Today has been more a soap opera than a morning-news program of late, and executive producer Jim Bell today finally addressed some of the drama. The best part of his comments to the New York Times is his contention that among the many reasons for Today ending its 16-year winning streak in the ratings to rival Good Morning America is that Today is a “more serious show”. When asked if he meant that GMA is more a tabloid-style program, he said, “Yes, that’s what I’m saying”. As for the ouster of Ann Curry after only a year as co-anchor, Bell said that decision was all his — and not anchor Matt Lauer’s, as had been rumored. “Hindsight is 20/20″, Bell said. “You can sit there and think this or that, but we’re comfortable with that decision (to make her anchor) and the one we’ve made now.” Bell said there were no truth the rumors that Lauer demanded Curry’s departure before he signed a new contract. “He is the host and does not have management responsibility”, Bell told NYT. “It was not his call. That was my call.” Bell believes that as a special news correspondent, Curry is now “in the role she is naturally suited for,” and that replacing her with Savannah Guthrie was part of Today‘s the “long view” of ratings comeback.
Today’s ratings slide started in April just before Curry’s departure at the end of June. During the final week in August, GMA topped Today in total viewers and the key 25-54 demo by the widest margin in 18 years. Except for a slight bump during the London Olympics, GMA beat Today in eight of the last 10 weeks of the summer and has kept up the pace so far in the fall.

Sore loser Jim Bell.
So should his boss fire him. It was his call twice and it hasn’t worked to change the ratings. I only watch weekend today and since Janice Huff left well, that’s on its dog days too.
The man doth protest and defend, way too much. Mr. Bell…stop defending Lauer! When you say… “He is the host and does not have management responsibility”…you not only sound inept as an Executive Producer…but woefully naive! What is most vindicating to me…Ann Curry comes out saving face and a winner.
Jim Bell saying Matt Lauer had nothing to do with the decision is abosolutley the biggest crock of Sh…t.
You know what would really hep this situation.? Man Up and admit that you and the network honchos and Matt Lauer made a BIG PUBLIC mistake. The injustice of the situation, and the public “hanging” of Ann like a sacrificial lamb rang so false that anyone with a degree of senstivity could pick up the inauthenticness of this situation. YOu should admit the mistake and tell Ann you want her back and to name her own price. You really did it this time. And the show really sucks. And Matt is part of it, and is not a nice guy.
So the guy that oversees the show that didn’t cut away from their Kris Jenner boob-job interview to observe a moment of silence on 9-freaking-11 says that GMA is more tabloid-style? REALLY?!?!?!??
Yes, you’re right, Jim… a “more serious show”, as you put it, sees Kris Jenner’s breast augmentation as more relevant than showing a live feed of the President honoring the fallen at the 9/11 memorial.
Stay classy, Today!
And Today isn’t tabloid? I love GMA, but if you want serious news, its CBS This Morning.
Mistakes aside, has anyone watched GMA lately? I literally learned nothing in the half-hour that I watched this morning. There are viral videos of cats that made the hosts laugh. LMAO is NOT breaking up. (Thank GOD, am I right?) Some “expert” gave his thoughts on how Tom Cruise is adapting to being a single dad (even though, I’m quite confident he’s been a single dad before and, oh wait, nobody is concerned with Tom Cruise’s well-being.) JK Rowling was “interviewed” by a journalist, but GMA spent more time talking over B-roll of the journalist interviewing JK than they did feature JK actually speaking about her new book. And they spent the remaining time talking about how Modern Family was taking over GMA, but it never happened! Are they aware of the definition of the word “takeover”?
I hear CBS has got a good show going on over there…
Looks like you tuned in after 8AM when the show gets “Fluffier”. 7AM is when the show delivers all of the news going on.
Remember, GMA isn’t 5 hours long like Today. They have to squeeze the balance or hard news and fluff pieces in 2 hours.
Also, the best thing CBS has going is the way they sum up everything going on within the first 5 minutes of the program. I really like that part of the show. I’d rather watch CBS over NBC any day.
CBS This Morning? You heard wrong. Unless you want to see an Octogenarian and Oprah’s annoying BFF…the Early Show was the better show….this dull…unwatchable cable format of sitting around a table and talking is a snoozer. Oh wait…the EP of that show is a cable guy wasting network resources with cable ideas. That show will be canceled in another year at best.
And having the Kardashian trash on your show weekly doesn’t constitute as “tabloid?”
Honey boo hoo
Yeah, after Ann left and we got “bag o’ bones” I stopped tuning in.
Promoting Ann Curry to co-host was a mistake. Ousting her in such an embarrassing manner (leaks, the speech on the morning of her ouster) was a mistake. And the tabloid-y content is a huge mistake.
This guy is incompetent and should be fired. Instead, he’s rumored to be promoted to some higher position at NBC (a la Jeff Zucker). Ridiculous, no?
Today did the same classless thing to JANE PAULEY and put in D. Norville! What a disaster that was!
Why was promoting Ann a mistake? Because she is smart? That must be it, because her replacement has proven what a disaster she’s been. Savannah is horrible, it’s painful to watch her. She’s a horrible interviewer and doesn’t relate at all in the segments. She won’t be there long.
Natalie would do a much better job than Savannah.
I wish they’d stop blasting Ann Curry as the cause of their ratings slump. A lot of long time watchers like myself jumped ship the second CBS hired Charlie Rose.
People watch Charlie Rose to fall asleep at night…not first thing in the morning to wake up. Fox and Friends beats them in 6 of the to 20 markets….even in NY. Pathetic. They need to fire all of these “executive producers”. None of them know what they are doing.
He should just admit they treated Ann badly, own up to your mistakes and you get more respect, and maybe better ratings.
I watched the Today show for decades. Not because it was totally serious, but because I felt like I was entertained and getting some info. When Katie left I didn’t enjoy it as much and towards the end of Meredith’s run I was really becoming irritated with their coverage style during real interviews. I have always been a fan of Ann and Al, I believe they are the support that continued to make it look like a family on air, but when they ousted Ann in the way they did. They did it in a way that most of us over 40 have either experienced or fear on a daily bases- and that lost me forever. I now watch my local channel which entertains me and gives me a little info, but doesn’t prove to me that they care less about women and more about the stereotypes that they exploit.
CBS has really done a good job w Charlie rose and Norah odonnell. The Today show is a joke. Remember the guest host Sarah Palin??? You betcha.
Oh please!! Could that statement have been more any more insincere?!
“Mr Lauer is a host, not a manager…”
Give me a freaking break! As if that means a anything!!!!
I grew up watching the today show, but it’s gotten away from news and has become a non-news show. Switched to Charlie rose at CBS and it feels the way the Today show used to.
Really? You and the 5 viewers they have.
i watch 5-10 mins of today in the morning while having breakfast before dashing to work…just listening to the “lead in” narration by either lauer or savannah is so stupid…so innane…the Tv immediately goes off…& I proceed to do something far more “serious”…I wash my breakfast dishes…
Bell is a moron. While channel surfing this morning I caught three minutes of TODAY. Willie Geist in a plexiglas booth grabbing at index cards with questions from the audience like…Natalie, what’s the first thing you do in the morning? Seconds later, Natalie and Savannah were arm wrestling. These poor women. TODAY a news show? Ha! Curry of all the TODAY talent was the only one who repeatedly reported from war zones. TODAY has no news creds and should be moved over to the entertainment division.
I think that the “Today Show ” lost their ratings when they had Sarah Palin on . I know that since then I’ ve been watching GMA .
Sounds like it’s Bell who needs to be fired.
“Today” has become unwatchable, there’s nothing serious about it. It’s one idiotic segment after another, with questionable “experts” spewing a minute of “life advice” before they move on to an inspiring story about some guy who pulled a cat out of a tree or a woman who finally became pregnant after having a horrible disease. It’s predictable. It’s exhausting.
They ousted Ann Curry for Sandy from SpongeBob. What did they expect would happen?
I am a random morning show watcher, but when I did tune in, it was to Today. Ann was always one of my favorites. After she left, and in the manner it happened…I promised to never tune into TODAY again. Now I watch GMA if the tv goes on early. Period.
Interviewing a Kardashian rather than breaking for a moment of silence for 9/11 victims is Tabloid. Tabloid is doing anything to make money. Comcast wanted to promote their Kardashian show.
