EXCLUSIVE: In a big early casting coup this broadcast development season, Saturday Night Live star Andy Samberg is set as the lead of Fox‘s untitled Mike Schur/Dan Goor comedy pilot. The single-camera comedy, written by the Parks And Recreation duo of co-creator/exec producer/showrunner Schur and executive producer Goor, is about a diverse group of detectives in a precinct at the very edge of New York City. Emmy winner Samberg will play the lead detective. He will also serve as a producer of the comedy, from Universal TV, which is executive produced by Schur, Goor and 3 Arts’ David Miner. “Andy’s hilarious, and he was the first guy we thought of when we designed the part,” Schur and Goor said. “From the moment we mentioned his name, everyone at Universal Television and Fox was 100% on-board. Andy loved the pitch, and it all came together really quickly. We couldn’t be happier.” Schur and Goor have worked with Samberg before — he guest starred in a 2010 episode of Parks & Rec.
In a fierce biggest bidding war, Schur and Goor’s pitch landed at Fox in August with a rich pilot production commitment. The casting of Samberg will no doubt turn that into a pilot order once the script is completed.
During his seven-year stint on Saturday Night Live, which he left this summer, Samberg, along with his Lonely Island cohorts Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, helped usher the venerable sketch comedy show into the digital age with their viral digital shorts, including megahit “D*** In A Box” featuring Timberlake, which won them an Emmy.
Samberg is currently starring on the hit BBC Three sitcom Cuckoo, where he plays an idle young American who marries a British girl and comes into conflict with his wife’s overprotective father (Greg Davies). He can also be seen in the features Celeste & Jesse Forever and is heard opposite Adam Sandler in the animated box office hit Hotel Transylvania after recently starring opposite Sandler in That’s My Boy. Samberg, Schur and Goor are repped by UTA. Samberg is managed by Mosaic, Schur by 3 Arts.

So happy for Mike!
Thanks Harris!
Not nearly enough humblebragging happening here. “I can’t believe a talented actor like Andy Samberg” would want to be in our nothing show. So weird. #blessed”
Ian – LOL!
Andy Samberg is neither appealing or funny. Sorry
I’m sure you are!
Samberg’s a 1/2 trick pony.
Not to be snarky, but really… is getting Adam Samberg a “casting coup”?
To be snarky, in what way did you not intend to be snarky?
As in, I’m not trying to be malicious. I am, however, trying to point out that this is hardly a big catch. Seriously… how many people were chasing this guy?
It would have been if they had gotten Adam Samberg.
Yes, my entire post is invalid because I hit the wrong key.
Unfortunately, that’s how the internet works.
Samberg was TERRIBLE when he guested on Parks & Rec. Hope he’s been getting some acting lessons.
Agreed, This guy’s strong suit is writing and producing music videos. As an actor, he is a sketch performer at best. I sense that he’s a lot of fun to be around, though. So, his talented SNL friends will keep him employed.
Why is his feature agent making scale TV deals?
I’m sure after the That’s My Boy disaster panic button started. No studio would go near this guy again. Soooo…can on the only department that makes money TV. Keeping this client happy.
Um. Not happy for Dan? Weird.
To cast Samberg, I’m assuming Andy Dick, Pauly Shore and Corbin Bernsen turned ‘em down?
I like Andy Samberg because he never tried to do too much, or go past his strengths on snl. I just don’t know if he’s a tv or film guy. I don’t mean this negatively because the majority of content is online, but I feel like that may be where he’s best suited?
I like Andy Samberg as well, and see where you’re coming from here…but I think if the tone of this show ventures into ‘Hot Rod’ style territory, then I think Samberg can potentially flourish on a network like FOX. I think this guy has an incredible comedy mind, but hasn’t really been able to transfer that outside of his ‘do-it-yourself’ digital shorts on SNL and the aforementioned Hot Rod (there’s just something about that movie…)
Reno 911! meets Hill Street Blues meets Parks and Rec is what I think we’re going to get here…and I think Andy can work in that space.
Awesome I love Paul Rudd!
Samberg is great.
He and Wiig basically carried SNL for the last four seasons….
FOX: stealing NBC’s thunder for the past few years!
Imagine if KReilly was still at the Rock… That would be awesome!
I read the pilot. It was awful – unoriginal jokes, silly characters. I can’t believe it’s getting made.
It hasn’t been written yet, ding dong.
Where did you get your time travel machine from?
He’s a Looper.
Samberg was hilarious on Parks and Rec. I’m surprised, but definitely happy, that he is staying on television. I’m really excited about this. Good luck to all involved.
I loved Adam in SNL, but that’s about it. I hated him in pretty much everything else he’s been in (tv/film-wise). I’m sorry but he holds no stage presence, I don’t know if it’s ’cause he can’t act or if it’s because the way he looks. He’s a sketch comedian kind of guy, not a film/tv actor.
He’s just a younger, less funny copy of Adam Sandler from what I’ve seen on SNL. He’s way over-rated – especially by himself. And so far, none of the movies that he has starred in has done any decent numbers. Do we really need another Adam Sandler? One is quite enough. Thanks, but no thanks.
So happy for Goor! And Samb-ler was very good in Celeste and Jesse…,
I’m happy for Harris.
He’s the poster boy for unjustified self-esteem. Give a real comedic talent a chance.
The smartest thing Andy could ever do is break away from his two Lonely Island pals Jorma and Akiva. He will do much better on his own. I hope this show is a hit for him it’s hard to leave SNL and every cast member who does leave has to sink or swim on their own. Most don’t succeed and they fade into obscurity.
I don’t know about that. Seems to me that all his ‘mainstream’ stuff is what’s getting him in trouble. I’m not a big fan of ‘absurdest’ style comedy, but those guys have their finger on a certain pulse that, I feel, is an untapped well of comedy.
I don’t know if this show works on CBS or NBC…but on FOX…
This is the most ill-informed and oddly biased comment chain. Andy has shown that he has acting chops and most recently was sweet and funny and also heartbreaking in Celeste and Jesse.. Yes I am talking about ANDY not ADAM. On top of that, he is a wildly talented comedian, writer, and performer. To “Anonymous” who suggested that he should break away from Jorm and Kiv, you are out of the loop. One of the best things about the Lonely Island is how they work together to push each other to be greater, more original, funnier, odder … And their independent projects have to date only strengthened that. This is such a get for network television. And in a time when Fox needs to strengthen it’s male skewing comedic programming, Samberg brings exactly the right demo appeal. Awesometown lives.
“Jorm” and “Kiv” VAL YOU’RE SO AWESOMETOWN
