The CW has put in development Expectations, a modern reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations, which will be executive produced by Reese Witherspoon. Written by feature scribe J. Mills Goodloe, Expectations centers on a small-town girl with big dreams of making it in the city who is quickly disillusioned by the harsh reality of living in San Francisco — until her fortunes unexpectedly turn thanks to an anonymous benefactor. CBS TV Studios, Television 360 and Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea’s recently launched Pacific Standard produce; Goodloe, Witherspoon, Papandrea and Television 360’s Meghan Lyvers and Evelyn O’Neill executive produce.
Last week, Pacific Standard and Television 360 sold the half-hour comedy Wendy & Peter written by Jill Soloway to Fox. Goodloe, repped by Management 360 and UTA, wrote the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Best Of Me for Warner Bros and adapted The Mountains Between Us for Chernin Entertainment and Fox 2000. Witherspoon is repped by Management 360 and CAA.

The CW twist turns the lead into a young woman? I thought we were past that!
I would assume the main character was already a female before the CW bought the project.
The CW will NEVER be past doing that.
So basically Reese’s manager is “producing” because, what, she’s Reese’s manager?”
The same thought crossed my mine also!
Its 2012 – that’s what managers do now – attach themselves to projects and collect a fee. The better question is now that Reese has hired an executive – why does she need her managers supervising a tv pilot script?! Wise up – too many non-writing EP’s that are just unnecessary in tv development.
Talk about negative female role models. She empowered by taking money she has neither earned nor deserved. Money comes from thin air. Men will give you money for nothing when you are poor and vulnerable. There is just something very disturbing about this premise. Why not just be honest, play to the CW audience and call him a Sugar Daddy. Now, that is a show I would watch. John Bersford Tipton died a long time ago.
I am the first to argue for strong female characters and for being critical when portraying gender “norms” in TV and film, BUT to make such a claim as you have without having read the script is not fair. Also, the show is based off of a…famous novel! A novel which has this very plot point engrained! Would you have said the same if the protagonist had remained the male Pip? Likely, not. I think as women, it’s important to be smart when espousing feminist ideals, or else we risk being written off as angry women on our soapboxes, giving feminism a bad name. So let’s be hopeful that the protagonist is strong in other ways. If she acts spoiled or stupid or imperfect, that’s okay, and let’s hope that the script shows us why.
OH GOD!…IF IT’S ANYTHING LIKE MODERN DAY SHERLOCK OVER ON THE EYE NETWORK, IT’LL BE A TURKEY…WITHERSPOON NAME ATTACHMENT…BIG F%#@ DEAL…MISS HAVERSHAM WILL BE TRANNY…
