EXCLUSIVE: Ben Stiller is teaming with another comedy multihyphenate, Bonnie Hunt, for a comedy project at ABC that will star the comedienne. Hunt will write the half-hour, titled compliKATEd, with her writing partner and frequent collaborator Don Lake. The ensemble comedy centers on Kate (Hunt), a confidently insecure woman with a complicated life. It is produced by Stiller’s Red Hour Television, Hunt’s Bob & Alice Prods and ABC Studios, where Red Hour TV is under an overall deal. Hunt and Lake will executive produce with Red Hour TV’s Stiller, Debbie Liebling and Stuart Cornfeld.
This marks Hunt’s return to ABC and ABC Studios, where she toplined the 2002 comedy series Life With Bonnie, also co-created/executive produced with Lake. The two also co-wrote together the 2006 ABC/ABC Studios comedy pilot Let Go, directed by and starring Hunt.
This is the third ABC sale for Red Hour TV in its maiden development season, along with single-camera comedies Please Knock, written by Kevin Napier and loosely based on Stiller’s life, and The Notorious Mollie Flowers, written by Adam Resnick. Red Hour TV was launched at the end of last year when Stiller and Cornfeld’s Red Hour Films signed an overall deal with ABC Studios and brought in Liebling to run the new TV division. compliKATEd, which has received a script commitment, was packaged by WME.
ABC has several comedy projects with female stars in the works for next season, including half-hours toplined by Jane Fonda and Mandy Moore.

Oh my god. That name has GOT to go.
I concur.
When will it air ?
Guess Red Hour learned its lesson after trying some more adventurous pilots at Fox. Both Heat Vision & Jack and The Bureau were great.
Cuz Bonnie Hunt’s track record at writing and/or starring in sitcoms is so stellar.
Is this a re-working of LET IT GO? Hunt’s character in that pilot was also a woman named Kate with a “messy life.”
From the description at the time: “Recently divorced Pasadena Police Detective Kate Holloway’s life is like her desk; it looks messy but she knows where everything is. Thank goodness she has her friendship with her longtime partner, Nick. Despite his difficulty in sustaining a relationship, Bonnie is the one woman he is always there for. Together with a wacky cast of characters at the precinct, Bonnie and Nick make solving crimes, while dissecting each other’s personal lives, all part of a day’s work.”
Bonnie Hunt? I’m there!
It may not be worth anything but ABC at least is getting something interesting sounding shows this fall. In the last 2 weeks, they’ve gotten Compli-Kated and Jane Fonda’s neatly titled show to add to the Shonda Rhimes sitcom which goes along with several really solid/strong sounding dramas, as far as concepts go. Could a turnaround happen next fall? Who Knows? They still got a lot of cringe worthy crap that just sounds like failure-on-a-stick and most of them are sitcoms/comedies.
NEWS FROM THE FUTURE: Amid poor critical reception and even worse ratings, Bonnie Hunt fired her entire writing staff today, will write all of the scripts herself.
Actually, that’s also news from the past.
Bonnie Hunt. The whack-a-mole of the entertainment business. Nothing of hers ever sticks and yet she always gets a show.
Don’t get me wrong, I like her but she’s gotta be one hell of a saleswoman to manage to keep on getting starring opportunities on TV
Has no one told Ben Stiller what working with Bonnie is like?… dont tell him, it will be quite a nice hollywood surprise…
God bless Bonnie but anything she tries out in Hollywood, whether they be talk shows or sitcoms and such, just ends up getting canceled after a season or two anyways. Maybe she needs to explore a different line of work so she can stop humiliating herself with all these bad shows she’s on. She’s a trooper, that’s for sure.
Bonnie is the greatest!
Life with Bonnie was terrific!
Bonnie and Ben, two smart and talented people, I’ll watch this. Can’t wait!
Can’t wait to have Bonnie back!!! Looking forward to seeing her work again and having her on weekly!
Just to back up some of the above statements:
“The Building”: CANCELLED
“Life With Bonnie”: CANCELLED
“Bonnie”: CANCELLED
“The Bonnie Hunt Show”: CANCELLED
ABC: “Get me Bonnie Hunt!!”
Out of many failures come great successes! I love anything Bonnie does. She’s one hell of a person!
ben hasnt been funny in a decade and bonnie has never been funny
I suppose you are great at what you do Steve. Many people probably admire you, eh?
I admire Bonnie Hunt as a entertainer and as a human being!
Really glad to see Bonnie & Don Lake back together writing and Bonnie performing (and any Second City vets?)! When does it air? Will definitely watch it.
Love Bonnie so much. But each of her shows have been basically the same Chicago/Improv thing, with many of the same cast members each time out. Love that she keeps trying, and employing her buddies, but I don’t get why the networks keep going to the same well.
Am looking forward to seeing Bonnie back on t.v. again. I have missed her wonderful humor. Will absolutely watch!
I like Bonnie, but she is the all time sweepstakes winner in the category of “Desperately needs to be cast as a supporting player but is always cast as the lead.”
Bonnie Hunt is a fantastic comedian, a beautiful woman — she showed quick wit on her talk show, and on other’s talkers. But I agree with “Sparky”, she’d probably find far more consistent success in supporting roles (as she did in Jerry MacQuire) rather than in leads.
Especially in this teen-to-twenties dominated marketplace.
Welcome back to TV, Bonnie. I still miss your entertaining talk show and think of it often. Much success on this new venture.
This is great news because there’s no quicker wit than Bonnie Hunt. Fingers crossed she’s back on tv soon!
Ok, once again here’s me: Bonnie works great on her own but it’d be awesome if she had someone else co-starring to be her down-to-earth anchor. Enter a Steve Martin-type. Someone that can warmly appeal to her sense of irony and kindly ask her what she thinks as insight whenever her character is feeling melodramatic.
So happy to hear that Bonnie will be back. I’ve missed her and hoping that this one lasts a long time. Good Luck, Bonnie!
Maybe this time will be the charm. And for the record: CBS didn’t cancel “The Building” – Bonnie did it herself, rather than let CBS bastardize her creation. The show actually had a full season pickup order, but they wanted Bonnie to fire her entire cast and replace them with name actors they had under contract. Bonnie asked, “What happens if I don’t?” CBS told her, “Then we cancel your show.” Bonnie didn’t even flinch when she replied, “Well, then I guess we’re canceled.” (When you’ve been a cancer nurse like Bonnie was, you don’t kowtow to anybody.) You can’t buy loyalty like that.
