2ND UPDATE 11:40 AM: TNT went for a trio of heavy TV hitters with its pilot pickups today, greenlighting Howard Gordon‘s Legends, Jerry Bruckheimer‘s Trooper and Shane Brennan‘s King & Maxwell. All three were originally developed for broadcast networks last season and fall into the procedural category TNT had been looking to mine with its second round of pilot pickups. They join the Michael Bay-produced The Last Ship, which is now casting.
Legends, developed by Gordon, Jeffrey Nachmanoff and feature writer Mark Bomback from the novel by Robert Littell, was originally set up at NBC. It follows a deep-cover operative who has an uncanny ability to transform himself into a different person for each job. Gordon, Nachmanoff, Alex Cary and Jonathan Levin executive produce through Fox 21. It is a big day for Gordon and Cary, who also just landed a rich premium deal at NBC for legal drama Ritter.
1ST UPDATE: TNT has made the second pilot pickup, going with Trooper, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced procedural, which was set up at CBS last season where it went to pilot with Mira Sorvino as the lead. Trooper centers on a recently divorced female state trooper who is as unconventional at work as she is at home raising her three kids. Her partner on the job is a widowed father who has a much more by-the-book approach to policing. Warner Horizon will produce, with Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman serving as executive producers. Aron Eli Coleite (Heroes) is the writer/exec producer. Bruckheimer TV’s KristieAnne Reed co-executive produces. This marks Bruckheimer’s return to TNT where he produced cop drama Dark Blue.
PREVIOUS 11:15 AM: TNT is expected to make three pilot orders today. First off is King And Maxwell, a PI drama from author David Baldacci and NCIS boss Shane Brennan. The project, from CBS TV Studios, is based on Baldacci’s popular characters Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, former Secret Service agents whose unique skill set (not to mention their razor-sharp chemistry) often gives them a leg up on both suspects and conventional law enforcement. The project was originally developed for CBS last season and set up at TNT in May. Baldacci serves as a consultant, Brennan wrote and executive produces.

So, this is the procedurals pickup round. When does TNT get to an official pickup of LA Noir or did I miss that news?
Wow, more busted pilots from other nets….doesn’t say a whole lot for TNT’s own development. TNT must stand for The Network Trashcan.
Didn’t Trooper already shoot a pilot?
TNT — where you can literally dump your projects. Love it!
Legends smells of HUMAN TARGET… nice to see feature writers just out-right stealing ideas and repackaging them for the small screen.
You can’t blame the ice-cold execs for regurgitating the same material over and oven when it all writers are doing.
I have read every David Baldacci novel and was waiting for a movie or three. Having a television series based on the King and Maxwell series is fantastic. May I add that one on the Camel Club series of books would also be superb. If the series is as good as the books it will be a hit. Any info on who they are thinking about for the leads?
Always nice to see an already shot pilot get a second chance, though, the last time that happened, if I recall, was The Protector and that was a terrible series. Hope it’s not the case now. Wish TNT would’ve picked Hollywood & Vine up to pilot, that script was amazing. Out of the batch, I’m rooting for The Last Ship, since it’s the most interesting sounding of the batch.
Busted pilots from other nets are often the best thing out there. Breaking Bad. Sopranos. Just two of many examples.
The Closer… Leverage… Rizzoli… Falling Skies.. Perception… Monday Mornings… LA Noir… The Last Ship… Current ( and future) hits all internally developed. These three, developed externally. Good for TNT for having the self- confidence to not give a shit where their next hit comes from.
Shane Brennan’s script was an absolute bomb, which is why it didn’t get picked up last season. As one exec said to me recently “no one gets excited when they hear it’s a shane brennan pilot.” Luckiest guy in TV at the moment. Just look at his credits. He jumped on the coattails of another guy’s franchise.
Congrats. Congrats. Congrats to Shane, Baldacci and all that made this happen. I know you guys worked hard. It just goes to prove that great stories do find a home in this age of New Media even if Old Media CBS just don’t get it. Thanks to TNT now we, the public will also get it, of that I’m sure.
It’s gonna be a hit….
Yea TNT… whats going on?… please don’t be too stupid to not pick up LA Noir… Its something I’m actually looking forward, something with brains..!!!! Ive seen the pilot and its actually amazing!!! Can’t wait to see things get blown up by Darabont!
Legends kind of sounds like that classic show, The Pretender. I wish we’d get an update on L.A. Noir.
LA NOIR agreed!!!! I think everyone will know how stupid TNT is if they don’t pick it up! Its the only pilot I want to hear about! Come on Deadline we need the scoop! I heard they were making a decision today… hope its good news!!!
What about LA Noir??!! I will stop watching TNT if it is not picked up. I’m dying to see it!!!!!!
Glad to see I’m not the only antsy LA Noir fan-in-waiting. I’ve heard its a sure thing, but I can’t stop worrying till its official. I read this site every day and so few of the shows in development sound at all interesting or even memorable, it would truly suck if a rare great-sounding show got passed up!
I’ve seen LA noir and it is amazing. This should be a no brainer for tnt. High quality writing, directing and performances.
Yea I’ve heard the same thing about LA Noir… That its a sure thing but why haven’t we heard anything? Its the next Mad Men… Award worthy! I’m really excited for it to do great things! Nellie we need the update!
David Baldacci’s King and Maxwell??????
Goodness I LOVE that series. It’s one of the rare ones that I immediately buy the day they’re released.
TNT it’s time to start watching your shows:D
