First Lady Michelle Obama took over primetime last night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC, but a lot fewer people were watching than back in 2008. Like they had for the GOP convention last week in Tampa, ABC, NBC and CBS all broadcast an hour of the convention live, and they all had double-digit drops from the comparative night of the DNC on August 26, 2008.
With Obama’s speech the big ticket on Day 1, it was NBC that won the night as it did last week at the RNC. The network earned a 1.3/4 rating, down 24% from 2008. ABC had a 0.7/2, down 36% from four years ago. And with a 0.6/2, CBS took the biggest hit, with its coverage down 45% from the comparative night in 2008. In terms of total viewers for the hour, it was a lot like Tuesday at the RNC: NBC’s coverage last night drew 5.33 millon total viewers, CBS 3.22 million and ABC 2.59 million. Based on fast affiliates estimates not being time-zone adjusted, the numbers for the networks’ live coverage are likely to change later today.

It was actually all live on NBC on Tuesday. The network also aired a two-hour America’s Got Talent (2.3/6) second semifinal, with 12 contestants cut down to three going into the finals. Barreling toward its two-night Season 7 finale next week, Talent was down 8% from last week and tied for the series’ lowest Tuesday performance to date. On Fox, which did not air the Democrats’ convention Tuesday, it was back-to-back Gordon Ramsay with Hell’s Kitchen (2.5/8) and MasterChef (2.7/7). Both series pared down to the final two contestants as they head toward their respective September 10 finales. To that end, both were down from last week’s season highs; Kitchen dropped 14%, while MasterChef dipped 4%. Fox won the night among adults 18-49 while NBC was tops in total viewers with an audience of 7.509 million.
Besides the DNC, CBS ran repeats of NCIS (1.2/4) and NCIS: LA (1.0/3). ABC had encores of The Middle (0.9/3), Last Man Standing (0.8/2), Happy Endings (0.8/2) and Don’t Trust The B—- In Apartment 23 (0.6/2).

There were a lot of online viewers for the GOP convention, too. The 3rd night was so bad, I had to turn on the TV to watch the convention on CSPAN. Among the Big 3 and the cable news networks, the GOP had about 20 million viewers each night. I’m curious to know if the DNC convention pulled similar numbers.
If the rest of this week is more of the same as last night, I won’t turn it on.
It needs Oprah. And Gayle. And George. All finding the sister they never knew they had. Then give away a boatload of unsold GM cars.
Right on Judy.
I have my computer hooked up to the TV. With a quick flip of a remote button, I could tune tune into cable TV. The only time that happens is during football season, new Walking Dead episodes, and well, nothing else. So far, out of the two conventions, I’ve only youtubed Clint Eastwood’s speech/performance. Who wants to waste time listening to a bunch of control freaks? For me, all things of government are like my experiences with the Dept of Motor Vehicles. I don’t want to vote for any of them, I just want them to disappear from the American landscape, forever and ever.
Here’s the total numbers for Last Night
10pm hour Viewers (million)
NBC – 5.002
MSNBC – 4.107
CNN – 3.888
CBS – 3.269
ABC – 3.237
FOX NEWS – 2.398 (Dead Last)
NBC/MSNBC got over 9 Million viewers for day 1…not bad at all.
I would suggest the networks should not get so proud in their pronouncements, because quite frankly you are not our primary source for news. More young people turn to John Stewart and Stephen Colbert for ‘news’ rather than the networks these days. You should be asking yourselves why Comedy Central is a leading source for news. The networks are not bringing in the viewers, because they are not doing their job. I personally watched online. An interesting fact(but you already know this) CBS at one time had a tagline boasting the most reporters on staff than any other network, but now have the fewest. We are not turning in because you are seriously lacking in skilled reporting. You no longer ask the tough questions. You avoid upsetting the apple cart, by refusing to confront a lie when a politician diverges from fact. Then you laughingly refer us to fact check! It is my observation, that this lack of viewership is because your focus is on ‘infotainment.’ You have made yourselves irrelevant, because your credibility is at question. Step aside, because you are part of the problem and not the solution. We are much more intelligent than you give us credit. In addition, you somehow thing that FOX is setting the standard -oh please! Get back to work. Even this article has a slant. You might want to ask: How did viewership compare to the GOP convention. As I understand it -it is not what you state here, but what you are omitting. And to those that you manage to pull in, a big thank you for dumbing down America! In the end you lose too.
It was up 4 million in viewers this year. 22 in 2008 and 26 in 2012. More and more people turn to cable news networks.
Do the same thing. Watch a lot of C-SPAN during the convention so I can experience the speeches w/o the commentary. Also, flip between FNC, CNN, and MSNBC to get different perspectives. MSNBC more
likely to be dismissive and rude to the other side than FOX News.
These numbers compare 2012 to 2008. 4 Million more viewers tuned in to the networks to watch the Democratic National Convention than watched the RNC… 26.3 million as opposed to 22.4 and like Anthony has stated, social media and technology as well as cable networks, give the DNC an even bigger boost. Suck it up conservatives! When did you Republicans become such whiny little pussies?
Wonder what rstings were for the weather channel on the first night of the rnc convention? Seeing as how the folks on thr gulf coast had more immediste concerns at the time…hurricane isaac.
People fail to remember, that when Obama first took office he was working with congress, but when the GOP took control of the house, they took a NO attitude over anything Obama wanted to do. They have some blame for this weak economy as well.. They were playing with peoples lives and I don’t like it…
