FilmDistrict has acquired domestic distribution rights to the White House action thriller Olympus Has Fallen. The company will release the Millennium Films-produced movie April 5, 2013, in the U.S. This puts the picture ahead of Sony Pictures‘ similarly themed White House Down; that Roland Emmerich-directed movie is scheduled to come out June 28, 2013. In Olympus Has Fallen, Gerard Butler plays a Secret Service agent who tries to stop a takeover of the White House. Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett and Aaron Eckhart as the president also star. Antoine Fuqua is directing. Mark Gill, Alan Siegel and Butler are producing. Millennium’s Avi Lerner and Trevor Short are executive producing along with Danny Dimbort, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson and Heidi Jo Markel.

Oh well, at the end of the day WHITE HOUSE DOWN is gonna own it -a better script & younger cast plus Emmerich will work the hell out of the action.
Now both films are controlled by Sony. What do you think that means? Obviously they will shelf Fuqua to guarantee emmerich a clean slate for the release plan. Not to difficult to figure out. Only question that remains is, why Avi is giving up so cheap?
Um….so you have read both scripts?
Sony will actually benefit from Olympus Has Fallen when it hits home video. FilmDistrict’s titles are handled by Sony on video so there you go. The trailering will cross over nicely on both DVDs but it wouldn’t surprise me if they avoid that because it may be off-putting to watch a trailer for another version of the movie you’re about to watch. Then again, they would be the target audience if they are watching one or the other.
IMDB lists the budget at $80 million…..Contest of the day—how much is Avi exaggerating on this one?
