UPDATED: I’ve learned that AMC has given a 10-episode third season renewal to Hell On Wheels. However, the Western drama’s creators Joe and Tony Gayton are stepping down as executive producers and will no longer be involved day-to-day on the show. They may consult. John Shiban continues as showrunner. The Gaytons had a two-year contract for Hell On Wheels, which is up. The two were very involved in the show early on, gradually focusing their attention on new projects — they recently sold a drama project to NBC.
The renewal comes on the heels of the Western drama wrapping its second season earlier this month with a solid average of 2.4 million viewers. That was down from the average of 3 million viewers for the show’s freshman season — but this time around, Hell On Wheels did not have blockbuster The Walking Dead as a lead-in and was impacted by the lack of AMC carriage on Dish Network.
Hell On Wheels, from Entertainment One and Endemol USA, is exec produced by Shiban, Jeremy Gold and David Von Ancken exec produce. eOne’s John Morayniss and Michael Rosenberg oversee production with Mike Frislev and Chad Oakes of Nomadic Pictures.

So delighted – last season was superb and Anson Mount is a great lead.
Thank God! That keeps that night free for other programming until AMC gets their game back.
I really liked the first season but the second season just felt too unfocused. And while I liked that they cleaned up a lot of casting at the end of it, the season as a whole just left me a lot less interested. Enough so that I knew if it was going to get renewed for a third, I’d watch it out of momentum. which is why I canceled the season pass on the DVR.
Good show, but I got the feeling that just didn’t plot out a second season when doing the first and got lost along the way.
Now they wish they hadn’t killed off Lily.

Well ya gotta expect spoilers when you peek into a thread on a show. I didn’t like Lily, I thought she was a jarringly modern imposition onto this show which already has a sketchy sense of history as it is, so hearing she’s dead makes me a bit more likely to bother to watch S2. i’ve been on the fence about it.

Great show! But they killed off several characters and burned down most of the sets in the finale. It’ll be interesting to see what emerges next year.

I was hoping for a renewal. It will be interesting to see what direction the show takes after the loss of Lily Belle, and the Swede, and (possibly) the Durants, but I expect Cullen Bohannon will take up the slack and meet refreshing new loves and villains.
The thing is, the Swede is still not confirmed dead….we saw him jump into the river, and his body float away….but he still MAY be alive….I have high hopes.
The Swede is one of the best villains ever written. You want him dead, but at the same time you want him alive again so you can keep wishing him dead. Now THAT’S a well written bad guy!

Glad for the (remaining) cast and crew; hope the show will gain new momentum in S3, ala Walking Dead after the loss of Darabont. Shiban is a strong SR and writer, which bodes well. Good luck and we’ll be watching!

Glad to see someone is thinking. This is a great show, the second season surpassed the first by far. Can’t wait to see what they do with the third. It keeps you guessing, for sure. Great characters, although some are gone now, though we still have the incomparable Mr. Bohannan to keep us entertained. Mr. Mount is a fantastic actor, as is Common. Will enjoy seeing their relationship develop over the next season.
Loved the first 2 seasons and still hoping Cullen told them what he wanted them to hear. May not have been what really happened. (Okay, so I wan’t Lilly to be alive) Excited
I was one of fans upset that they killed Lilly. Now that I see writers ended their 2 yr contract, it at least makes some sense. They killed their storyline!! Lets see if new writers can revive her somehow ….
