TNT has gone 3-for-3, giving all of its freshman series a second-season pickup. The cable network has renewed The Closer spinoff series Major Crimes with a 15-episode second-season order. The series starring Mary McDonnell will end its first-season run in mid-October, with Season 2 slated to roll out next summer. Major Crimes hails from The Closer creator James Duff and Warner Horizon. “With Major Crimes, James Duff and his amazing production team have crafted an incredibly entertaining show that not only honors the spirit of The Closer, but also stands alone with its own voice and spirit,” said TNT’s head of programming Michael Wright.
Immediately following the blockbuster series finale of The Closer, the Major Crimes debut August 13 drew 9.5 million viewers, a new record as basic cable’s most-watched series launch ever. With an average audience of nearly 7 million, Major Crimes ranks as cable’s No. 1 new series year-to-date. It also is one of basic cable’s top three new dramas with key adult demos, averaging 1.6 million adults 18-49 and 2.1 million adults 25-54. Among all original series on cable, Major Crimes ranks third behind TNT’s The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles for the quarter-to-date. The renewal follows the pickups of TNT’s other 2012 freshman series, Dallas and Perception.

Leverage??? Where’s the renewal for Leverage??? I know the show comes back in November, but what about next Summer? That’s the best damn show on the entire network – it’s fun, the characters are cool, the stories are great…
Major Crimes is nice….but between Major Crimes, Rizolli and Isles, Dallas, and reruns of The Closer, Bones, Charmed, and Angel – TNT is starting to feel like Lifetime! “We Know Drama – for Women!”
And Falling Skies and Southland don’t count. TNT wants to be in business with John Wells and Spielberg – I get it. These are simply unwatchable.

I have been a fan of the Closer and was sorry to see it end. However, Major Crimes is more than equal to it. Mary McDonnell is doing a tremendous job in taking over the helm. What is nice is that she was brought it over many shows so that there was not an abrupt change, as happens in many series. Though she is the leader, her character is different than her predecesor in that her emotions show through to others. As Spock would say, “Live Long and Prosper.”
I want to say I was not for the change over but it has proven itself, especially with the change of Sharon and addition of Rusty. I don’t Rusty to go I want him to stay with Sharon. She is good in her job but misses her grown children and needs Rusty in her life to fill needed and she care very much about what happens to him. The young actor who plays Rusty is dead on that part and the guys in the department care about his well being and future also. They see how she has mellowed and grown to fit into their department. Please let Rusty stay on with Sharon and give him more of a part but as a transplanted kid. He is good at heart he has just had no one to care for him like she does and the dept guys. The show without the relationship of Rusty and everyone would be just another cop show with a woman boss. This one is very unique and special. This can be a positive way to show kids who think they can’t find someone, can find someone. Thanks.
I agree with your review. While I loved The Closer, Major Crimes has morphed the show into overdrive. The characters have exploded into their own, and everyone counts! Everyone is REAL!

I cannot believe that Major Crimes just got renewed and the fans of Leverage are still waiting. What is TNT thinking? The cast of Leverage has amazing chemistry. This show has it all. It has comedy, drama, and action. It is a show that the whole family can watch. C’mon and renew Leverage for a Season 6!!!
Where is renewal news of LEVERAGE??? THE BEST TNT has to offer and has yet to be renew.. it is THE MOST and ONLY ORIGINAL show TNT has.. and maybe ALL of tv.. and it has yet to be renewed… Major Crimes is a new version of an older show but has gotten renewed already.. and of course it numbers are good because TNT promotes the heck out of it.. I think it’s great that Major Crimes has been renewed but what about LEVERAGE. Leverage is the best show you had on TV and we haven’t heard anything about it being renewed. I’ve watched Major Crimes but since Kyra Sedgwick left, it’s just not the same. I’m waiting for November for the rest of season 5 of Leverage and the wonderful cast of characters, but why hasn’t it been renewed yet?
I would like to say that it’s less impressive to me to have a series as popular as the Closer have a few of the cast members leave and the most popular cast members and their dynamics remain. I don’t think that Major Crimes was really a stretch. It should do well. And yet, there’s Leverage, which is totally original, I even will go so far to say that When USA network was first advertising White Collar, I told my husband that it’s Leverage, but without the team dynamics. The writers have a much more difficult job writing for Leverage simply due to the fact that the team needs to be more original week after week; Major Crimes really doesn’t need anything original. I loved the Closer and have watched M.C., and find very little difference, although I do like the program. I just feel that TNT is taking Leverage for granted, and will be very sorry if they let it go. It wouldn’t be the first time a show had changed networks and done as well if not better. I’m still waiting for the Leverage renewal, as it is so much more deserving of the renewal than Major Crimes.
When are we going to hear that Leverage is going to be renewed? Fans have been campaigning for a season 6 renewal since June. It is almost October, we have done enough promotion for Leverage to deserve a 6th season of Leverage and more than 15 episodes per season…Please it has amazing, writing,directing, and the actors are SUPERB. In addition, it is the only show my family can stand to watch together without arguing. Everyone is just glued to watching the show because it is that good. So TNT, please, please, please Renew Leverage and make all the fans happy
I too think it is nice that Major Crimes has been renewed but I am finding it hard to believe that the folks of TNT can’t get their stuff together and RENEW LEVERAGE. The cast, crew, writers, producers and directors of Leverage are the best there seems to be in the network these days as there is no nudity or death shown so we as a family can watch it. The stories are original and this makes for an interesting night all round not the same can be said for shows like Major Crimes.
That is great, but what about Leverage. Leverage fans have been working diligently to encourage TNT to renew Leverage. What is taking so, long? Major Crimes is a spinoff of The Closer and Dallas is a remake; neither really original shows. Leverage is far more original than that (yes reminiscent of the A-Team, but different).

I do like the restructured Major Crimes. It could not continue as the Closer, since that character has moved on. It is nice to see some loyality on TNT’s part. I may have to stop watching any TNT show since Leverage has not been renewed. I am sick of promo’s for every other show on TNT and very, very little promotion has been given Leverage. You never see the cast on the talk show circuit yet there are fan conventions all over the US and UK! Seems like TNT is going to let the only really original series fall be the wayside so I will delete the TNT & TBS channels from my TV.
While it’s great that Major Crimes has been renewed (as it is a show I frequently watch, my question is Leverage??? TNT has moved the show around, ignored it, and still it has a rabid fan base and is managing to get more viewers. Would be wonderful to learn that Leverage was renewed…

We MC fans had to wait for renewal, and it deserves it. It is an amazing show that has distanced itself from TC in a very big way. Exciting action, human drama and intrigue!
I do understand how you all feel about Leverage, it is a very good show, and it will be renewed. And I promise I won’t make comments about another show when it’s announced.

Congratulations to “Major Crimes” for the renewal. I too feel the show is missing something since Kyra Sedgwick left but it is still enjoyable; just not the same. I can’t wait to hear about some of the other TNT shows, not just the “freshman” shows. How about showing some love to Leverage and it’s fans?? This show has the best writing, cast and crew on your network!! The chemistry between the actors shows with every word they utter. Show these bad guys they are the best good guys out here!!

TNT The fans are waiting to hear about Leverage being renewed for a 6th season. The loyal fans of this great show have done almost all of the promoting of Leverage this year. If you were trying an experiment on how social networking can affect a show. I think the loyal fans have proved that social networking does make a difference!! Please let us know about Leverage soon!
I may be the only one here who’s started watching Major Crimes BECAUSE it’s no longer The Closer. I think Major Crimes is a great show and I’m excited it’s been renewed. Mary McDonnell is a tremendous actress and I love her in this role. The Closer? I never could get past Kyra Sedgwick’s crappy accent. It was almost as bad as Nicole Kidman’s in Cold Mountain.
You’re not the only one. I couldn’t stand her accent, and didn’t really like her character either. I watched it a few times when it had a good plot, but that was it. I actually love Major Crimes, and the relationship between Rusty and Sharon. They stepped up the story lines too.
I didn’t think anything could follow our fav. The Closer. Wow, we so enjoy Major Crimes. Our old buddies are back with some new. We see Fritz come through once in while, good. It’s our favorite show. We love Capt. Rader. The young boy in her life is an added plus. THANK YOU TNT for renewing it for another season.

Major Crimes is a GOOD show but cannot begin to fill the void left by The Closer. Kyra Sedgewick cannot be replaced.
I fell in love with Major Crimes; simply cannot wait until season 2. I never watched The Closer as I simply could not get into Kyra Sedgwick – she did nothing for me. I love Sharon & Rusty’s relationship and hope that continues stronger in season 2.
