Are you kidding me? That looks absolutely horrible. It looks like they’re phoning in their lines, and lacks any type of spark whatsoever. I love the actresses in the film, but this is just not connecting with me at all.
Looking forward to the remake of Terms of Endearment with Louis Gossett Jr in the Jack Nicholson role and Tyler Perry in the Shirley Maclaine role!
It is like a table read.
Don’t blame the actresses. They just want to work. Blame the system. Blame Hollywood or it’s utter lack of originality. Blame the fact that this is what acclaimed actresses such as Woodard and Rashad have to do.
Woodard, Rashad and everyone involved deserves much better than this.
I hope they remake this with a white cast, and base it in the South.

Alfre Woodard is 59. Shirley MacLaine was 55 when she played Ouiser. Alfre looks amazing for her age, so is it me or does she just not seem old enough to pull off the line “I’ve just been in a very bad mood for 40 years.” MacLaine just looked so much older, so it worked better.
Wow….best observation so far: “…it’s like a table read.” But honestly, how could anyone expect to top a cast which included Shirley Maclaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton? This was a futile and unnecessary remake …much like the majority of films being revisited. If you have nothing new to bring to the table other than skin color, why bother?
What about remaking “Raisin In The Sun” with Michael Fassbender, or “In The Heat OF The Night” with Jack Huston? Maybe redo “Ray” with Dane Cook playing Ray Charles?
Jeez! Thhis new “Steel Magnolias” (and we didn’t need another version) is yet one more example of what passes for original thinking and creativity in this town. Of course, it is not that new – “The Odd Couple” has been remade many times, recasting the principal roles. And it is not the actors’ fault – it is the fact that the suits are adverse to greenlight anything that might be original, because that comes with some uncertainty and risk.
But, hey guys. Isn’t that, you know, your JOBS? To assess and manage risk and invest in something new? No? Okay then.
So we should expect endless reboots of existing films and TV shows. Recasting principal roles by switching gender or ethnicity passes for creativity? Please!
It looks terrific! A lot of women will tune in to see the clothes, have actresses and emotional display. A cut above 9/10ths of their originals. Name recognition and fodder for PR.
Can’t take the vitriol cuz blactresses get some play for a change.
Sheesh.
SM is a human story. Southern story.
The print ads for this version are simply beautify. Whoever shot the photos captured the true beauty of these black women. Hopefully the movie will be just as good. I don’t even have cable, but I’ll find a way to watch it (if it’s not online).
Meant to type, “beautiful.”
So sad we miss the the story line ..yes it is an all black cast but the story line is the heart of the movie no matter what nationality did the remake…Of course original cast top notch and remake is a top notch cast…but the depiction is of love, inspiration amongst Friends regardless of color yes the lines are still the same you can’t remake those lines it’s like trying to rewrite the 10 Commandments Charlton Heston version…just go with the story line…I love all the actresses in this movie I applaud them because it isn’t easy going behind the original…
