EXCLUSIVE: Tom Hardy is in early talks to star in Everest for Sony Pictures. He will play George Mallory, the climber who tried three times in the 1920s to become the first man to scale the world’s highest mountain. Doug Liman will direct the film after he completes All You Need Is Kill at Warner Bros with Tom Cruise. An adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s book Paths Of Glory, Everest has been adapted by Sheldon Turner (Up In The Air). Jennifer Klein is producing, and Dave Bartis, Liman’s partner at Hypnotic, will also be a producer.
Liman, the Bourne Identity and Mr. And Mrs. Smith helmer who is himself an avid climber and fan of the Mallory story, has an actor who is a strong match for the intensity that burned in Mallory to get to the top of the mountain and beat another great climber, Australian George Finch (the grandfather of actor Peter Finch). Everest has been scaled many times since, but it is still dangerous–there are plenty of bodies near the final summit of those who got close but failed–but in Mallory’s time, it was like trying to become the first man on the moon.

At the time, Great Britain had been decimated by WWI, poverty and angst was rampant and the nation craved a hero. Mallory tried hard to fill that bill, even though he was caught short in his first two attempts to summit the mountain, in 1921 and 1922. A devoted husband and father, he was torn between adventure and the simple fact his family wanted him with them. He refused to use oxygen to aid him in high altitude in thin air the first two times. On the final climb, he and climbing partner Sandy Irvine used the oxygen and were last glimpsed in 1924 as they made their final assault near the top. They disappeared into the clouds and Mallory wasn’t seen again until they were discovered by climber Conrad Anker in 1999. That the discovery in 1999 was the basis for the rather incredible Anthony Geffen-directed docu The Wildest Dream. The big question is whether Mallory died after he completed the unprecedented summit. Some feel he became the first man to climb the mountain: Mallory took with him a photo of his wife, which he had vowed to place atop Everest. It was not found in his possessions. The first successful climb in which the men returned to tell the tale didn’t come until 1953, when New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepali sherpa climber Tenzing Norgay got to the top and came back down.
Hardy takes the job after opening this year in The Dark Knight Rises and Lawless. The chameleon actor is currently playing the title character in the George Miller-directed Mad Max: Fury Road. I thought his performance in the Gavin O’Connor-directed Warrior was going to at least get him an Oscar nomination, but no go. Maybe he’ll climb over that obstacle with Everest. Hardy’s repped by CAA and United Agents.

You are so right he was awesome in Warrior.
For those who don’t yet appreciate Tom Hardy’s skill as an actor, I suggest that you watch ‘Stuart, A Life Backwards’, or ‘Bronson’, or ‘RocknRolla’, or ‘The Virgin Queen.’ He is spectacular. Even ‘The Take’ was compelling and he played a complete psychopath.
Compelling idea for a movie.
“compelling idea for a movie.” Is it really? Can’t you pretty much see the whole movie: scenes of him climbing, nearly falling, falling, huddling for warmth, nearly freezing, looking at his frostbitten hands with deep concern. There’s not a whole lot left to be shown in mountain climbing films.
Wrong. The screenplay is based on Archer’s novel. The novel covers Mallory’s life and love affair with his wife Ruth, the woman who’s photograph is central to the unsolved mystery surrounding this story – whether Mallory made it to the summit or not. Truly a fascinating tale, should make a great movie.
Been there, don’t give up your day job. You would make a lousy movie maker! Mallory’s story is quite compelling and it’s kind of surprising that Hollywood has really tackled it until now.
Great actor!
I totally agree.
Tom Hardy is arguably the best up and comer.
He is the Gary Cooper of our generation.
Just saw him in Lawless.
Great.
Best to him…
He’s like Cooper, except he has range.
Actually, “they” were not discovered by Ankner in 1999. Only Mallory’s body was found. Irvine’s body remains missing, although a Chinese climber reported to have seen an “English dead” in 1975 that resembled him. At any rate, I’m looking forward to this film. Hope they don’t screw it up with a lot of Hollywood gibberish because Mallory remains a national hero in Britain and elsewhere.
Archer’s book was only OK, but the story of Mallory and the early British Everest expeditions is endlessly fascinating.
IIRC, the 1999 expedition were actually trying to find that “English Dead” which most people believe to have been Sandy Irvine, only to be shocked when they read the “G Mallory” on the shirt label.
Good luck to the movie and I hope they get good footage of the mountain. I get so tired of seeing Lhotse or some generic mountain as a stand in.
jeffrey archer wrote a lot of first rate scott turow type airplane reading novels in the 80s and 90s. hardy is one of the best actors at the moment. but lawless was not a good choice. when one sees the word starring shia, run far and fast. there wasnt really much he could do with TDKR character.
He should of gotten an oscar for Bronson. Tom hardy is the best actor in hollywood.
He is probably the best actor I’ve seen in decades. Of course he reminds me of Brando and Newman rolled into one. I don’t know why he hasn’t been nominated for anything yet. Wake up Hollywood!!
totally agree thought i was the only one that he is brando&newman in one , he needs to be praise from Hollywood as he should.this man is brilliant in works.very emotionally …thumbs up Hardy.
Tom Hardy is the perfect choice! Best of luck with the Awards!
Excellent material, excellent actor. Very much looking forward to it.
Let’s hope no one ever makes the mistake of hiding that face behind a mask for an entire movie ever again.
This guy is a great old school actor like Burton, Richard Harris, Peter O’Toole and yet completely original and current. And can do comedy like “This Means War.” Method British. Fascinating.
tom hardy will become the biggest actor in hollywood.
that is all.
“Hardy takes the job after opening this year in The Dark Knight Rises and Lawless.”
Well, where are Bale and LaBeouf? Hardy co-star with LaBeouf in Lawless, and actually that movie’s b.o. didn’t exactly meet the expectation. As for TDKR? Hardy definitely is not the one who opened it. His PR should stop over-hyping him, he’s quickly become overrated having problems to genuinely OPEN a picture.
Sounds great. Tom Hardy is an acting genius and I will watch him in anything. It’s about time he started getting some recognition. I think an Oscar is in his foreseeable future and look forward to his upcoming work.
Does Tom sprinkle charisma dust on his breakfast cereal each morning? Talking, grunting, smiling or standing still, he is simply mesmerising. Never seen anything like it. A once-in-a-lifetime acting talent, well on his way to becoming a legend.
How many relatives and management team members does Tom Hardy have on this board. “An acting genius?!”"Mesmerizing?!”"He’ll become the biggest actor in Hollywood?!” Everybody GET A GRIP! He hasn’t proven himself deserving of any of those hyperboles. So far he’s just promising at best. Nothing special. And can’t open a movie to save his life. I’ll go see Fury Road and wish him the best.
Haha, actually, you are rather generous to Hardy. Those overwhelmingly overrated high praises have put me off about Hardy for quite a while. This Means Love was a disaster, and Hardy’s not much better than that either. Don’t know if I’ll go see Fury Road; tired of the idea of “remake” and no longer excited about Hardy and Theron, but for fangirls’ and fanboys’ sake, I wish him the best of luck.
Honestly – Have you seen Bronson? Hardy is incredible. INCREDIBLE. There are so many ‘tough guy’ ‘method actor’ pretenders in Hollywood -cough, Brad Pitt, cough – that people get excited when they see the authentic article.
He and Micheal Fassbender are the two most talented leading men working right now – like Deniro and Brando were, back in the 70′s. It’s just exciting to have a couple of real men back in movies again.
They’re the future for people who still CARE about the craft, not just PR and box office and Hollywood pretty boy posing.
I don’t give a crap if these guys sell tickets or not. I don’t. They should just keep doing what they’re doing and let the audience figure it out and come to them. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.
Couldn’t have put it better myself!! Thank you for putting it into words. He is beyond any other actor out there!
Doug Liman + Tom Hardy love it !!
Tom had a great body language in Dark Knight, gestics, really remarkable, but I was missing mimics. One can do so much whith his eyes, but he didn’t, the face was pretty dead, disappointing.
Hope his ‘chameleonic’ skills don’t reduce him to a physical, body-centric actor.
I’m interested to know who they will cast for the antagonist, Finch.
Rather Benedict Cumberbatch to be frank. Hardy isnt that versatile and cant do comedy to save his life
