BREAKING…: A member of the crew on Disney‘s The Lone Ranger died early this morning in Los Angeles, where he was involved in setting up for an underwater scene. It’s unclear if the crew member — I’m told he was not a stuntman, and that the death did not occur during shooting — drowned or had a heart attack. Lone Ranger is being directed by Gore Verbinski and stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. Disney would not release the identity of the man, and Deadline will report more information as we confirm it. The studio released this statement:
“We regretfully confirm that a Lone Ranger crew member has passed away after being taken to a local hospital. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this time, and our full support is behind the investigation into the circumstances of this terrible event.”

How horrible! So not worth a life. Hoping the work conditions were not abominable since its Disney. Cheap…. Cheap…. Cheap….!
i hope the media brings this up during the lone ranger press junkets
Couple of things:
1. This is a $300M production. How can you call that cheap?
2. Movie sets are inherently dangerous places, and occasionally accidents happens. It’s especially sad when someone dies, but most safety precautions are taken very seriously. It’s rare on a studio movie for there to be abominable working conditions.
3. Why would the media bring this up during a junket? To make the crew member’s family feel bad? To make the actors uncomfortable? Since they are in their final weeks of filming, it’s unlikely that all the cast are on set, so they probably won’t know the details of the incident. But only an idiot would hope that this sort of blindsiding is acceptable.
Come on guys, have some respect for the family of the deceased, the cast and the crew of the film!
I agree with most of your points, except I disagree that safety precautions are taken very seriously on set. I’ve worked on set on many big studio productions as well as small independent films and safety is often thrown out the window when you’re losing daylight or trying to get one more setup before lunch. Oftentimes big studio productions seem to care less about health and safety. I’m frankly surprised this doesn’t happen more often.
–As is right there are next to health and safety stuff done on set any more –it is money money money time time time faster faster faster
with a 300 million dollar budget i would expect even more safety shortcuts that normal!!!!!!!!
and even you “js” think its a bit unsafe in your head somewhere with typing this “”but most safety precautions are taken very seriously” –most come one how about ALL!!! for one day would be nice
I do high voltage and FX –work along with other stuff and lets say this — I have come closer to death on set in 8 hr’s then when I used to live in a REAL!!bad neighborhood for 20 years
I really think they should have more safety precautions. I work on background on sets and see a lot of accidents. They need to be very careful with equipment and wires. I triped on a wire on a set. Lucy I had a hairline crack on my elbow and it healed. It is not worth a life for this make believe fantasy world. I pray for his family and know that he is now in gods hands. bg
….”setting up for an underwater scene?” In a western? So sad!
