Today has been more a soap opera than a morning-news program of late, and executive producer Jim Bell today finally addressed some of the drama. The best part of his comments to the New York Times is his contention that among the many reasons for Today ending its 16-year winning streak in the ratings to rival Good Morning America is that Today is a “more serious show”. When asked if he meant that GMA is more a tabloid-style program, he said, “Yes, that’s what I’m saying”. As for the ouster of Ann Curry after only a year as co-anchor, Bell said that decision was all his — and not anchor Matt Lauer’s, as had been rumored. “Hindsight is 20/20″, Bell said. “You can sit there and think this or that, but we’re comfortable with that decision (to make her anchor) and the one we’ve made now.” Bell said there were no truth the rumors that Lauer demanded Curry’s departure before he signed a new contract. “He is the host and does not have management responsibility”, Bell told NYT. “It was not his call. That was my call.” Bell believes that as a special news correspondent, Curry is now “in the role she is naturally suited for,” and that replacing her with Savannah Guthrie was part of Today‘s the “long view” of ratings comeback.
Today’s ratings slide started in April just before Curry’s departure at the end of June. During the final week in August, GMA topped Today in total viewers and the key 25-54 demo by the widest margin in 18 years. Except for a slight bump during the London Olympics, GMA beat Today in eight of the last 10 weeks of the summer and has kept up the pace so far in the fall.

Addressing this issue is so simple. Let’s sum it up in two words, Amy Robach. Whoooops! Also, The Today show lost all cred when it started doing its “victim of the day” segments. It just became unwatchable.
They should have fired Lauer! Nonsense statement that Lauer had no input into the Curry firing. He probably told them bluntly that if she was let go, he wouldn’t re-sign. You don’t need to be “management” on TV to have that kind of power. I switched to CBS and Charlie Rose because of this nonsense at NBC and the ridiculous shift to tabloid news (uggh, Lara Spencer) at ABC.
*wasn’t let go*
Leading nearly every show open for over 2 years with an update on the British Royals as one of the Top Three Stories.. Instead of things like, oh, there’s a war going on…) … spending more air time on Kardashians or Today’s Professionals instead of in depth coverage of real news coverage (where was the coverage on LIBOR?!?!?!) doesn’t make you non tabloid…
But, I’ll give Bell this. The two times we tried GMA, it looked like something off the E! network. But if you want serious in depth news coverage, sans ad nauseum pundit pontification, try the new CBS Morning Show.
Bell comes across as classless and humorless, just like the Today show.
BS! If Matt wanted Ann to stay she would still be there. This producer is just doing damage control.
I say bring in Lester Holt and Hoda Kotbe. They are both great anchors!
I’m with you 100% on this one. Problem solved!
Thank you Jim Bell for showing us how far you are willing to climb up Lauers ass. Do you really think the viewers are that simple minded to fall for all of your BS. But since you are sooooo willing to take responsibility for firing Ann I hope you will be first in line to get the axe when heads start to roll again for who is responsible for the Today Show. Hope you get the same royal treatment that you gave Ann!
What NBC Today did to Ann Curry was a debaucle! I knew Savannah would be stepping up and I would no longer watch. That’s the best revenge! I flip between GMA & CBS. Can’t stand Matt Lauer anymore. I like Al R. Remember: hat comes around goes around!!!
Bell’s record of achievement during his tenure at Today is unmatched. His success and the show’s success is directly related to his ability to innovate and make tough decisions. Today is a mix of entertainment and information. GMA is a downmarket, clown act having it’s time in the sun and will fade fast. Fact is, the unexpected occurs when you produce live TV and it is easy to point to this event or that decision from afar. Business and personnel decisions are never easy. But the show is real and relevant. Lauer is the best face-to-face interviewer in the business. Over time the rest of the team will distinguish themselves. My money is on Bell.
I think I stopped watching the Today show is when Matt Lauer was rumer to say or have something to do with Ann leaving. I though she was trying her best. Matt just like younger ladys sitting by him . Maybe he should be replace and see how he likes it.
He’s defending the move? Nice. I’m sure the captain of the titanic is defending his stewardship somewhere in the afterlife. Jim Bell made an unpopular decision, disrespected a veteran personality who it turns out viewers were incredibly fond of, lost to ABC in the ratings for the first time in X number of years (and they won’t win that back anytime soon thanks to him), then got fired… But he’s defending the decision?! Future employers beware; this guy makes really bad, dumb choices and is incapable of admitting his mistakes!!
