It’s not just the movie studios who seemingly don’t care about stars anymore. Now it’s some Hollywood agencies, too. It used to be that every tenpercentery would make a big deal about signing well-known talent by trumpeting the news. But in recent days UTA didn’t bother to announce Ed Burns. And CAA didn’t bother to announce Chris Pine. Not exactly star treatment, is it?
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

When exactly did Ed Burns become a ‘star’? Did I miss something?
But bro, he was so cool in Entourage!
10 minutes later… we get the announcement.
one of Kevin Huvane’s assts must be tasked with reading Deadline.
WME didn’t announce that they just signed Matt Lauria an actor from Friday Night Lights who is now recurring on Parenthood.
Ed who?
if eddie would take a tv pilot– or even develop one– he may again be relevant one day. These micro budget indies are crap.
UTA also signed Jenna Dewan-Tatum away from ICM a few weeks ago and they didn’t announce that either.
She’s not at the same level.
Let’s see what happens when Philip Seymour Hoffman signs with an agency soon…
Doesn’t ‘star’ mean that you are automatically recocnizable, open movies big on a regular basis, and you are the reason people go to a film or watch a TV show? Ed Burns and Chris Pine are not star… in 2012 America, Honey Boo Boo and Kim Kardshian are stars Then he wept.
CAA caught flack so to speak about name dropping with Hemsworth. Can’t speak for the others.
Maybe they are finally realizing that stars don’t work any harder than anyone else in this business. They’re just paid more but work less
Okay—you, are OBVIOUSLY NOT an actor. You have NO idea what you are talking about. GO ATTEMPT to become a “NAME” talent and then you can talk to me about that and spur off at the mouth like that. I used to think as you do—trust me. The work they do is DIFFERENT, you have to have the RIGHT personality type for it. You have to be VERY, VERY, VERY DRIVEN and stay motivated. Don’t believe the pretty photos that are posted. That’s just the sales pitch.
Take ONE acting class—just ONE!!! OHHH?!?! What’s that? It costs money?!??! to take an acting class? I have to invest in my career?!?! OHHH NOOO!!!! Yeah. Actor’s are in business to make money. The smart ones will become the movie stars you see making the big bucks. Knowledge. Wisdom. Savvy at business. They call it movie magic for a reason. You bought into the idea they just do nothing for a living. Sorry to burst your bubble. Nothing in life is free—even the actors work. The smart ones know that. Try driving to those auditions, try getting rejected, try making a fool of yourself, try telling your family you want to be an actor, try telling people on the street you want to be an actor, try ACTING, try getting feedback for it, try memorizing lines, try that you have to do certain things to maintain your image and to market that image, try getting an agent, try being self motivated, and that’s not even the tip of the iceberg. Try working with people who are different than you, try not getting caught up in politics involved in the business.. try knowing your worth, how much you should get paid and knowing how to get paid, try getting someone to pay you for what you do—-those actors who “made it” knew something I’m trying to learn. Trying to master. Watch your mouth.
And yes. Some people get lucky. All the actors at some point NEED that “break.” to be cut some “slack”.. so that we know we’re not doing this for nothing. You suffer more rejection in this business even if you are successful—not everyone loves you, not everyone loves that movie you were in that you always dreamed of being in, not everyone thinks you’re so great, not every casting director wants to hire you. NOT everyone wants to work with Leonardo DiCaprio—and he is the “KING of the world.” It’s not always easy, no matter who you are. And yes, they worked to get there. Leo had to be smart wit his choice of films he made–he couldn’t just go do whatever he wanted. He had to keep the audience in mind, and trust me–that’s not easy. There’s too many opinions out there to make everyone 100% happy. But you still have to turn a profit, or else what’s the point of being in business?!?!?
Yes, people like Paris Hilton exist–who will never have to work a day in their life. But she’s not respected the way some people are. And even Spielberg is wise enough to know which actors work hard and which don’t—which type of actor do you think the “great” directors want to work with??? The ONES WHO WORK HARD.. not the lazy bum actors. Good directors like Peter Jackson and all the rest want the hard working actors—you obviously have never ever tried to be an actor.
In my experience Ed Burns is a good guy (can’t explain the U.T.A. omission.) The Chris Pine thing (an announcement) may have added fuel to the fire regarding the previous agency commissions thing so it’s possible that C.A.A. acted appropriately on behalf/on advisement of their new client. As you get older – and all agents know this but some won’t admit it; some stars the same thing – often these moves are about the monthly nut, the dependents, the mortgage, the will – in addition to just perception. Stars have the same worries and concerns as anybody else…including agents and managers.
I’m going to have to side with those questioning calling Ed Burns and Chris Pine stars. If this were Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Mark Wahlberg or Julia Roberts l bet there would have been an announcement. This isn’t a comment on any of these actors’ talent, but l don’t think I’m going out on a limb saying that Burns and Pine are not in that league.
What’s the big deal?
Because it’s jenna dewan tatum? thats why they didnt announce it.
I’m sure WME has missed a star announcement recently, right?
Did it ever occur to you that people like Chris Pine would ask their new agency to not publicize such a move so as not to hurt their old representation/minimize the chance of pissing off their old representation?
Really, people? Ed who? Come on. Ridiculous.
It’s the story, not the star, that sells a movie.
Who cares!? In this day, do we still need to treat actors like spoiled children? I think a lot of them have grown up and become quite entrepreneurial. This old school idea of treating them like little princes and princesses is a throw back to the contract days. Let’s evolve, shall we?
Why would they announce Jenna Dewan-Tatum? She went to Channing’s agency-big whoop-no loyalty. ICM did more for her then UTA will be able to unless she just keeps being put in her husband’s projects…
Why announce things like that today, in this day and age, when trollers will just leave negative remarks and those who support the signings will be called “Plants” on boards like this?
If you’re an actor with a name, no one cares who you’re with. They’ll find you one way or another.
