UPDATE 10 AM: American Idol auditions got underway with all four judges present, including feuding Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.
PREVIOUS: The ink on Nicki Minaj’s American Idol contract is not even dry yet, and she already is at the center of a controversy that disrupted filming on the Fox reality show yesterday. In a video posted by TMZ last night, Minaj and fellow Idol judge Mariah Carey are seen going at each other, with Minaj instigating the fight by launching a barrage of expletives, including shouting “I told them I’m not f**kin’ putting up with her f**kin’ highness over there,” about Carey.
The heated exchange led to an early wrap of filming in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It did go too far, to the point where the producers said ‘let’s call it a day,’” Idol host Ryan Seacrest said of the altercation on his radio show this morning. “Those few contestants who didn’t get to see the judges, they’ll bring them back today.” Auditions are scheduled to continue as planned in Charlotte today. It remains to be seen if all four judges will show up.

This auto-tuned costumed Chipmunk is surely intimidated by the vocal talent in Mariah. Carey has earned the Diva label. A real showbiz pro would never unload a tirade like this in public ( ok christian bale did) but you know what i mean. I just am amazed at what is labeled a “STAR” in this business anymore. Bottom line: FOX know people will tune in and it might be a ratings GOLDMINE ( for a few episodes)
This is what you get when you put one talentless diva next to another.
Props to whoever’s heading publicity this season.
Total genius publicity stunt. “AI” has been sinking, this should put a few more eyeballs on the show. Whoever concocted this crap should work for one of the candidates – their own evil propaganda machines could use the help.
Agreed. This is all staged down to the last acrylic nail pointing in someone’s eye. All for ratings and PR, folks.
Agree…it is pure publicity to draw interest. This has been the pattern for most of these reality talent shows for a few years. Put the focus on the judges, and put them in a soap opera context.
Boring…
This show is supposed to be about NEW talent – not angry old (oldish) talent who feels they never got the love/respect/$/fame/worship that they deserve.
Check your facts mirah has acted a fool on camera , there’s videos on line where she told off a reporter and she dint even make since she acted as she was on something .
Well put.
I see one season for both of these women.
Mariah Carey doesn’t need to be there, to be mistreated by a woman with a fraction of her talent or career.
Minaj is a gimmick performer who can go right back to shilling for multiple vendors while engaging in duets with more-talented rap stars and their versatile producers.
Beautiful. Keep it coming, every year there are fewer and fewer reasons to watch Idol. Sorry to say, but this is great.
NO??? Headline grabbing backstage drama??? Wow, who would’a guessed it… I see a Cage Match in their future. Hope that judges’ table is notched to collapse whenever someone gets thrown off the top of the cage.
This is exactly what Fox was wishing for especially during the live shows to keep the ratings rising as people just love watching train-wrecks!
well, it looks the FOX is getting exactly what they wanted out of this: drama for the ratings. Kudos to the FOX PR Machine….
These pathetic karaoke shows have completely lost their mojo, so all they have left are these desperate attempts to lure eyeballs with these embarrassingly transparent PR stunts with the judges.
Broadcast television has officially completed it’s transformation into a trailerpark carnival of geeks, mutants and n’er-do-wells. The dumbing-down of America continues, right on schedule.
Christian Bale wasn’t in public. He was on a closed set.
AI is just another reality show. Isn’t this on par for reality shows?
What Minaj says is very telling: “I told them…”
She is basically showing how she went on the show with a chip on her shoulder. What I don’t understand is that they have collaborated on a song before, so I don’t see why there’s bad blood.
Minaj is unprofessional and has an ego that has gone unchecked. Her fans on Twitter were cheering her on when they should have been ashamed. Bringing race into the equation, as a woman of color, who is relatively new on the Billboard scene, she should be GRATEFUL she was given a viable platform for exposure to audiences she probably has not reached yet. Not be disrespectful to a person who has 18 number 1 singles and has sold over 100 million albums. Why does she need to reinforce negative “Angry Black Woman” stereotypes?
AI may have faltered ratings-wise in recent years, but it still gets 20 million viewers a week when most shows win Emmy’s and have sad ratings. She should be happy she is there since she isn’t even a singer, and when she “Sings” she uses auto tune to the max. Be humble. Be grateful. Go to work. Collect your check. And get seen by people who never heard your “music” before.
Is that too much to ask?
These manufactured Idol/Factor publicity stunts are as tired as the shows themselves.
Put em’ on Cinemax and I’m there. Late night.
