EXCLUSIVE: ABC has put in development Legacy, a drama from feature producer Debra Martin Chase, which is described as a sexy soap and a modern-day twist on the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations. Jeremy Anderson and Patrick Moss will write the script and will co-executive produce. Martin will executive produce.
This marks Martin’s first sale under the overall deal with ABC Studios she signed in August. Under the pact, she was to hire a dedicated TV executive, which she has now done, bringing in Charles Pugliese as VP at Martin Chase Prods. Previously, he was VP of Production and Development at Darren Star Prods, where he most recently co-produced the ABC/ABC Studios dramedy GCB. Prior to that, he was a producer at NYC-based Killer Films.

This is the second drama project this season that is a modern-day reimagining of Great Expectations. The other, Expectations, is set up at the CW with Reese Witherspoon executive producing. Last year, ABC and the CW both had Beauty And The Beast drama pilots. Chase is repped by CAA and attorneys Nina Shaw and Abel Lezcano. Anderson and Moss are repped by Seth Nagel at Code Entertainment and The Kaplan Stahler Agency.

Man, Charles Dickens is racking in the money this week…
Is this a joke? Seriously? Is anyone even bothering to TRY to come up with something original?
Awful awful awful.
This is quite absurd to have two identical shows in development both from the same old book but nothing surprises me nowadays.
Congrats to all involved! Jeremy and Patrick are really talented writers, and I’m rooting for the project!
Congrats indeed! And with these two excellent writers involved, the project will be plenty original. Expect it.
The exec sounds like he has more experience than the producer.
I’m not going to say this is a hack idea based on the most boring Dickens novel ever but just like that you can feel the effect of producer Gaylyn Fraiche leaving this company.
I get the Beauty and the Beast double up…but Great Expectations?! Really?! Seems out of left field and such a dated concept to boot. Reese obviously “executive producing” should trump this project from marketing standpoint — but what does CW really matter anyway?
“Reese obviously “executive producing” should trump this project from marketing standpoint?
Why is that? She couldn’t “market” her career if her life depended on it!!!
Anderson and Moss are talented writers. Congrats to them both!
Dated?? Dickens is timeless. Although it would be nice if some of these people acknowledged that he did write other books besides “Great Expectations.”
I don’t expect either of these projects to do him justice, but we shall see.
I couldn’t agree more. A brilliant novel, a part of history, better not be taken for granted by these writers/producers.
another primetime drama, ABC is calling a soap…they think if they call all their primetime drama’s soaps, we will give up on our boycott…..you can call all of them soaps all you want….we will not watch…..we will continue our boycott and only tune into GH….give it up ABC….we do not want these fake made up soaps….BRING BACK AMC AND OLTL….
Gaylyn left??! When did this happen? Anyone have the details? She’s great!
Those of you expecting a show based on a ‘boring book” are in for a treat. Anderson is one of the most talented writers out there and there’s no way he’ll pump out anything less than totally fun and full of damn-that-was-good.
Pat Moss is an amazing writer. Really excited how this turns out!
Reese should trump this from a marketing stand point? Why? Her name doesn’t carry well any longer along so how can she trump this?
Ummmm…has anyone heard of a successful break-out little ABC soap called REVENGE???? Yes, obviously no one is watching primetime soaps–it was only one of the few new dramas from last season that is still on the air. Kudos to these talented emerging writers and DMC–sounds like a terrific pairing.
ABC just = dud.
