Fox has closed a deal to develop Gavin & Stacey, an adaptation of the 2007 British romantic comedy series. The script will be written by David Rosen, creator/executive producer of the MTV cult comedy I Just Want My Pants Back, which also was based on source material — a book. BBC Worldwide Prods. and Sony Pictures TV are producing with the company behind the UK series, Baby Cow Prods. The original series, created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, chronicled the long-distance relationship between a man from England (Matthew Horne) and a woman from Wales (Joanna Page) who start off talking on the phone. They eventually decide to meet, and hit it off — but must navigate their eccentric families and friends (watch a clip below). It ran for three seasons plus a Christmas special and aired in the U.S. on BBC America.
The Fox version of Gavin & Stacey focuses on the key life moments of the title characters who try to maintain their relationship while combining their polarizing families’ lives. Rosen is executive producing with BBC Worldwide Prods’ Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner, Corden, Jones and Baby Cow’s Henry Normal.
This the second stab by a U.S. network to develop an adaptation of Gavin & Stacey. ABC tried it during the 2009-10 development season with Stacy Traub and Hayes Jackson as writers.

No. Just no. Leave it alone. Without James Corden and without Ruth Jones, you’ve got nothing.
I agree. Its going to suck.
Nothing has been said about the show, other than whose writing it (from what I heard IJWMPB was a pretty good show) and the fact that it is an adaptation of Gavin & Stacey. I don’t think that is grounds for judging whether or not a show will suck.
Yeah, just like The Office did without Ricky Gervais.
Oh, wait.
Agreed. The humour is so British, they wouldn’t be able to keep or emulate that with different writers, and without it will just be a different show with a stolen premise.
So, dating while navigating families and friends. So it’s like 87 other shows on the air. No wonder Fox bought it.
As long as they do it well, I’ll watch it.
You’re so wrong – this one’s going to be set in NYC!
They don’t want Corden. He’s fat and has talent.
The only way this will succeed is if they get the right cast.
I hope it will be “crackin” Great clip too.
Not only are we hiring Brits to take jobs away from American talent, we can’t even create original programs, we have to import that too. How sad that with al the union members out there no one has the guts to say, “enough already.”
I think it could be great. It all depends on how the material translates into American culture. If I were writing the series I’d set it in New York. Gavin would probably be a Jersey Boy and change Stacey to a South Boston girl. American audiences would Identify more with this than Welsh. Bryne could be full blown Irish and had moved to the states after the death of Stacey’s dad. Would definitely have to retain the running gag of him discovering “New” technologies thoughout the series. Given the Red Sox Yankees rivalry there could be some great gags over the conflict of team support. There’s so much good base material here to play with that it could be great with the right cast and writers.
