First Interview: Seth MacFarlane ‘Ecstatic’ About The Job
Seth MacFarlane’s Big Oscar News (Video)
EXCLUSIVE: I’ve just learned that the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences will announce today that TV, film, stage, and singing star Seth MacFarlane will host the 85th Academy Awards. The Emmy-winning TV animation mogul was chosen in large part for mastermindng Summer 2012′s huge R-rated comedy motion picture Ted: the $420 million worldwide box office hit was MacFarlane’s feature directorial debut, and he co-wrote and produced and voiced the title character, too. The success of the pic gave him street cred with the snobby film community. And it now looks as if MacFarlane’s hosting stint September 15th on Saturday Night Live‘s fall season premiere was a tryout for Oscar telecast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. He did well, especially during his standup where he sang and did voices and looked great and was thoroughly entertaining.

Of course during the Emmys he didn’t find his mark and stood on the stage awkwardly when he was a presenter. But that, too, showed he could roll with the punches and he made a joke and continued. All in all, it’s an inspired choice by the Academy and seems certain to bring in younger demographics which is what the telecast needs desperately to boost ratings. Also MacFarlane is that rare multitalent: actor, voice actor, animator, screenwriter, comedian, producer, director, and singer. He is best known as the creator of Family Guy (1999–present) and as co-creator of American Dad! (2005–present) and The Cleveland Show (2009–present) — all shows syndicated overseas which also should help with international Oscar viewership. MacFarlane will host Hollywood’s biggest night on February 24th, 2013, for ABC live at the Dolby Theatre.
UPDATE: The Academy has confirmed MacFarlane’s selection. Here’s the official release:

This is a great choice for two reasons:
1) It will provide a ‘hot spot’ for Oscar snarking…and, we all know how much we love to do this.
2) It will provide the Academy an opportunity to go ‘outside of its box’ as it seeks to reinvent the Oscars to draw younger audiences. This will probably not work, but it should be fun watching Hawk Koch have one year of media scrutiny as Academy president.
This selection should make the show fun to follow in development…although, the show may not be that much fun to watch.
Good choice!
I like how everyone here is suddenly pretending like humility is somehow a REQUIREMENT for hosting the Oscars lololololol
Get over it, jealous Bitter Bettys.
Seth is young and current and fun! He’s an entertainer. Billy Crystal put me to sleep last year and Hathaway couldn’t save a smugly obnoxious Franco.
GET IT, SETH!
best choice ever.
I say this as a girl in her 20s, why must Hollywood try so hard to bring in a “new, fresh audience” when it comes to the Oscars?! Let MTV and VH1 aim towards the young people who enjoy crass humor, keep the Oscars classy and timeless please! All this of course a mute point. *sigh*
Congrats on breaking the news – I love it so quickly spread. I always come here first! I think he’ll be a fun addition to the telecast, and with this year’s film offerings, the show is going to need all the help it can get.
Let me guess, Stewie will present the Best Animated Short Oscar….
YAWN.
We all watch for the train wreck and if the vid up top with his Dad is a preview well… this could top Franco.
Seth is a rarity in this town: he’s actually a nice guy. First time I met him at a party I told him my brother is a HUGE Family Guy fan so Seth said to get him on the phone, I did and they kibitzed for five minutes; my brother still talks about it to this day.
Have crossed paths with Seth many times since then and he’s a regular guy, drives himself places, no limo or bodyguards or douchebag-filled entourage, he just shows up in a t-shirt and jeans and doesn’t demand special treatment.
I’ve seen Seth host many events and he is as smart as they come, almost hoping that something goes wrong at the Oscars so that he gets to think on his feet, whatever he comes up with in the moment will be funnier than scripted banter.
Every time I catch him on any awards show, he just seems so… forced. Like he’s trying too hard. He’s an average looking guy with no charisma trying so hard to generate some that it makes me cringe. He needs to stay behind camera.
I’m probably in a minority on this one but I watch the Oscars to see trophies handed out, NOT to hear jokes. It endlessly irritates me that an awards show takes 20 minutes to hand out the first award because someone believes it’s set in stone that EVERY award show needs a comedian to “warm up” the audience. We’re already warmed up, we’ve watched the multiple red carpet shows! And those sitting in the audience are waiting to hear if their names are called, so just get on with the show. I don’t know, but do the BAFTA’s and Cesars have a comedian telling jokes for the first 20 minutes and throughout the ceremony? Do the British and French worry about their awards shows’ ratings? I suggest that the producers reevaluate their “common wisdom” and do away with the host. They should also stop trying to convince us to go to the theater. It’s simple–make good movies and we’ll come. Continue to make $250 million turkeys like Battleship and John Carter, we will stay home where we don’t have people kicking our seat and talking over the movie. Moreover, STOP. WITH. THE. F$%#ING. MONTAGES! The only necessary montage is the In Memoriam. NO. MORE. It’s the damn montages, NOT the speeches, the makes the ceremony so damn long. I love movies and I love seeing exceptional work rewarded. THAT should be the focus of the Oscar ceremony, not bombarding us with endless jokes then cutting off the award winners after 10 seconds of a speech.
He is a giant tool who was awful on SNL and seems to believe every last bit of his press. While we’re at it, why not have him co-host with Bob Saget?
will he drink scotch and sing songs?
He is smart, funny, handsome, great voice, quick on his feet. An excellent choice, he is hugely talented. Who else would sign up for this difficult, thankless job? Any better suggestions? I think he’ll be great.
He’s a great choice he’s like Carl Reiner or Mel Brooks were 50 and 40 years ago they were multi-talented performers. Bob Hope and Johnny Carson were good hosts in their era so was Billy Crystal but he’s too old now. Steve Martin was great and Seinfeld would be great but he doesn’t want to do it. Seth could do so well that he becomes a regular go-to guy I can see him hosting this 10 times over the next 20 years.
They should go with the other Seth. Seth Myers.
Apparently the Academy wanted to lock down the crucial 12-17 year old fanboy demographic.
Any first guesses on who his replacement will be?
Clearly this man is only capable of one thing, and has no discernible skills or a brain in his head. So we should all rush to judge his performance months before the actual telecast. Honestly, the way people skip over “not my cup of tea” straight to storming the castle with pitchforks and torches is astounding.
Thank god, someone with genuine talent. I’m an old guy, but enough with the old guys and the self conscience gang that makes the show unwatchable.
Now, I’ll definitely watch the entire show.
I’ll be forever thankful for Seth keeping TV comedy evil with Family Guy. There’s never any cloying sanctimony or feel-good moments. Last night, on Adult Swim, they showed the one in which Lois finds out about her Jewish heritage and I nearly gagged out my diaphragm I was laughing so hard.
But I’m curious, has ABC sold its advertising allotment for the Oscars, yet? If not, they may now be able to charge a higher rate since there could be a lot more of the (disgustingly) coveted 18-34 demo watching (and I’m sure ABC will do research to ascertain how many of them intend to watch).
I think the viewership among people with low IQ’s and lowbrow senses of humor will shoot up drastically due to this selection. Talking bears, talking babies, talking dogs, his comedy is so stupid and dull. I also hate the fact that just because so many idiots like his brand of comedy and have made him fabulously wealthy because of it he now thinks that he is some sort of throwback, debonair song and dance man in the mold of Frank Sinatra/Fred Astaire, etc, or a “swinging” bon vivant like a Dean Martin. In reality he is a man with an oversized head who is an expert at writing comedy that appeals to stupid people, nothing else!
Oh, this is a bad, bad idea. Not as bad as Hathaway and Franco, but bad, just the same.
I was hoping this guy’s 15 minutes were about to expire, but he’s found another 15 minutes!
