Here is one way to get a passion project financed. David Fincher and Blur Studios want to make an animated feature out of the the Eric Powell comic book series The Goon, and they have launched the “Let’s Kickstart This Fuckin’ Film” fundraising campaign. This seems like the kind of thing a studio would be all over, but they haven’t gotten that far since introducing the concept at 2010 Comic-Con and this is in intriguing way to get started, as they describe the plan to raise $400,000 over the next 29 days to generate a story reel that will make the film possible.
Powell wrote the script. Highlander’s Clancy Brown voices The Goon and Paul Giamatti voices his sidekick Franky in a comic that is described as containing “mobsters, zombies, killer robots, giant fish-men, and every outrageous thing in between.” Donors from $25 to up to $10,000 are enticed with everything from T-shirts to limited-edition signed art to private screenings. There is even this pitch from Fincher, who was once very involved in an attempt to do another animated feature based on Heavy Metal magazine: “I admit it — I came to this party late. Chinatown, and the Mystery of Mr. Wicker was — regrettably — my introduction to The Goon and the incredible world created by Eric Powell. I thank Tim Miller — who snapped me out of my Goonless existence when I was looking for material to possibly make into an animated feature, and he suggested I peruse a copy he had (suspiciously) nearby. Of course I marveled at the characters and was smitten with the mise-en-scene, but it was the language — that uncategorizable: Dead End Kids Meets Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummies — that unlikely Powellian patois that absolutely hooked me. If this is your first time, you are in for a treat — if not, you already know how lucky you are.”
Here is the concept trailer they’ve put together for the film:

really?? kickstarter is for unestablished talent to find funding they otherwise couldn’t. fincher wants to make this movie so badly, fund the $400K himself.
Sounds like you’re implying they’re TAKING MONEY from unestablished talent (by which you mean people like Paul Schrader and Charlie Kaufman?). People who want to put money into this aren’t just going around looking for any old Kickstarter project to fund. They want to help because they’re interested in seeing this particular movie. Kickstarter is just a middle man.
They’re idiots if they spend a dime…
Yes, put it on the fans to raise the dough….
How about Fincher just pony up some of that cash I wasted on GIRL WITH A DRAGON TATTOO and put this together himself.
Super talented filmmaker but, c’mon. Just sad.
It’s really too bad Fincher (or whoever set up this campaign) didn’t do any research into proper Kickstarter rewards. Not one of the pledge levels includes a copy of the film and anything that they are selling seems very overpriced.
Agree 100%
Fincher shot the remake of Girl with a Dragon Tattoo for like 120+ days (according to news reports). The catering bill alone would have been way more than $400k. Why would it take 120 days to shoot a film, and why can’t Mr. Fincher finance the damn thing himself? It’s lame.
So, you don’t work in the industry? 120 days is merely four months, if that’s how long it took him to shoot TGWTDT he was quite fast.
120 days = 6 months
Not sure the logic here. A solid creative team for sure, but with a animated teaser out there and this team I imagine the studios can make a call if they want to back this or not. Why one needs to animate storyboards with a teaser already created is beyond me.
BTW the teaser is interesting not great though.
Why would he be asking for donations to make a movie (and that’s basically what Kickstarter is). Someone like David Fincher could easily find someone to invest 400k in one of his films, or finance it himself. Kickstarter is not meant for someone like him to go out begging for coins. And the folks that put up money for this film on Kickstarter are not going to participate in the profits and the “rewards” he’s offering suck.
First rule of showbiz: Never use your own money.
Don’t tell that to the original creator of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY…or ROBERT RODRIGUEZ…or CHRIS NOLAN, etc., etc. Nolan spent a whole year with his own small cast, crew and money shooting THE FOLLOWING mostly on weekends. A whole year! His own money! Are you sucking on the tit of Hollywood that bad LAME SAUCE that you can’t do anything on your own??? LOL!
Nolan did that because no one knew who he was and no one wanted to produce his film so he did it himself. Fincher is a well known filmmaker and this is a big budget project. Why would he pay for it himself? This is the kind of project a studio funds.
yeah and the budgets on those were HUGE, weren’t they? oh, wait…
Not sure how I feel about millionaires begging bus drivers for pennies.
The sad part is that people will probably give him money.
I think it’s great! Not only is it going to allow them to test the story, but also the campaign will help by gauging interest in the project as a whole. If it’s publicized and supported enough, it should help a studio get on board.
Animated films are incredibly expensive, and nobody wants to make anything that doesn’t appeal to the widest possible demographic. It’d be a great thing for animation if this got made! I’m a backer!
Agree with everyone above. Leave kickstarter for the struggling artists who need it. Not the A-list directors that can shoot one Chanel commercial and fund their precious project.
Yeah the dead-end kids and Abbot and Costello really hook the kids these days…I mean what’s cooler than redoing everything from the 1930′s. zombies. It’s got zombies. That’s box office gold right?
I’d be skeptical to give this guy any money after watching his version of ‘Dragon Tattoo’. Just awful.
To those asking why Fincher doesn’t finance the project himself, he probably can’t afford it. Looking at that teaser, I imagine the budget for “The Goon” will be anywhere from $60 million to $100 million, not to mention the cost of distribution and promotion.
I guess if Fincher lived in a mobile home and shopped only at Walmart, he could afford to finance the film. Otherwise, his recent paychecks won’t be enough.
Did you miss the part where he’s asking for 400k??
He’s not getting 60 mil from Kickstarter.
The Goon wouldn’t make $20 million it’s opening weekend…
If it costs $100 million to make it’s just not worth it.
This is wrong. Fincher and company should not be looking to the fans for money. It’s just wrong. 400K to Fincher is nothing.
400k is not nothing to anyone buddy.
Sad that something this potentially awesome hasnt already been picked up and funded by a studio…considering the rush to remake and reboot every existing property, you’d think someone at one of the studios would be willing to take a chance on something new and original like this….if they can make a Yogi Bear 2,why not THE GOON? The comic is great and the talent involved with this could really lead to something amazing.
Because the audience is limited at best for this. It’s basically a piece of fan fiction. So let fans pre-fund it. But no way a studio would be anywhere near this. You make the film for 20 million maybe…but as a studio animated feature…never make its money back.
David Fincher, I love your movies, but I just lost respect for you…Pay the $400K yourself instead of asking people to fork over the bill, who don’t have money in the bank like yourself. We didn’t get paid millions to direct films, but we did pay to go see them…that should be the only money you ever ask for. This is disheartening, you should lose fans over this before you gain any to make your film.
Your comment is very silly Willie. You watch a film because you think you’re going to like it not because you’re doing the director a favour. And fans are people who like his work, why should they stop liking his work all of a sudden?
This is disgusting and so obnoxious. Fincher and his pals are wealthy they don’t need to use Kickstarter to con money from fan boys. Such arrogance. Fincher shold be happy to spend his own money for this. So gross and such a disgrace. I hope they don’t get any money but they will definitely get some they are con men. Screw them.
Con men? Wouldn’t that suggest fans get nothing in return? That’s jut not the case. And what’s the problem with fan boys choosing to spend money on it if they want? They get stuff in return and there’s no requirement whatsoever.
Also, Kickstarter is not just a way of making money but of generating interest. If they reach their goal of $400,000, that wouldn’t just help jump-start their movie, but demonstrate that there is a significant amount of interest in it.
Well so far they found 376 suckers who have already given them $24,072. If you go to their Kickstarter page you see just how tawdry they are in their intro video it’s supposed to be funny it’s just annoying as hell.
Let’s call Kickstarter what it really is: begging. More polished with nice presentations, but you’re not offering to work for hire, nor are you offering investment. Sure, there is a list of rewards, but they’re the equivalent of smearing a windshield with a dirty squidgee. Why is one of the world’s most successful directors begging? He should be able to put the money in himself if he truly believes, or go to a wealthy investor who has deep pockets. Asking regular joes and janes to part with hard earned cash just isn’t cool. Particularly when making this $400k masterpiece doesn’t guarantee the film will get made. I’ll save my Kickstarter money for people who haven’t made films with Brad Pitt, Jodie Foster and Daniel Craig.
People who pay for it WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE. So they’re choosing to support it. Simple as that. “Begging” is your word, but wouldn’t “asking” be at least equally appropriate? Seeing as how they’re not calling your house or approaching you on the street or even making any real effort to get YOU to fork over your hard-earned cash?
WOW! Hollywood millionaires asking for 400K on a FUNDRAISING website. Generally, fundraising should be for charity.
“Generally, fundraising should be for charity.” Are you at all familiar with Kickstarter? Charity fundraising is not what it’s for. In fact, it’s prohibited
Why let something like reading the article get in the way of hurling some cheap insults?
I find it interesting the comments pretty much lean one way or the other, most negative: either Fincher is duping consumers because the product isn’t credible or he’s trolling among amateurs and should be footing the bill himself. I don’t agree with either and here’s why.
There are too many films coming out — most of which bomb — and the studios need a better filter. Kickstarter will provide that probably even better than film festivals which don’t gauge consumer demand; instead they gauge artistic quality, which is fine but not enough. This will lessen risk. Also it could ensure the correct amount of investment. For instance, what if there’s demand but it’s limited? Well, then you know you can invest a lower amount and do a shorter run. Ultimately directors, whether established or not, coming to Kickstarter could mean a higher likelihood of movies coming out that consumers actually are eager to see. And that’s a good thing.
All the animators I know are lining up to donate to this thing. We would love to work in a world where films like this got made. CG films should be able to be anything, as long as budgets are controlled, and the risks are reasonable. I think this film could see profit at a 40-60mil budget.
Blur Studio is trying to do something unique for their first theatrical feature, and I commend them. 400k won’t come close to covering the cost of a story reel, they’ll be donating a hell of a lot of time, equipment etc to pull it off for that money.
To simplify it down to saying that Fincher is greedy is unfair. Fincher, Blur, and the voice actors have already put in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of time/studio resources to get this trailer made.
Kickstarter can be more than just a small indie financing site, it can be a place for movie fans to throw their support behind projects would otherwise get passed over. If some of these films gain traction, it may open up the studio system to widening their criteria of what they’ll make.
No need to hate on it, there are a ton of us that couldn’t be more excited or supportive.
So many player haters in these comments, it’s outrageous. I think this project looks awesome, and this is exactly why Fincher is an innovative filmmaker. He’s doing what it takes to push a project that he believes in further towards the goal of getting made.
Kickstarter projects on the whole should take a page from the work put into this project – it’s selling more than just a vague dream. If you don’t like it, I encourage you to make something better. I’ll contribute to your campaign.
How much does Finchy get to “direct this”? If I give, I want an audit.
He’s not directing it. Just producing.
It’s great! Yeah! We give our hard earned money to the same millionaires in the Hollywood system who don’t want a damn thing to do with us except buying tickets for their movies! Love it! Where do I sign up for this public self humiliation and utter disbelief in my own talents and work ethic?! I am a big fan of Fincher’s work. He’s influenced my own. I’m so sick of THOSE already in the system who are sinking to such a low level of thinking they SHOULD actually be begging for money from working class fans to do the same stuff they easily do in the Hollywood studio system. How’s this for an idea Fincher, and those who support this in the studio system: why don’t you for once — just — open the door for submissions of projects from those outside your world? Ya just never know what kind of talent is out there. Amazing, huh? Something, so fucking radical.
