DreamWorks has set soon-to-be-outgoing Fox chief Tom Rothman to become a producer on Robopocalypse, Steven Spielberg’s next film. Chris Hemsworth is starring and Anne Hathaway is Spielberg’s choice to play the female lead, though the studio was denying this when I asked last week.
Here is the official announcement about Rothman, who stepped up on this film when Spielberg needed a distributor:
Los Angeles, CA (September 24, 2012) – Tom Rothman will come on board to produce the science fiction epic, “Robopocalypse,” it was announced today by Stacey Snider, Partner and Co-Chairman of DreamWorks Studios. Steven Spielberg is set to also produce and direct the DreamWorks and Twentieth Century Fox co-production.
The film will begin principal photography in early 2013 and will be released on April 25, 2014 day and date worldwide. The Walt Disney Studio’s Touchstone Pictures will distribute the film domestically via its Touchstone Pictures with Twentieth Century Fox handling international distribution.
Exploring the fate of the human race following a robot uprising, “Robopocalypse” has been adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard, based on the novel of the same name by Daniel H. Wilson. DreamWorks acquired the rights to Wilson’s unpublished manuscript in November 2009. Published by Doubleday on June 8, 2011, the book soon appeared on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
Said Steven Spielberg, “When someone like Tom is a free agent, you snatch him up fast. He has proven himself to be a necessity of this industry. At Fox he had already been an enthusiastic partner on ‘Robopocalypse,’ and it is to our advantage that he would come produce this film with me. Tom has been a wonderful friend and colleague over the years and DreamWorks is incredibly lucky to have him on board.”
Said Tom Rothman, “If you are in politics, you dream of a call from the White House, in baseball, from the Yankees, in movies, fromSteven Spielberg. ‘Robopocalypse’ is the kind of important epic entertainment, a big movie with big ideas, that Steven does better than anyfilmmaker on earth. I am honored beyond measure that he asked for my help on it and fired up to do whatever I can for him, Stacey, the outstanding DreamWorks team, and all of my friends at Fox. I enjoyed the idea of being unemployed for a week, but this will be way more fun.”
Said Stacey Snider, “Tom was a fantastic studio chairman and his impeccable taste and passion for films will serve Steven, DreamWorks and this film well.”
Tom Rothman recently resigned after 18 years at Twentieth Century Fox, the last 12 as Chairman and CEO. His transition will take place over the remainder of the year. Fox films made during his tenure earned over $30 billion at the worldwide box office, were nominated for over 100 Academy Awards, and won three Best Picture Oscars.

Wow is he lucky. Some people get all the good luck in life.
Not Anne Hathaway. Her sour face is a little hard to take in a movie
Hathaway is a brilliant actress. One thing she can clearly do is act. she has proven time and time again that she nails roles. And I wouldn’t mind looking like her. Go AH!
You are confusing her with Kristen Stewart.
This is a massive back-scratch. At some point along the line, Tom bailed either Stacey or Steven out of a very sticky situation and this is the ‘thank you’ because there is zero reason other than a thank you for this attachment. None.
That’s about as great of a quote in a press release as I’ve ever seen. Tom is one smart and funny guy. Can he produce? No idea, but he should probably do fine. Damn funny quote.
This is simple, if Hathaway is in (I’m watching!) If she’s not, eh not interested.
I wonder if the studio will treat Rothman with the same disdain and complete lack of respect that he had for producers while at Fox.
I respectfully disagree with Mr. or Miss Amused. Anne Hathaway is one of the best actors–if not the best–of her generation. When I watch her I can see every time she gets a new thought. I can tell what she’s thinking before she ever says a word. That is the essence of superior film acting. Hers will be a rich and lengthy career.
Please, please…not Anne Hathaway. Honestly? Better choice- Saoirse Ronan!
Agreed AH is more about straight indie drama fare not action thriller games…
So it’ll be PG-13?
Right.
Like he will do ANYTHING on this movie.
Not Anne awful choice What about Gemma atherton?
Because Arterton was so riveting in …
The best shade I read so far today…
+1
Oh wait, Arterton was OK in ‘The Disappearance of Alice Creed’. That makes her an amazing thesp, right?
So it looks like robot movies are the next big thing. Spielbergs will probably be the best, though I gotta admit, Warner Bros’ “Rise” does sound kinda cool.
Nah… his track record ain’t what it used to be.
Why the continued hate for Anne Hathaway ? She received great reviews for her wonderful work in TDKR ( she did most of her fight scenes and stunt work) , and many people are predicting she will receive another Oscar nomination for Les Miserables. Hathaway is one of the few young, A-list , actresses that is truly versatile. Anne can do comedy, drama, musical, action, period piece, SNL, and Shakespeare In The Park.
I’m really curious how this movie will turn out. I read the book. The first five to six chapters were excellent… truly page-turning stuff. After that, it just started to get dull and disjointed. I read somewhere that the author got his movie deal as he was halfway through writing the book. If that is true then it shows. It’s like he lost focus… Far from great.
Tom won’t be a real producer on this he’ll be an honorary executive producer who pretends to do things so he looks busy. This is a simple favor from Steven to Tom and that’s all it is. If he wants to be a real producer then he knows how to go about doing that.
hmmm… movie is already set up, A list director attached, fully financed and cast a shoo-in. sounds like he’s got his work cut out for him on this one. what a joke.
AMEN! You can’t even tell who is a real producer any more with so many ‘gimmie’ credits. My personal favorite is Don Murphy on the Transformers. What did HE do on any of those films besides eat donuts at production meetings?
The book was okay. It felt like it aspired to be WORLD WAR Z with robots, but ultimately fell short. Hopefully the screenplay is better.
Another golden parachute for more dead weight…
Rothman gives producing a bad name.
It’s sweetheart deals like this that make movie ticket prices so much $$.
…and she going to have an Oscar come January.
Not Anne Hathaway please – why does it HAVE to be a white actress? I don’t understand.
So boring. . . . .
Back to Aterton…she is an amazing looker (what a body!)…and a damn fine actress as well (even in dreck such as BYZANTIUM)! She puts Hathaway away (pun intended!) both in front a mirror and a camera! As for Rothman, yes, it all just sounds like a “bone” thrown his way by Steven S!
I don’t doubt that Arterton is a babe, but – you know – just because she is British doesn’t mean she is the new Judi Dench. I’m not sure what’s happening in Hollywood, but everyone seems to be leaping over themselves to praise British totty … er, talent like Arterton, Alice Eve and Haley Atwell, despite the fact that none of these actresses can act. And don’t give me a “but you have to see her work in this gritty British show or film, she is really fantastic” nonsense: Arterton’s best work is in ‘Alice Creed’, and she was still upstaged by Eddie Marsan.
Based on the novel there was no strong female “lead”, it was from the perspective of different parties from around the world. What female protagonist they did have in the novel was in the form of a 10 year old girl. With that said I still do not get where a Hathaway can fit in, with respect to decent screen time. I would like to see the focus on the other characters especially Lurker and Takeo, whom both brought some depth to the novel.
