Sony Pictures said today it is moving its Neill Blomkamp sci-fi thriller Elysium onto the studio’s summer slate next year, giving it a August 9, 2013 wide release date. If that date sounds familiar it is: Jose Padilha’s RoboCop reboot, a co-production with MGM, was slated for that spot. Now, it will move off the summer and to February 7, 2014. That August date is familiar for another reason: Sony released Blomkamp’s first feature District 9 around the same time in 2009, when it grossed $37.4 million on opening weekend en route to a $200M-plus global cume. It has high expectations for his latest film, a TriStar pic that originally was given a March 2013 release date. Elysium stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster in a tale about a future world where two classes of people exist: ones who live on a luxurious space station and ones who live on a ruined, overcrowded Earth. One man (Damon) takes on a mission to bring equality to the worlds.
Sony today also finalized a September 27, 2013 date for its Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs sequel, and took its in-development Pixels off the 2014 slate for now.

I’m certainly looking forward to Elysium much more than the RoboCop reboot.
I’ll buy that for a dollar.
MGM needs to release their own movies. Even though the remake of Robocop will probally suck, now it is going to get buried by it’s distrib.
Eysium’s premise sounds suspiciously similar to that of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis which was made in 1926. There was also an episode in the original Star Trek series which had a similar idea.
Yup!
Elysium makes me think of Gundam.
Elysiam also sounds like the last section of The Time Machine with the Morlocks and Trogladytes and also like an old Star Trek episode called Cloud Minders which was also a take on that bit of The Time Machine.
I guess everything’s been done and done to death but since Damon and Foster are in this I’ll assume it’s worth seeing.
“Suspiciously similar?” What is suspicious?
Suspicious? You sound more than a little paranoid!
“and” Bill Fichtner.
I’m looking forward to the TOTAL RECALL/ROBOCOP two-disc DVD set.
Only if they throw in the Dredd remake!
Elysium looks awesome. But when do we get a trailer? Robocop can never come out for all I care.
And this has *nothing* to do with how badly the leaked photos of the Robocop reboot are getting just thrashed by commenters and journalists on all the film and scifi blogs. Nope, nothing at all.
What’s the point of rebooting a loved and well known 80′s movie if you’re just going to make the titular character look like Batman with a tinted fishbowl on his head?
What’s the point of rebooting a loved and well-known 80s movie if you’re just going to copy it note for note? Kudos for the new film for changing things up, at least.
Where the hell is the movie version of the epic fanatsy Bloodspiller?…..It’s actually original.
It’s a take on not only Metropolis, but shades of his own District 9. Still, it’s Blomkamp, so I look forward to it. There’s no copyright on ideas, even your own.
why so much Robohate?
Padilha’s the real deal.
I’m excited to see what he comes up with.
I hope the studio execs have the confidence in their choice to let him do his thing. too many cooks spoil the broth.
Why all the hate on the Robo reboot?
The cast is great, Padilha is genius, and the script is really good.
WOW…UN-BE-LIEV-ABLE on SO MANY LEVELS!
FIRST OFF, this is the WORST date move for buzz-sake since GI JOE 2. It saddens the 2013 slate a bit…
SECOND Elysium sounds like another Avatar/In Time-style socialist message thinly veiling its class-warfare plot. Puke…
How does it sadden 2013?
