EXCLUSIVE: Encouraging news for freshman ABC comedy The Neighbors. While ABC is yet to pull the trigger on any back orders for freshman series, the network has given a three-script order to new comedy The Neighbors. After a solid premiere behind Modern Family, The Neighbors logged a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating (Live+Same Day) last week, tied with ABC’s new drama Last Resort and above the rating for the third new ABC series that has premiered so far, drama 666 Park Ave (1.7). The Neighbors‘ retention of The Middle’s lead-in last week was 86%. Created by Disney Animation writer Dan Fogelman (Cars, Cars 2, Tangled), the alien comedy, which launched to mix reviews, stars Jami Gertz and Lenny Venito. ABC’s new fall series, soap Nashville, launches on Wednesday, followed by the Nov. 2 debut of new comedy Malibu Country.

YES! I think this is the second best new comedy this year, and certainly the most creative. People say they want more originality, yet when this (the most original show on television IMO) premieres, they complain that it’s not enough like 3rd Rock. Great show, nice to see Venito get a decent gig (not knocking Knights, just saying it wasn’t given much of a chance), and Jami Gertz is always awesome (Still Standing would have been awful had it not been for her and Mark Addy). Simon Templemann is the best part of the show, however. Who is this guy and where has he been hiding all these years? He’s hilarious!
Sure hope The Neighbors gets a fair shot. Seems like the kind of show that will grow. Many plot lines and good fun to explore.
How is this show still alive?
Because it has a fair number of viewers, that don’t include closed minded people like you.
Wow. I watched the pilot, and thought it was the single worst scripted TV show I have ever seen. Including Cop Rock and Viva Laughlin. I expected this to be cancelled after 3 episodes, tops.
You obviously missed Work It last year.
In the immortal words of Darth Vader: noooooooooooo!!!!
Kill it! Kill it with FIRE!
Great news this is a awesome show.
I hope ABC sticks a post it on the script order that says “now, this time, be funny.”
Wait– this show was jaw-droppingly bad. Commenters saying positive things: please admit you are in some way associated? Sometimes I feel like I’m going crazy…
I am not associated with this show in any way. I am not an actor. I am not an agent. I am not part of any studio or network.
I am just a person; a viewer. I thought this show was a pretty good comedy. A welcome departure from the usual Network sitcoms. I say give it a chance. I think it could grow into a good half hour comedy.
So to “oh come on” above – while you have your opinion and I respsect it — I hope my answer suits you.
After watching the pilot, it took me an hour to get out of the facepalm… But having seen episode 1 I must say, they worked hard on this show and I am eager to see how they will push it further to the better in the next episodes.
Really? It’s so… dated.
3rd Rock From The Sun called, it wants “The Neighbors” to stop trying to be as funny.
I think ABC wants to try to ensure they have enough Neighbors episodes ‘in the can’ to get them into early next year. Hence the order for more scripts. At that point [winter 2013], DWTS will be on winter hiatus, and ABC’s other two new comedies – “Live with Parents” and “Family Tools” will get their premieres. How well they do at that time (January ’13) may well determine if Neighbors gets a ‘back-nine’ order.
I’m not so sure about Family Tools, but I think Sarah Chalke’s ‘Live With Parents’ has some potential to do well. If so, it may well end up on Wednesday nights at 8:30 once DWTS returns to Tuesdays in March. If the show does poorly (and Family Tools does poorly), then Neighbors could well get a full season order to take it into May 2013.
That’s really Neighbors competition at this point – not so much the other networks’ competition on Wednesday nights at 8:30, but the Sarah Chalke comedy and Family Tools. ABC needs one of these three to try to get to May 2013 – the best of the three will make it to May. Keep an eye on the demo rating [18-49] on Neighbors. That’s the number the Chalke comedy and Family Tools will need to beat. Highest demo rating of the three will get the back-9 order to reach May 2013.
I watched the premier expecting something horrid and was pleasantly surprised. It’s quirky and rough around the edges with some odd pacing that I couldn’t tell if it was on purpose or by accident, but overall it was something different. I’ll give it another chance and see where it goes.
If it really was as bad as you think, why are the rating doing so well on it, and why has abc ordered more new scripts before they ordered more from any other new show? its a unique fun show.
*cough* Real TV *Cough*
e — You’ll be getting your call from 3rd Rock From The Sun any minute now.
Not a great show, but a fun show nonetheless, especially the double fish out of water premise of the aliens being out of their comfort zone when the humans move in to the all alien gated community and the humans being out of their comfort zone by living next to aliens. And I adore the aliens calling their children “loin fruit.”
just saw the show for the first time and immediately wanted to comment! totally new and very funny with tons of room for wild strangeness. fantastic.
I am hooked on this show. I think it is one of the funniest shows on TV. So different and FUNNY. When they all got in the SUV to go to the mall and starting screaming I was rolling on the floor. Please give it a chance
Do you people not understand the concept of a comedy? This series is original, thoughtful and very funny. If you don’t like it . . . you just don’t get it. That would be your problem.
I just got around to watching The Neighbors on demand and I think it’s one of the best new shows this season. ABC would be crazy to not give it a full season order…
What a great comedy block The Middle, The Neighbors, Modern Family & Suburgatory would make.
I, too, am hooked on “The Neighbors”. It is hysterical. It’s lead-in “The Middle” is funny, too. I hope both shows hang around for a long, long time!
