Three days into the astronomical fall, USA Network has made the first renewal decision on its summer series, picking up additional seasons of established performers Royal Pains, White Collar and Covert Affairs. For Royal Pains, the pickup is for 26 episodes across two additional seasons, the show’s fifth and sixth. White Collar and Covert Affairs have each received a 16-episode renewal for a fifth and fourth season, respectively. “In an increasingly competitive landscape, these series got new season pickups the old-fashioned way – they earned it,” said USA co-presidents Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel. The move comes as USA wrapped a seventh consecutive summer as the No. 1 cable network across all key demos.
Following a 13-epispde freshman season, in Years 2 and 3 Royal Pains aired 16- to 18-episode seasons in two batches, one in the summer and one in the winter. Because of the show’s premise — it takes place during the summer season in the Hamptons — there are not enough warm days to film the entire longer seasons, forcing the show to film stunt episodes shot in warmer location that often feel disjointed and disrupt the flow of the medical series, like Hank and Evan’s trip to Florida or Mark’s to Cuba. This year, the series aired 14 episodes in the summer that will be followed by a two-hour holiday movie to air December 16.
Of the remaining USA series, veteran Burn Notice and Suits also are expected to get the nod for renewal, Common Law is not, while Fairly Legal and Necessary Roughness continue to be question marks as is Political Animals, which may stick to its original form as a one-time limited series. Royal Pains and Covert Affairs are from Universal Cable Prods; White Collar from Fox TV Studios. Veteran Psych is on a different schedule; it did not air in the summer and is not up for renewal yet.

What about Political Animals?
“Fairly Legal and Necessary Roughness continue to be question marks as is Political Animals, which may stick to its original form as a one-time limited series.“
They said, Political Animals is kind of on the bubble. I’d rather see it back than either Common Law or Necessary Roughness.
Did you not read the entire article or what? Check the last paragraph.
It’s canceled but they haven’t made it official yet. The cast moved on and the writers too. It’s USA’s fault why this show had soft ratings. They put it on Sundays against “Breaking Bad” and HBO’s shows without any lead-in. What did they expect? Shame because the show imo was really good.
Read the last paragraph.
Hooray! “Covert Affairs” is AWESOME.
Ugh. No it’s not. It’s a poor man’s Alias.
Suits is also a question mark. Should come back, best written show of the lot and i love White collar, but Suits is a different animal.
I’d also be very happy to see more of political animals and necessary roughness.
What question mark? Suits is the best show on the network, with Burn Notice a close second. Granted I wasn’t thrilled with the darker tone it took this season, but the ratings slip should be a good excuse to go back to season 1′s formula.
The ratings slip also had a lot to do with the Olympics.
I hope Necessary Roughness gets renewed. While not the best vehicle for Callie Thorne to showcase her talent, she does a good job and it is an enjoyable show.
I just removed Royal Pains from my DVR last night.
It has become tedious. EVERYONE they meet has a very odd, esoteric disease, but nothing of any genuine interest happens to any of the main characters.
Good for White Collar and Royal Pains. Two perfect summer shows.
USA has done a great job creating new programs.
I like all three of these, but each has worn thin this year. Credit Covert Affairs for getting back on track. Royal Pains and especially White Collar are getting to a place where watching the shows is becoming less of a commitment. Both need some juice.
PLEASE RENEW COMMON LAW!!!
No shock White Collar was renewed, question really is how long will Matt stay with his film career shooting upwards.
I think he’ll stay as long as they ask him, because he’s very loyal to cast and crew, but the producers need to not be selfish and keep him too long. They should aim to finish the show after six seasons IMO.
I am glad that all three got picked up. Royal Pains and Covert Affairs have been improving with age; the last season being the best for both of them. I am hoping that Kat Foster stays on as a regular with Royal Pains. I always enjoy White Collar as the interactions between the cast is what makes the show great. I hope that there is a change of mind with Common Law. I think that it has great potential and cast.
I am also an ardent Fan of Necessary Roughness and want to see how they maneuver Nicco’s love toward Dani. This has been evident since the first series and it makes a good story as the show goes forward. Fairly Legal has a great cast and the addition of the Aussie this season and the unfrosting of virginia Williams has brought new intererest to the show.
To sum up my feelings; USA has a great stable of shows and should not think of putting down any of them.
Yeah baby good news
Only show I give crap about is Suits White Collar and Burn notice
Nellie, Why Not Common Law? It’s a great show!!!
Pls renew SUITS, PLEEEEEEEEEZZZZZEEEEEE!
RENEW POLITICAL ANIMALS already! The show needs to be on TV, it’s absolutely fantastic and will be Awards Gold for USA…
Love love love Covert Affairs
I have no doubt Suits will be renewed, as it became the highest rated cable drama toward the end of this summer, and Burn Notice has its strongest season to date in quality. While Necessary Roughness took a huge hit in the ratings this season, I think it will be renewed, but will it get the full 16 episode order or just a summer order?
Bring back Fairly Legal!
I am soooo waiting for White Collar Season 5, Suits Season 3, and Homeland. I can’t wait for them to be shown on TV. thanks
It’s on it’s what 5th season now? I have to assume salary negotiations are what is holding renewal up. Should be cleared up soon though, as it’s a much loved series with strong ratings.
I thought last time it got renewed it was for two seasons.
No renewal for COMMON LAW? That’s three for three (series failures) for the exec who developed them at CBS Studios — and then parlayed that gig into one running the whole of NBC Television. Nice work if you can get it.
Love Necessary Roughness and Political Animals…two of the best shows. Please renew both
I am sorry you have decided to cancel Fairly Legal. I really enjoyed that program. I tried go watch Suits once when it first came on and could not because to me it was filthy and stupid. Please bring back Fairly Legal and cancel Suits. I also enjoy White Collar. Thank you. Yvonne
Love, love, love Covert Affairs. The locations, and the fact it’s watchable with your spouse or guy is great!!
