UPDATE: Universal has just confirmed Deadline’s scoop. I am publishing the release below the original story break.
EXCLUSIVE: In a competition that was almost as heated as the subject matter, Kelly Marcel has been chosen by Universal Pictures and Focus Features to write the script for Fifty Shades Of Grey, the E.L. James publishing phenomenon that has sold 32 million books in the U.S. alone. James had a major say in determining who got to write the script, and she made the choice along with Universal co-chairman Donna Langley (who won one of the most heated book rights auctions in recent memory); the Focus Features production team; and the film’s producers, Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti.
Marcel got the job off of her script Saving Mr. Banks, the story of Walt Disney’s long courtship of author P.L. Travers’ novel Mary Poppins. That script is being turned into a big movie at Disney, with John Lee Hancock directing, Tom Hanks playing Disney and Emma Thompson playing Travers. Marcel is repped by WME and Casarotto Ramsay & Associates.

Marcel’s work showed an emotional maturity and grace that made the principals believe she was the right choice to write a script that is tricky. While there is steamy sex, and that has helped catapult the book to global phenomenon status, there is an intricate emotional dynamic to the principal characters, the business magnate Christian Grey and the recent college graduate Anastasia Steele. That dynamic is what the studio hopes will fuel at least three compelling films, as the studio also acquired the two follow-up novels Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. The deal was made back in March for over $3 million.
UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, October 8, 2012—Universal Pictures and Focus Features today announced that Kelly Marcel will write the screenplay to the highly anticipated film adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will produce the film based on E L James’ #1 bestselling book, alongside James. The announcement was made by Universal Pictures Co-Chairman, Donna Langley and Focus Features’ Chief Executive Officer, James Schamus.
Marcel wrote the 2011 Black List script, Saving Mr. Banks, the story of Walt Disney’s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to author P.L. Travers’ novel, “Mary Poppins,” and the rocky relationship that formed between the two. The film is currently in production at Walt Disney Studios starring Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell with John Lee Hancock directing. Marcel served as the co-creator and executive producer of the Amblin/FOX-TV series Terra Nova, for which she wrote the series’ pilot episode. She will also produce The Madonnas Of Echo Park for HBO.
“Kelly’s work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks,” said De Luca. “We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelly’s engagement with the characters and world E L James has created, and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family,” added Brunetti.
Universal Pictures and Focus Features acquired the rights to the three books in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy in March of this year. Focus Features will market and distribute the first film in partnership with Universal. “Fifty Shades of Grey” has become a global phenomenon and the trilogy has been translated in 45 languages worldwide since its release. In the U.S. alone, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has sold over 32 million copies in e-book and print, making it one of the fastest selling book series ever.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” (September 2011) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (January 2012) explore the couple’s deepening relationship. Marcel was represented in the deal by WME and Casarotto Ramsay & Associates Limited.

WOW! Looks like Kelly Marcel rebounded beautiful after the Terra Nova debacle which was noticably missing in her list of credits above. Congratulations on such a huge gig!
There is nothing intricate about 50 Shades of Crap. Even the BDSM is misrepresented and oversimplified. Good luck to Ms. Marcel, she’ll need it.
When writing Fifty Shades Of Grey for the movies, please do not leave out or get so far from the book that we lose the original story. I am loving forward to seeing Christian Grey and Ana in the movie.
Good for her. I’m sure there are going to be wolves out in Hollywood already preparing an autopsy but regardless of what ANYONE thinks of the artistic merit of the book, they wouldn’t turn down the job for anything.
Congratulations!
Aww it’s so romantic. Hold hands you lovebirds.
Agreed. This will be a tough adaptation given the series is such crap. Curious to see what becomes of it.
Bridges of Madison County worked better as a movie than a book, so there’s hope.
TRAVERS: Why, Mr. Disney, are those Ben-Wa Balls in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
Kelly was the best of questionable bunch, given her resume. I suspect they’ll face the same ‘challenge’ hiring a director.
can not wait for this movie i don’t give a **** what ppl say !!
The upside for the screenwriter is that whatever they come up with cannot possibly be worse than the utter bilge that is the book.
It’s a totally crappy novel, and this is from a woman who loves erotic fiction and BDSM. The novel is crap, period, because EL James can’t writer her way out of a paper bag. The Story of O it ain’t!
However, I’m very glad they chose a woman writer and I think it could be a good script with a great writer. I wish I could write it, but there is a dynamic there that can make a good story if it had been written by someone than EL James “inner goddess”…gag.
Without Twilight this book never would’ve gained popularity. EL James is lucky that S. Meyers chose not to sue.
When will the characters be announced and when will the movie be out ??
When is the Bluray out?
i think… animated. with songs. during climactic moments.
Seriously I can’t wait for this movie.
In a few years, someone will write an “adaptation” of 50 Shades in which Christian and Ana are re-imagined as a vampire and teenage girl. No one will notice, and the circle of creative life in Hollywood continues.
well the brit hired a brit like herself. Mqrcel is from London. the english are taking over hollywood.
Because british people are the first you think of when you think of sexy, hot and romantic. Maybe Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins can play the leads. She’ll show her ankles while they eat crumpets. They can write about it, but they can’t make films about it. Hopefully there are no pasty people in this film and it doesn’t rain the whole movie, as they walk down dark, dirty streets and light candles in castles and do magic and stuff. I’d like this film to be in development for 15 years until everyone forgets about these books.
That such a poorly written, poorly constructed novel is being given the fast track to the big screen is a nightmare to me, both as a writer and a submissive. This book is not only crap, it’s dangerous and packed cover to cover with misinformation and distorted, hideous representations of the BDSM lifestyle. I’ve waited all my life for BDSM to be portrayed positively in mainstream film. Looks like I’ll be waiting a little longer.
Seems like an odd choice of writer for this type of subject matter. But I guess they are going to water it down as suspected and make it into The Notebook Part 2.
She’s a terrific writer and they’re lucky to get her.
It’s not an easy story to tell because the book is a mess.
I hope she makes us all love it.
Aw c’mon, you’re just jealous because YOU didn’t write it – I’m sure Ms. James is fretting terribly about your “bilge” comment as she laughs her way to the bank…
While a lot of people only read the sex and bdsm, there’s much more to the series! Both christian and ana go through an emotional rollercoaster…. Can’t wait to see the movie!
Please use Chris Hemsworth for the role of Christian Grey
Well the book is sappy. Hope they don’t make the movie sappy as well. Much depends on who the main characters are.Lets hope they find relatively unknown actors and NOT any of the names banded about so far especially in the Christian Gray department…Robert Patterson lacks ‘iron’ they need a tougher Daniel Craig type personality just saying
From Saving Mr. Banks to Giving The Ms. Spanks. Quite the transition. Best of luck.
Awh – I was hoping Clive Barker would have been the pick for scribe. :/
