The FCC voted unanimously to allow cable companies such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cablevision to encrypt basic services, Bloomberg reported. Prior to the ruling issued late Friday, cable companies encrypted premium cable programming but were barred from scrambling basic channels so consumers would not be forced to rent set-top
boxes to watch local TV stations. The cable companies contended that encryption prevents theft and reduces service calls. Satcasters DirecTV and Dish and telco-delivered services from Verizon and AT&T have been exempt from the ban on basic-tier encryption. The cable industry said the ban cost providers almost $5 billion in lost revenue from viewers obtaining signals illegally. Encryption and set-top boxes allow cable companies to start and stop service remotely without sending a technician.

This is such bullshit! Anyone can see that this is just away for the cable companies to now ad a fee to each cable drop in the customer’s home. In my home I only have one cable box for my three drops. I do this because only one of my TVs is used for watching anything other than local stations. With this new fee I will be forces to pay an extra $20 a month for two more cable boxes that will not be used.
Meanwhile I know that a cable box is actually not required for each drop, since my son is involved with maintaining the cable network in his college dorm located less than a mile from my house. In the dorm they use one cable box to de-scramble for 85 drops. Each one of those drops then only requires the connection of a TV to get every channel in HD (minus the movie channels like HBO).
That sounds like a bunch of crap. I don’t believe anything cable companies say about anything. Im surprised at the FCC, sounds like something that is done under a republican administration as opposed to a democrat one.
Actually, encryption will do nothing to prevent theft since most cappers and people running their own home streaming networks already utilize set top boxes for premium channels and the added advantage that DVR’s supply in playback for pc capture and home network streaming.
What the encryption will do is force people who don’t own set top boxes to buy them and buy default increase revenue for the cable co’s. big shocker, it’s all about money and has nothing to do with piracy.
My fees JUST went up and now we’re going to have to pay even more to rent a stinking cable box? That is the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. It’s just not worth it anymore. The programming is junk, there are tons more commercials (for example, wife watching Roseanne last week counted 16 minutes of show and 14 minutes of commercials!)
Maybe if enough people start cutting the cord then these cruddy cable companies will have to improve and actually EARN our business.
Forcing people to use their crappy set top boxes also gets them ad revenue as half the guide screen is ads. I already emailed comcast and informed them if they force me to get boxes for my TV, I will just cancel altogether. And I will. I can stream the news and PBS.
