• New Girl has improved a lot since its pilot. The show’s greatest asset is its enormously likeable and talented cast. It has the potential to become a HIMYM-type long-running hit. But the show’s writing still needs significant improvement; even the show’s best episodes are misshapen, sloppy and sophomoric, as if everyone behind the camera is learning on the job. It’s not a bad show, but it could and should be so much better.

  • Agree that the cast is really good and the writing really, really bad on this show. I’ve read some of Liz Meriwether’s feature stuff and been impressed, not sure why the plots of her TV show are so sloppy and slow…
    In my house we try to watch New Girl every week, but almost never make it to the end of an episode.

  • What’s HIMYM? And “misshapen, sloppy and sophomoric” is pretty harsh in my opinion. That’s something I would describe something like The Inbetweeners, not New Girl.

  That one was obvious, “The Goodwin Games” had been slated for midseason from the get go and Tuesday is the only night this TV season that Fox has scheduled any live-action sitcoms on its schedule. You wouldn’t give one sitcom a shorter order of additional episodes than the other three in that situation if you weren’t planning on slotting another show for the midseason lineup on that night.
