There was a commotion on the set of NBC comedy Community yesterday. I hear hot-tempered co-star Chevy Chase had another outburst, this time featuring the N-word. It appears that the tirade was not addressed at black cast members Donald Glover or Yvette Nicole Brown. People close to the situation say that Chase had been increasingly frustrated and uncomfortable with the direction of his character, Pierce, who is a bigot. After getting fed more lines he found offensive during a scene yesterday, I hear he snapped and launched the tirade, airing his frustration and suggesting that the way things with Pierce are going, he may next be asked to call Troy (Glover) or Shirley (Brown) the N-word. I hear the outburst upset the cast. Chase later apologized. The racial content of his tirade does appear out of character for Chase, who once marched in the civil rights movement, but the blowup itself is not. Chase is known for having a short fuse and storming off the set of Community in the middle of a scene if he is not happy with the script. His feud with show’s creator/former showrunner Dan Harmon last year escalated into a profanity-laced message Chase left on Harmon’s voice mail.
Never one to mince words, Chase has been vocal about his displeasure with his gig on Community and hinted multiple times last spring that he may leave, which didn’t happen. In a recent interview with The Huffington Post UK, he said of signing to do the show: “It was a big mistake! I just sort of hung around because I have three daughters and a wife, and I figured out I might as well make some bread, every week, so I can take care of them in the way they want.” There is more. “The hours are hideous, and it’s still a sitcom on television, which is probably the lowest form of television.” The only nice thing Chase said about Community was regarding the cast, which supports the idea that his racial tirade was likely not directed at them. “I think the reason I have stuck around is because I love these kids, the cast — they are very good.”

Chevy was re-auditioning for the role to play a bigot. Sounds like he nailed it.
Chevy Chase has been non relevant since Vacation. He left SNI after one season made 2 good movies (3 but in Caddyshack he was not the main character) and now we care about his opinion? His talk show was debacle for the ages. Why do we care what CC has to say? Can his ass and move on to real talent not talent that has been living off “Hi Im Chevy Chase and you’re not” for an entire career (if thats what you want to call it).
go away chevy. you are a horrible talent and an even more horrible human being
White people, just don’t use the N-word and this kind of “misunderstanding” won’t ever have to happen. It’s so, so simple. There’s no reason for him to be using racial slurs to “make a point.” The point is to never use racial slurs. He should know this already. I’m not gonna applaud the guy for using the N-word, because there is no “right” context for using the N-word. Who are you really standing up for at the end of the day, when you have the privilege of not being hurt by your own words?
I suppose if you had a grudge against an actor, making him spout more and more profane comments on air could be considered sublime revenge…
It’s almost like society has conveniently equated racism with use of the n-word so that we can all agree that we are making good progress against racism as long as no white person uses that word. We are so sensitive to that concept that everyone (both blacks and whites) goes bonkers when the word is used by a white in any context, even when included in an anti-racism remark. This state of affairs may not be helpful for the broader cause of improving race relations.
he gets a pass from me. I’m sure he wants to relate to his character and not hate him. Like him or not, the guy can do comedy. I’m sure he feels they don’t need to stoop to that level and I tend to agree with him.
I’m a person of color. Clearly, Mr. Chase was not aiming racism at anyone, but protesting against racism, and a sense that his character has been written in a way that is becoming incleasingly vile and disturbing, and thus, is no longer a character that serves a constructive purpose–that being…for viewers to be able to easily distinguish between what is proper conduct, and what improper. He doesn’t want his character to come across as being justified in his actions, or correct in anyway, shape or manner, for as a consequence, it may inspire real-life racism, instead of just serving to make a joke out of it.
Cant we all just get along?
Look at how he shakes off four or five defenders with ease! Fletch…he truly defines grace under pressure.
No one is happy working on the show. Not the actors nor the writers who are miserable too.
He has a fit if the script is poor? He must have had a lot of fits throughout his career. Quick someone call Guinness Book of World Records. The most complimentary thing Chevy Chase has said about anyone is “I’m Chevy Chase…and you’re not.”
At least now it’s obvious that Chevy Chase is a complete and utter jerk and that Dan Harmon was fired for no reason. Hopefully that kick his butt off the show and bring back Harmon. I’m assuming it came down to a one or the other type deal.
Nope, the director is not the boss… the boss is the person who signs their checks. An actor can get a director fired, a tv director cannot get an actor fired (a film director can)…but the head of NBC can fire them all. One way is to cancel the show.
Chevy is an a-hole. Always has been.
TV directors are service guys – highly replaceable.
Someone ought to give Chevy a talk show. He’d probably do well with that.
… Oh, right…
Chevy has to save this energy and viewpoint for when he is on camera and in front of a microphone. That would make Pierce more exciting and layered.
Deceptive! So he was calling for less bigotry in his character; but, it reads like he was a bigot. Seems to be a smear campaign.
Exactly, this is what I thought. It’s hilarious how these flacks lack subtlety nowadays. It’s all so ham handed. Title implies chase offended re his n-word usage. Check. Blurb sites chases civil rights involvement to imply how far he has fallen and disingenuously infer faux befuddlement at chase’s actions, blurb also sites how well Chase gets along with cast, of which, some are black. Yet and still, this blurb is published. Why?? It’s punishment, obviously, by chase’s white writers and white creator(s) of the show. This hit job smear was done with all the finesse of a brain damaged bull in a china shop.
Instead of bitching about the show just leave, if your not then shut the hell up obviously it doesn’t bother you to much if your still doing it; I also don’t think you should write an article that has things saying I hear this or I hear that, your basically writing like a teenage girl gossiping about rumors
Oh jeeze. Here goes a jew trying to be funny and controversial spewing words no White man ever could and twisting it to his advantage while it being excused as some famous jackass being funny with an outburst. Yawn. Go f*ck off Chase. You haven’t ever been funny.
I hope you’re aware of the irony here.
Chevy Chase is Chevy Chase. I’ve met the man. He isn’t past his prime do another Fletch!!!!!! He never succumbed to dramas let him be funny! Tosh could learn alot from him!!!
If someone wants to see the lowest form of television they should look at any of the 7 or 8 episodes of Chevy’s talk show.
I am really tired of all these spoiled, entitled actor-brats bitching about how television is the lowest medium possible. Cue the violins. You make more money doing one episode than most people make in a year! I believe David E. Kelley said it best when asked about actors pretentiously saying that they ‘never watch television’. He quipped, “oh, yeah, I know what they mean; I read a book once and couldn’t stand it, so I never read a book again!”
Seriously, all you whiny little “Hollywood-hipsters”… Get. Over. Yourself.
Honestly, this is one of the better articles on the incident. Deadline’s sister site, TVLine, made it sound like he dropped it out of nowhere like an. explicative.
So his tirade was because he wanted to make his character less racist? There is no story here, just a dramatic headline which plays on people’s expectation of what a tirade involving that particular word should be… Good on community’s p.r. Team For getting the show in the headlines again but this is possibly the most scandalous non-scandalous thing I’ve ever read.
It’s so not October 19th.
This does not sound like a racist outburst at all – it sounds like Chevy was trying to make a point, one that he and Richard Pryor made a LONG time ago in one of the best skits ever aired on SNL. It sounds to me as if the offense occurred between the ears of those who heard the word uttered in their hearing – our society has a problem with discerning when a word is being used to make a point, and when it’s being used to denigrate someone.
I’m with Chevy. The show became completely dominated by Abed and that stupid Dreamatorium, and Pierce was reduced to “guy who makes racist/elderly jokes and then fades into the background”. Every character is now just a one-note gag, and every episode is a movie parody that they just get plugged into.
