President Obama accepted his party’s nomination last night and NBC returned to take the top spot in coverage of the Democratic National Convention. But then the numbers were stacked in the network’s favor: NBC, which didn’t broadcast any of Wednesday’s DNC because of its NFL season opener, doubled up on Thursday, beginning its broadcast live from Charlotte at 9 PM EDT — an hour before ABC and CBS. NBC’s coverage earned a 2.1/6 rating in fast nationals. That was up from last week’s one-hour live broadcast of the closing night of the Republican National Convention but down 5% from its 9:53-11:02 PM EDT coverage four years ago at the DNC in Denver. ABC landed a 1.0/3 rating last night, about flat with the final night of the RNC but down a steep 50% from its 10-11:07 coverage in 2008. CBS’ coverage last night received a 0.9/2, down from last week’s RNC and falling 31% from its 2008 broadcast on the comparative night. NBC drew 8.03 million viewers in the 10-11 PM ET slot compared with ABC’s 3.67 million and CBS’ 3.03 million. Coverage wasn’t time-zone adjusted and the numbers will likely change later in the day. NBC won the night among adults 18-49 and in total viewers.
The Democrats weren’t the only live action on TV last night. NBC’s America’s Got Talent (1,8.6) now has finalists as three more contestants progressed toward the big prize. However, last night’s show was down 18% from last week’s results show, marking a series low. ABC kicked off its primetime with Wipeout (1.3/4), up 18% from last week’s series low. It was followed by the season finale of Rookie Blue (1.2/3). The police drama was also up — a solid 33% from last week, which was a series low. Rookie Blue also saw a rise of 20% from last season’s finale. CBS had Big Brother (2.2/6) on before the DNC. It was up 16% from last Thursday’s show, which had been a summer low. The CW hade a new episode of The Next (0.3/1) that was flat with last week. CBS ran encores of The Big Bang Theory (2.0/7) and Two And A Half Men (1.7/5) earlier in the evening. Fox had a night of repeats with Raising Hope (0.7/3), New Girl (0.7/2) and Glee (0.6/2).

I was enjoying AGT, then it went away during the Olympics and I forgot about it and realized I didn’t care, and haven’t watched it since. They should have done a better job of dividing the try out shows with the shows in NYC, with the Olympics between those two segments of the show. The way they did it was awkward and stupid.
Not as stupid as deleting Ray Davies from the closing ceremonies, but close.
Agreed. I watched every episode of AGT, until it disappeared for a month for the Olympics. Now I haven’t bothered to restart watching it. It was a bad decision to start a competition and then kill all the built-up enthusiasm by putting them on hiatus for a month.
AGT is just flat boring from the judges to the special entertainment to the format…and, most importantly…some of the finalists. Even when you condense the results show to about five minutes by speeding through your dvr…it is still boring.
I truly wonder if the voting is fixed.
Finals do not look great in spite of the judges proclaiming how superior the talent is.
Hope the dogs* win. Then, one can say without question that AGT is ‘going to the dogs’.
*Actually, the dogs are terrific.
AGT has been the best it’s ever has been, the problem is that NBC has been twiching the nights around like crazy and you don’t know when it’s on.
I used to love AGT, but this year the talent has just been bland as all get out. Last year we had that awesome kids group that made the cast of Glee look like karaoke night at the truck stop, and the year before that we had Jackie Evancho. Who do we have this year, besides those awesome dogs? Meh.
The Olympics split didn’t do the show any favors either, as has been already pointed out.
Where is FOX? They are a big-time player and you ignore them? That is stupid. Get your head out of the sand.
The dogs are the best. Seconded by that light dance group thing who did the dragons fighting. That was kind of cool.
Overall, the show does suck. It’s so bland. The musical acts are just death. And the comedian from the tuesday show. WTF? That was just awful.
I sure did feel better after the last night of the DNC. It meant I won’t have to watch Obama much longer except on his new PBS show coming out in 2013 after he loses his White House gig.
Well, except for the fact that under Romney, PBS will cease to exist…
the ratings were significantly down from last yr, but how do the GOP numbers compare to last years?
Makes sense. NBC’s the official Communist Party TV outlet.
ABC is in the tank? Geez, I remember when Peter Jennings, (high school drop out from Canada) was doing the “Happy Chicken Dance” in the studio when he found out that Clinton was re-elected. Wonder where ABC’s political heart beats?
The America’s Got Talent show should be renamed the Howard Stern Show.
It’s still all about him. Worse than Piers Morgan. The M.C. is carrying the show. Get new judges or get a new show.
This is a preview of how many votes Obama will lose in 2012 vs 2008.
Obama’s voters were watching the MTV Video Music Awards instead.
I haven’t watched NBC/CBS/ABC for news since the 1990′s when I got fed up with their bias with all things Democratic and especially President Clinton. Over the ensuing decades they’ve only gotten worse…or that’s what I hear anyway.
Many of my friends watched on C-Span. What were their ratings for Thursday night at the convention?
I still like how the dems govern, all those in favor? Let me do that again, and again, and again, ok we’re just gonna say it passed! LMFAO!
It was a classic
isn’t that how Al Frankin got elected?
It’s always fun when the bigshots are so sure how their
deception is going to turn out they take a voice vote and truth results.
I started to watch the Democratic National Convention last night. However, I quickly got sick to my stomach and decided to watch something on Netflix.
What’s not to like about the DNC convention Maya. The angry rants? The incessant shouting about abortion rights every hour on the hour? The angry jabs towards anyone who believes in smaller government? The boos that followed when the DNC tried to jam God back into their party platform? How about the spoiled brat law student who insisted it is my obligation to pay for her birth control? I’ve watched a lot of DNC conventions, but this one was by far the most radical, unsettling and routinely vulgar convention I’ve ever watched. The only thing I got out of the DNC convention is that I am obviously not welcomed in this country any longer if I don’t start killing babies and bow to the miracles of almighty government. Can you imagine an entire convention dedicated to insisting I cannot survive without government’s help?
Good lord. Now you idiot teabaggers have gone from screaming at an imaginary Obama sitting in a chair to screaming at an imaginary convention on your TV.
Oh, and the DNC kicked the RNC’s ass. Deal with it, you teabagger losers.
Apparently communists in America prefer nbc.
Wow if CBS and ABC were that far down and even the ultra left wing zealots at NBC were down that does not bode well for this clueless administration.
I would like to see a “fair and balanced” report (sorry Fox) where the DNC, up against the NFL, is reported. I would bet that the NFL beat all network coverage combined, and probably had more viewers than the networks combined on Obama.
Another episode of Big Fat Liar…WHY would I watch that?
I would rather watch paint dry…
I am independent and very undecided. Obama’s speech fell flat for me. I want to vote for him but he didn’t make his case. On the other hand, Romney feels worse. Let’s be clear, leaders of a society reflect a society.
I don’t think our political system and society is producing Regan, Roosevelt and Eisenhower anymore.
Man oh man is my country in a hell of a mess. Washington does not have the slightest clue how to rebuild our nation. Hang on to your loved ones for this is a requim for disaster.
The drudger have invaded this site again. You can tell by the acrid smell of hate.
