guy is an idiot and how he manages to weasel his way into the good graces of ownership is beyond comprehension. Besides, NBC and NBCSN has nothing else to air that will garner a rating, so there lies their hopes in the NHL. Looking at a lockout to last by the Winter Classic.
This is like Dish dropping AMC. People screamed and squawked, but ultimately it was much ado about nothing.
For the love of God don’t lockout the players, Gary…
All 50 of us fans who are still left might just never come back.
Yet another item we can add to the list while working on NBC’s eulogy in advance:
“They paid $2 billion for hockey. That’s right. HOCKEY!!”
They also need to open up this station to all DirecTV subscribers.
Making it fringe is ridiculous. I breathe hockey and pay for the NHL Center Ice package but I won’t spend a dime more for these games.
Isn’t at least part of the intransigence of the owners because of the new found wealth they have with this NBC contract?
I would think they (NBC)must cast a large shadow over Bettman’s shoulder but the NHL owners are a dedicated bunch who have their eye on the 60 milion salary cap to replace the current 70 million cap.
Greedy bunch, who are seeing their sport grow in increments these last few years, only to throw at least part of the growth away for a few bucks today.
Despite the NBC contract, more than half of the NHL teams lost money last year – expect this to be a very long lockout.
The two sides should extend the current labor pact by one year and keep negotiating in the meantime.
Even if there is a lockout (and I think the odds are 50-50), look for a new agreement no later than mid-December, so the Winter Classic gets played on schedule January 1st in Ann Arbor.
