EXCLUSIVE: Taking advantage of a sliver of daylight in the Oscar season release corridor, The Weinstein Company has moved from an October 19 to a November 30 release on Killing Them Softly, the Andrew Dominik-directed crime drama that stars Brad Pitt, Scoot McNairy, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins and Ray Liotta. Pitt plays an enforcer who investigates a heist in a mob-sponsored card game. It is a smart move because the film was going against October 19 openers Paranormal Activity 4 and Alex Cross, the Rob Cohen-directed reboot of the James Patterson series that stars Tyler Perry. Right now, the film goes against the Nicolas Cage/John Cusack thriller The Frozen Ground and not much else. It also puts Pitt closer to the Oscar mix.
Harvey Weinstein confirmed the move to me. “In this industry it is a very rare event to look at a weekend where your movie could open as the only wide release picture,” he said. “November 30th will allow us to bring Killing Them Softly to a wide audience without competition. Additionally, the critical response to the movie has been very favorable especially on the amazing performances and November 30th positions us better in the Awards season calendar.”

First weekend of December is a dumping ground. Grosses are low and the movies released are typically ghastly.
THAT’S why there’s no competition.
It looks like a great movie. The new release date has me worried.
CAN NOT wait to See this movie. BRAD PITT has been passed up WAY too many times for an Oscar. come on……….giving the Oscar to Sean Penn versus Brad in Benjamin Button – stupid!! hands down Brad should have won!! Outside of acting him and his wife do wonderful things for people especially in New Orleans. Also, HOW great to mix the Tony Soprano/Johnny Sak actors in this movie along with other good actors!! I guanratee i will see this movie movre than once and rent again when it comes to DVD. this will be a FANTASTIC movie!!!!
I was looking forward to this in October. Now I have to wait.
OK fine.. this film looks very good. Adult and interesting. And I love Brad being a badass. his swagger is hot. And the cast is Super talented and the director is good too.
I look forward to this.
Movie is an incredible thrill. Audiences will dig it — directing and editorial (especially) are super tight. Can’t wait to watch this release.
Movie looks great, although the kindness Pitt’s character exhibits in the trailer creates a bit of dissonance when you consider his line of work.
Looking forward to seeing Tony Soprano and Johnny Sack back together on screen. I’ll see this whenever they choose to release it.
This is suspect because the release date is a week after Silver Lining Playbook (unless Harvey moves that release date forward or maybe toward Christmas). Also, this article doesn’t mention the fact that Killing Them Softly was to open a week after Argo and Seven Psychopaths. Those two quality movies fueled by strong word of mouth (screening at Toronto) would’ve crushed KTS. A Tyler Perry cop thriller and the 4th Paranormal Activity wouldnt have effected business for a Brad Pitt gangster film. I’m not buying it!
As an australian, I want to see this movie do well. As a fan of the very underrated “The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford” I want to see this movie succeed on all fronts. However it’s trailer makes the tone very unclear to me. Is it a comedy? A drama? A chance to see Tony Soprano again? A mix of all three? I’ll be first in line to see it but I wish the trailer was a bit stronger (when the man comes around by johnny cash needs to stop being used in film and tv for a while).
It’s a well executed modern mob drama. Some comedy moments thanks to some great characters. Overall a very cool movie – only downside is the political allegory is hammered home.
Isn’t Harvey the one who wants to convene a summit about violence in movies?
The release is after the election. A coincidink. Film is great. The politics are a sidebar and to be argued, but it’s definitely a close election. Probably smart decision.
Been waiting for this one. Brad’s the man.
