EXCLUSIVE: Former Paramount Pictures executive-turned movie producer Karen Rosenfelt, producer of such features as the Twilight and Percy Jackson franchises and The Devil Wears Prada, is making her first foray into television through her Sunswept Entertainment banner. Sunswept’s newly launched TV division, headed by Alex Maggioni, has sold two projects: a drama to NBC and a comedy to Fox, which are produced by 20th Century Fox TV, sibling of Fox 2000 where Sunswept has a feature deal. Both projects are executive produced by Sunswept’s Rosenfelt, Maggioni and Ken Blancato.
NBC drama Town And Gown, written/executive produced by Tom Garrigus (Everwood), centers on a recently defeated senator and former football star who returns to take the reins as President of his alma mater, a midwestern state university. His new role becomes complicated when one of the best and brightest students goes missing and the mystery of her disappearance reveals the complex relationship between the large university and small town as well the complicated lives of college students today. UTA-repped Garrigus serves as co-executive producer on A&E’s The Glades.
Fox single-camera comedy Best Man, written/executive produced by Paul Ruehl (The Hard Times Of RJ Berger), centers on a longtime, successful bachelor who finds himself guiding his best friend’s wife through the realities of single life after her husband runs off and leaves them both. For Ruehl, repped by CAA and Cartel, the project stems from a blind script deal with 20th TV.

Senator AND former football star, now a College President. Well, way to stack the deck with tons of plausibility! After the intro, it actually sounds interesting–the relationship between the college and the town, with an interesting take (guessing not ANIMAL HOUSE to often) on college age kids….
Actually, real life’s already got it beat. Bill Bradley was an Ivy League basketball star and Rhodes Scholar who became a senator and made a serious run for US president. Any university would be thrilled to have someone like him for its president, since the major responsibility of university presidents is fund-raising.
The “missing student” part sounds like “The Killing” all over again. Snore. Good luck sustaining that storyline (without vamping) beyond 10 episodes.
Guess what? Every feature producer is now in the tv game. Just more development. Let me know when it’s something more high profile or actually ordered to pilot.
Kudos to Paul, one of the most talented writers in town.
I agree. I dont think it was necessary to make him both. Makes it harder to buy into. The later part has great potential tho. Comedy show seems like it could be pretty good too.
Go Alex! Great taste! Both of these projects sound like shows I would watch. Can’t wait to see them.
