EXCLUSIVE: Michel Hazanavicius, who won the Oscar in February for helming The Artist, is in talks to direct the Universal Pictures/Playtone adaptation of the Erik Larson nonfiction book In The Garden Of Beasts. Tom Hanks will star in the film and produce it with partner Gary Goetzman, and I’m hearing that they are courting Natalie Portman to play his daughter in the harrowing pre-WWII tale.
Hanks will play William Dodd, a mild-mannered Chicago professor who becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany before the Nazis began to assert an iron grip across Europe. At first, his family embraces the vibrant scene in Berlin, and his young daughter Martha (the role they want Portman to play) in particular falls hard for the seduction and engages in a series of affairs with the handsome men of the Third Reich and even the first chief of the Gestapo. Soon enough, the ambassador gets reports of violence against Jews and even though his dispatches to the State Department are met with indifference, he continues to be concerned with the growing press censorship and the passage of shocking laws. It leads to the gradual realization of the horrific genocide that Hitler actually has planned for Europe and the world. Portman isn’t set yet, but I hear Hazanavicius is preparing to work on a draft with a writer that will soon be hired.
The project is a priority for Universal Pictures co-chairman Donna Langley. Hazanavicius is repped by CAA, as is Hanks. As for Hanks and Goetzman, they are up for an Emmy for the Jay Roach-directed HBO film Game Change, about the rise of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to Vice Presidential candidate on the Republican ticket.

Fantastic team being assembled. Looking forward to this.
This absolutely must happen.
yeah, because another story about the impending WW2 atrocities is REALLY necessary and creatively different…And Tom Hanks–playing a good man caught up in a very bad tidal wave–hasn’t been done before.
YAWN.
Erik Larsen is a tremendous nonfiction writer. I’d like to see more of his work translated.
Jean Dujardin as Goring!
Wow. The over/under for Oscar nominations on this has to be, what, a dozen?
This. Will. Be. Amazing.
That book is no thriller. Not to say it can’t be a fine flick but “thriller” is not how it should be categrorized.
Please, no to Natalie Portman. She can’t do accents, nor can she credibly pull-off period dramas.
fantastic news! the ambassador character in the book is a bit dull, but the daughter martha is a true original. i hope they focus the story around her.
So they’re going to make Dodd out to be a hero? This is the same man who ran over an African American child in 1938 and fled the scene. Larson’s works are nothing but fiction passing as historical fact. Just more anti-German crap. When is Hollywood going to leave these people alone.
Read this book this summer in Berlin. Couldn’t put it down. I hope the film lives up to my high expectations.
I am currently reading the book and am having a hard time putting it down. Very enlighting. History seems to always repeat itself. Of course as we read, we know what happens, but keep saying “Wake up, put aside your rose colored glasses. Looking forward to the movie.
Natalie Portman is totally wrong for the role of Martha Dodd. The ideal actress is Scarlett Johanssen.
Also, Mr. Keith Johnson commenting above is a cretin. The book is not anti-German. It actually presents German civilisation rather favorably. Remember that the first country to be occupied by the Nazis was Germany. As far as the hit-and-run that occurred after he left Europe goes, people make mistakes. The Nobel Laureate in Physics, J. Robert Schrieffer (not someone that Mr. Johnson would have ever heard of – BCS theory for superconductivity) had severe driving-related problems (although not to my knowledge involving so-called African Americans).
I haven’t read the book but I have read reviews and those who have read it claim that the book NEVER, NEVER mentions that Martha Dodd was as a soveiet spy all during WW2 and the post war era until she and her soviet russian spy husband fled to prague with the FBI right behind them. Martha spent the rest of her life in soviet countries rather than face the charges.
Martha was born in 1908. She was not an innocent ingenue when she arrived in Berlin. She was 25 and what was known at the time as a
“party girl”, sort of a 2 & 1/2 men Charlie Harper’s girlfriend for a weekend. She was 30 when she left Berlin, not some naive 18 year old just out of high school.
The thing i like best about Martha the useful idiot as Lenin called her and her ilk, is that with all her efforts, she never did anything useful for the soviets. Yes, she was a close friend of Eleanor Roosevelt (she claimed). Unfortunately, the Russian boy Friend, I think his name was Boris (how original) had recieved special training (clitoris) in pleasing women and Martha stuck to him.
Unlike the Harry Gold Rosenberg Greenglass crew, she had no access to American defense secrets. Compare her, the useful idiot party girl promiscious socialte who never did a day’s work in her life with David Greenglass a skilled machinist who was so good at his job he became the head machinist at Los Alamos a year or so after being drafted. Greenglass was a traitor, but at least he had some useful skills.
Too bad he worked for the Russians. Had he not, with his skills he could have risen to head machinist and tool and die maker in one of those huge 1950′s factories, maybe manager of all machinists at a company like John Deere, Allis Chalmers, GM, Ford.
But all Martha could do was get herself along with 200 others invited to Eleanor Roosevelt’s 4th of July party.
Martha did not manage to attract any American military, state department or technological men, only the specially trained Russian spies with whom she cavorted.
The Dodd family was not middle class. The Dodd’s were one of America’s wealthiest families. That is how William got his appointment, he was a personal friend of his fellow aristocrat Franklin Roosevelt. William and Martha were communists long before the appointment to Germany. That is why William begged Roosevelt to be appointed to Germany.
I refuse to read hagiographies of American communists like the endless “Alger Hiss was innocent” tripe. There must be 50 books claiming that. One thing I am sure Larson skips;during the Hitler Stalin pact, almost 3 years, the Dodd’s, like all good American communists who followed the party line, the Dodd’s supported the Staling Hitler pac
Portman is a good actress. She does not need any special accent to be Martha. Dark hair, fair skin, reasonably pretty, the right age, Portman will do fine. But who wants to play a soviet spy during Stalin’s and the soviets’s takeover of central and eastern Europe during and after WW2? The soviet’s killed millions of eastern and central europeans between 1939 and 1956. Supposeedly the russian occupatin of eastern Poland was worse than the German occupation of western Poland. And of course Rumania, Bulgaria, Hungary etc etc did not side with Germany during WW2 because they wanted to. It was because they knew that occupation by Russia would be a thousand times worse than occupation by Germany.
For how Jews fared under the Russian occupation of Eastern and Central Europe during WW2, look up the opinions of the Rabbis Weissmandel on the subject of Russian treatment of Jews during WW2.
I suppose we can look forward to some Alger Hiss, the Rosenbergs, Ted hall etc etc were totally innocent of spying for Russia.
