The trailer looks good. However, I think it’s strange when they use modern music in a period piece trailer. It was recently done with the “Gangster Squad” trailer as well.
I completely agree about the music. It is distracting. There is SO much good music from that era that would set the mood so much better. The music is in this trailer does not work.
And please, popups are ruining online trailers. Is it not possible to have a few minutes without them?
Love seeing Indy do something different – but what the heck is up with the hop-hop music in a period piece?
damn ! goosebump-city. loving it.
VISUALLY GREAT TRAILER. How the hell go you use a J-Z song though as the underscore? I love JZ music and this is one of the stupidest choices I could imagine….it’s DISTRACTING as hell from what is a great trailer.
I completely agree with you. Though Jay-Z is talented and “legendary” in his own right I think that using such contemporary music in the trailer for a period piece bio-pic is ridiculous. I was thrown out of the experience by it as well. What is worse is that the film is about such an iconic African American hero, and sports hero as well, yet still uses Jay-Z in the trailer score. I wonder why that choice was made. On the one hand it makes sense that such a figure as Jackie Robinson should be underscored by an iconic African American musician/artist, but on the other it makes me wonder why they chose hip hop. Why not underscore the trailer with Louie Armstrong or BB King or African American musicians of Jackie Robinson’s actual youth?
Just a thought. Overall, Jackie Robinson is in the same field as Ali — both are such global heroes that race is unobserved and acts more as a blending of cultures and fans than as a divisive entity. I am just elated that this movie has been made and I should hope that a strong P&A campaign follows it. Given who is behind it I am worry free.
Yet another trailer disguised as music video. Way to take my mind far out of the era. Shame.
That was amazing! Usually these things feel stale but that looks like it’s going to be awesome and important.
They had to ruin the trailer with A crappy jay-z rap song.
It would have been cool if they used a Willie Nelson song. . . . . . .
Why do they have to ruin it with that horrible rap music? They should use actual music from the era but no they have to try and make it hip-hop. Jackie was an American hero so was Branch Rickey. I wish Redford had been able to make this movie he was going to play Branch and direct it but for some reason his version never came together. Lose the damn music and this will be a lot classier and make it 30 seconds longer.
Maybe the music wasn’t geared towards your demographic. Ever thought about that? There are other people that this movie is trying to reach. Young people, minorities, etc. Everything isn’t geared to please you.
I loved it.
I’m a black woman and I HATE the music – it’s distracting and awful. It’s a turn off.
Please speak for yourself.
I did. You’re just too stupid to realize it.
PS: I doubt if you’re being honest re: who you are.
Besides being a major distraction on a film score/trailer level, I just find it a bothersome choice that a Jay-Z song was chosen. You see, based on everything I know of Jackie Robinson, (he’s been a hero of mine since I was in 6th grade) I think he would be at odds with what Jay-Z represents. Jackie was a man of great character and virtue who would have been disgusted by Jay-z’s lyrics and misogyny that have made him so famous. Maybe I am reading too much into this but I have been looking forward to this updated version of Jackie’s story and I hope a poor musical score choice doesn’t ruin it.
Great, just saw that Mark Isham is doing the score so the odds of a complete hip hop score are slim. Whew…
Great. Another period film about a black person with a Jay-Z soundtrack. Am I the only person who has a problem with this? I don’t recall the trailers for “Cobb” or “The Babe” having Katy Perry tunes…
I don’t recall those films being hits either. Maybe it’s time to try something new, grandpa.
THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!!!!!!
~Awesome trailer! This wasn’t on my radar at all before this but it looks fantastic, even the anachronistic music works. Looking forward to watching this now.
WE. Go. Hard.
Dang. This looks like an ABC after school special.
Great use of Hova but I feel bad for Spike Lee. Hasn’t he been trying to get a Jackie Robinson biopic off the ground for some time?
Only white men get to tell our stories. Didn’t you know that? Apparently we should be grateful there isn’t some fictional, plucky white boy in the film who miraculously saved JR’s life or stole all of those bases for him.
I know everyone is hating on the music but he’s rapping ABOUT JACKIE ROBINSON! Am I the only one that noticed?!? Seems like it fit to me. Good trailer.
don’t you get the reference? good trailer, but imbecilic use of jay-z’s track. though he mentions the Jackie Robinson, its double entendre refers to crime, which is totally not representative of the life Jackie Robinson lived or stood for..
“I Jack. I Rob. I sin.” Except When I run base (cocaine), I dodge the pen (jail).”
Stupid and inappropriate use of song for this movie.
You were not the only one who noticed. It’s a great trailer inspite of the score. And I absolutely LOVE the title.
Thank you so much. The obvious choice would be to go with some lush, heraldic period score. Problem is most recent heroic sports picture including The Fighter, Secretariat, Miracle, that try that approach didn’t open well. The song choice is actually quite perfect and not only ties the picture to a great track from a hugely popular artist, but helps position a period piece in a way that appeals to a YOUNG audience. And that’s where the money is, comin out of the gate.
everyone needs to stop hating on the music they used. Jay-Z mentions “Jackie Robinson” – keep hating, but we all know you’ll be sitting in the movie theaters come April 2013.
Second to TrailerFan.. Everyone else doesn’t have their ears open. “I Jack/ I Rob/ I sin, Ah man, I’m Jackie Robinson cept when I run base, I dodge the pen”. Along with the fact that he’s rapping about BROOKYLN and Jackie played for the BROOKYLN Dodgers.. how can you NOT put that in the trailer? Jay-Z songs (not J-Z, Pedro) are also in American Gangster and The Great Gatsby Trailers – which flow very well. This looks incredible and will definitely do amazing. Can’t wait
This is FANTASTIC
Mixing Old school with the New – it’s ON Fire
Brilliant.
if you see trailers for “Gangster Squad” “American Gangster” etc. – they all use hip hop songs and they either look amazing or have been successful movies.
The music didn’t bother me; there were a lot of good visuals and I didn’t get the usual droll biopic vibes from it, so a good one all around I think.
Always trying to shoehorn the Jay-Z rap shit into period trailers. Jay-Z’s publisher’s doing his job and making him rich, while movie fans suffer.
Exactly.
“J-Z”? Really?
Finally, a great story from Hollywood that isn’t some sorry remake or reboot.
Note to WB and Legendary: As you see from numerous other comments, loose the rap score. It actually undermines the impact of both the trailer and the film. Re-cut the trailer with better music and you’ll have a winner.
Like others who posted, it would have been better if rap music weren’t used (since it doesn’t fit the time period). But, the songs are good so I didn’t mind too much.
I think Jay-Z is one of the most over-rated guys out there and I don’t like his music. But, I thought it worked just fine here. For me, the problem with the trailer was that there weren’t any moments of emotion from the main character to engage me.
