Universal has hired scribe David Guggenheim to try drafting a sequel to Safe House, the hit drama that Daniel Espinosa directed with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. It’s far from a sure thing, as Washington isn’t really a sequels guy. But the film did well enough where you have to try. Guggenheim scripted the first installment. Scribe’s repped by Paradigm and Madhouse.

Either way Guggenheim will knock it out of the park guaranteed. The guy’s a pro.
SPOILER ALERT…Didn’t Washington die at the end of the first movie?
I saw the movie at the pre-screening at WB Studios in Oct 2011 and knew immediately there was going to be a sequel because the way it ended. I was chosen to stay to give my opinion of the film. More than one person besides me stated this film was similar to the “Bourne Identity” series. So, I’m not surprised by this decision.
don’t do universal it was a huge hit blockbuster that doesn’t even need a sequel. but than again Fox wanted a sequel to taken and it’s coming out in a month. so nuh said
Kolbrenner repped me. He’s a terrific manager. I took a break, a long break, but I’m coming back with a vengeance. Adam takes writers with a spark of talent and goes the distance. Just a great guy and manager.
Please. It’s a pretty well known fact that Kohlbrenner actually had almost nothing to do with Safehouse. He had repped Guggenheim for all of 36 hours when the spec sold. It’s not like he developed it. Give Guggenheim some credit here. It was all him and his talent (which was much more than just a spark).
spec farm = madhouse
Adam’s fantastic – great eye
Sounds awesome, especially if Denzell’s character didn’t actually die.
This was one of the blandest movies I’ve ever seen. Forgot about it the day after I saw it. Maybe even a few hours after I saw it. Yes, it made money but it is not a franchise. This movie was made by a committee. Probably the same number crunchers that developed ‘Battleship’. The Bourne films are a franchise because it revolves around an actual character, Jason Bourne. No one cares about Ryan Reynolds’ boring character. Or Denzel’s. They were just reacting to things for two hours. Really, Universal, a sequel? GIANT. FUCKING. MISTAKE.
You want to do a proper sequel? Surprise the planet and give us the great sequel that we never knew we wanted to that sacred cash cow of yours… JAWS.
We are doing a sequel titled Danger House it’s the most dangerous house in the world. Who will survive? Certainly not you. You and your Jaws sequel. When the time comes we will remake Jaws in 3-D with CGI sharks but we don’t dare do this while Spielberg is still around. We keep him happy by spending money to release Jaws on Blu Ray and it looks fantastic by the way better than it did in 1975. But as soon as Steven goes to that great big wonderful movie studio in the sky we will remake Jaws but not until then it would be disrespectful if we tried to remake it while Steven is still around he’d kick the crap out of us for doing something so stupid.
‘They were just reacting to things for two hours’. Interesting criticism. When will people understand that what they like is not necessarily appreciated by everyone. If you don’t like something do not go. A simple piece of advice.
“But the film did well enough where you have to try” – so I guess Inception 2 should be announced any time now, right?
You’re kidding, right? You only have to compare ‘Safe House’ to ‘Source Code’ to see how inadequate Guggenheim is: Ben Ripley writes well-developed characters that gradually reveal their inner thoughts and wants, whilst Guggenheim just establishes each character as one cliche, and then reveals that the character is actually just another cliche. The success of ‘Safe House’ is due to Daniel Espinosa’s ridiculous, but energetic direction and Washington, who – like Anthony Hopkins – delivers even on autopilot.
“Washington, who – like Anthony Hopkins – delivers even on autopilot.” Except for his final scene, of course: that is such an amazingly acted moment that he almost makes you believe that Guggenheim wrote a halfway decent characterization.
it was such an awkward movie. I’ve seen an acting giant and a complete amateur in it.
