EXCLUSIVE: Bill Cosby has signed with CAA, a move that ends a remarkable 48-year run at WMA and WME. CAA will rep the iconic performer in all areas. Most of Cosby’s recent activity has been in performing up to 100 live shows each year, and writing bestselling books. So WME’s loss here is mostly symbolic, but it is also an opportunity to note the 48 years he spent with former WMA head Norman Brokaw, who repped the groundbreaking comedian-turned-actor since the beginning of his career.
In terms of length, the only star-rep relationships that come to mind as comparisons are Lenny Hirshan and Clint Eastwood, and Elvis Presley and Col. Tom Parker. Brokaw (who never retired, by the way) handled Cosby back when he became the first African American to star in a network TV series, joining Robert Culp in I Spy. Cosby won three Emmy Awards in a row. And WMA and Brokaw guided Cosby in the creation of The Cosby Show, a mammoth hit that came along at a time when sitcoms were thought to be dinosaurs. NBC chief Brandon Tartikoff rode the Huxtable clan and Cheers to fuel the rise of Must See TV in the 1980s. For WMA, The Cosby Show became one of the most lucrative TV packages of its time, with the agency collecting 5% of a show that became a massive hit in syndication, generating a fortune for WMA and keeping the agency rolling in cash. Nowadays, TV packages don’t make nearly that much.
There was also Fat Albert And The Cosby Kids, the Jell-O ads, the comic tours, and the bestselling books. Cosby continues to develop projects with producing partner Darryl Bell, and while showbiz relationships always end for one reason or another, there’s nothing wrong with saluting the ones that last so long.

From what I hear, Cosby didn’t get along with the Wme tv dept and felt they weren’t doing enough for him.
85 year old Brokaw couldn’t do much.
Fantastic run in these days of disposable relationships. Also, Marty Erlichman has managed Streisand for 50 years.
I demand that Dr. Cosby make the sequel the world has been waiting for. We want to see Leonard Part 7 now what’s taking so long?
Kim Novak is still Norman Brokaw’s client. They have been together 52 years!
And when was the last time Kim Novak has done ANYTHING?
How come no mention of Lou Weiss and all he did for Bill Cosby as well besides Norman Brokaw?
Really, is there no one that wants to mention the mother of all agent/actor relationships? The near 55 year representation of Jack Nicholson by Sandy Bresler.
And how long has Jack Nicholson been with Sandy Bresler?
“Producing partner Darryl Bell”
As in the actor that was on A Different World?! Would be a mighty coincidence if it were a different Darryl Bell. That’s pretty crazy
Elvis was only 42 when he died, so his relationship with Tom Parker isn’t nearly as long (1956 – 1977).
These things happen, albeit rare. CAA will not make the millions WME has made. I’m also sure that WME still has remaining time on some of their contracts with Cosby. Not many artists change agents or managers on totally clean breaks. THere’s always some $$ the incumbent has coming to them.
Marty Baum represented Sir. Sidney Poitier for his entire career and one year, at a CAA retreat that Marty had been expected to attend and was being honored at, all agents were treated to a loving testimonial from Sidney to Marty. Unfortunately by then Marty was too ill to attend, but everyone in attendance wished they had a relationship like theirs. RIP Marty, a legendary agent and inspiration to all.
LIke too many agents Norman does not know when to hang up his spurs. Cosby made the move because he needed an advocate that could get things done for him at CAA. At the hight of his success at the old WMA he had a number of agents working for him including Owen Laster who handled his book career. Once the firm became WME all that was lost and Norman remaining the agent of Cosby was only a matter of time. Coby was a loyal client to WMA making them tens of millions in dollars over the years in commissions much of which stemmed from TV packaging. WMA mad over 50 million dollars in commission on the Cosby show when it was sold into syndication alone. In those days the agency got 5% of the gross from the sale.
Let me also add that Norman Brokaw never represented Clint Eastwood. It was Lenny Hirshan. Eastwood wanted to be repped during his TV days and it was Lenny Hirshan took him on and the rest is history.
