After lengthy negotiations, FX has renewed comedy Wilfred for a third season with a 13-episode order. The pickup was never in doubt, but it took longer than usual as FX had been trying to hammer out a new deal with the series’ showrunner David Zuckerman. (Most FX series have their showrunners locked in for the first two years only). In the end, Zuckerman, who adapted Wilfred for American television and has served as executive producer and showrunner for the first two seasons, closed a pact to continue as an executive producer but opted to step down as showrunner. He will still be involved in the show on a daily basis, likely not full-time.
Wilfred writer/producers Reed Agnew and Eli Jorné, who have been on the show since the beginning, have been upped to executive producers and showrunners for the upcoming season. They had been groomed for the showrunner job by Zuckerman. “As John (Landgraf) said at the summer TCA, it was only a matter of time before we picked up the show, we just had to work some things out,” said FX’s EVP Nick Grad. “David Zuckerman has done an amazing job adapting and reconceiving Wilfred for FX. It was his decision to step down from the Showrunner’s post, but we’re very happy he is going to stay involved with the show. Both we and David have great faith in the ability of Reed and Eli to seamlessly step up and take over the reins. I have no doubt they’ll do a great job.” Writers are expected to convene to begin work on Season 3 sometime this month.
FX Prods.’ Wilfred, an adaptation of Jason Gann and Adam Zwar’s Australian comedy, stars Elijah Wood and Gann as a guy and his neighbor’s foul-mouthed, pot-smoking dog. Wilfred joins Louie, which was picked up for a fourth season in August. Season 2 of the show averaged 2.63 million Total Viewers and 1.71 million Adults 18-49 per week on a first-run basis. Exec producing Wilfred are Zuckerman, Gann, Agnew, Jorné, Rich Frank, and Jeff Kwatinetz of Prospect Park, Randall Einhorn, and Joe Connor and Ken Connor of Renegade, producers of the Australian version of the series. Einhorn also serves as director. Agnew is with ICM Partners; Jorne and Zuckerman are with UTA.

I’m sorry, but who is this show for? I don’t know anyone who talks about it. What’s the point?
People under 25.
(cue strings)
The future!
I like it. It’s goofy surreal offensive humor with heart.
Agreed. The show is fantastic.
The show has no buzz. The original version did. It would have been better on Adult Swim with a shorter running length.
I’m sorry. AC, really? Because you know no one who talks about it somehow the show is irrelevant…? #typical
I love the show.
Over 40 here
“Both we and David”? Is that right?
FX does no wrong (almost), so it must be.
YES! This show is hilarious and I’m very happy to see it continue.
I love this show and am glad Wilfred has been renewed for another season! It is one of the few shows I make sure to watch each week. It may be targeted to the under 25 age group, but I am in the over 50 age group and find this show hilarious!
I got bored by this show half way through season 2. It doesn’t have the edge of the Australian version. I’ll bet season 3 is the last.
I love this show. So glad there’s another season.

Show is incredible. Keep it coming.
I think it’s one of the funniest, ballsiest shows on TV. The episode with Jane Kaczmarek was one of the most perverse things I’ve ever seen.
This show has steadily lost audience from the premiere on. The first ep was great — but it was largely cribbed from the aussie version. The rest is turgid psychological nonsense.
It’s only back because louie’s taking a sabbatical.
Oh, really? That’s why there was never a doubt about the series’ renewal? If you don’t have figures, just rid us from your negativity. This show is fantastic.
Not surprised that not everyone is into it and that is why it is so good for the people that are into it because it isn’t just trying to please everyone in which case it would end up being mediocre.
This is a great show, who cares if it isn’t “cool” enough to get all kinds of viewers? It has a great story with goo comedy and, everyone who actually gives the show a chance, a good secret to look foreword to the ending for. You’re wrong.
Very pleased about renewal. “Wilfred” is edgy, original and clever. It isn’t for everyone, but it IS very popular among younger viewers especially college age folks. Unfortunately, bc those viewers tend to stockpile episodes on dvr or watch online, Nielsen is giving an inaccurate picture of the show’s popularity. Regardless, FX makes good money selling Wilfred merchandise. They sold over 8,000 Wilfred Halloween costumes last yr. alone & I’m guessing they sold as many this year based on the hundreds of Wilfred Halloween pics I collected off Twitter this week. Plus, Wilfred FINALLY hit Netflix & became a top viewed show there which seems to be increasing the devoted fanbase.
If you don’t know anyone talking about Wilfred, then don’t admit it. It makes you seem geriatric.
zing!
The first season was interesting and fun. By the middle of last season, it had become a “been there, done that” kind of show. Maybe new showrunners can revive it.
Season Three?
I didn’t know there was a Season Two!
Interesting and funny show. Looking forward to a new season.
the show is pretty outrageous, but I had never before watched FX—someone who knows me well thought I should tune in and predicted I’d give it a 7 out of 10–well I gave first season an 8 and second season a 9 —whoa, it’s a whole lot of fun! edgy? yehuhhhh!! tune in—I am hoping I feel like awarding a 10′er this season! BTW, I am 65!!
Wilfred is one of he funniest shows I ever got hooked on—I do not plan ANYTHING on Thursday evenings–it’s a ritual–I gather good munchies and I tune in—truly, it’s hilarious—there are some profound themes each show and then they are danced around in a sometimes-outrageous way—the themes are universal, the treatment would not work out in some more ‘sedate’ countries, but here it does—BIGTIME. Try it.
Fantastic show. Thursday nights have been made so much better on bbc3!! Hurry back Wilfred
I hope this show never ends! It’s the best thing since “Married With Children”!!!! Something always has to push the envelope and this is it. I’m over thirty and LOVE IT!
This show is amazing! Dark and deep with cynical humor. It IS the future.
People who do not like this show, are “simple” and cannot wrap their brains around anything that requires thought. This show is ground breaking, and I never miss an episode.
I LOVE the show! It’s better then the bullshit that’s on, like “reality” shows.
37 here and I dig it. Found it on Netflix and never saw the original Aussie version as it’s not on Netflix. Can’t wait for season 2 to finally be released for streaming. It’s like if Donnie Darko was funny or edgy and enjoyed the pleasures of Cannabis as well.
I love this show!!! I´m wating for the next season
I love the show! Many people have didferent interests in shows. If we love Wilfred then let us be. If you don’t like it….how did you even got here. Really? Who did you appear to be reading how the show Wilfred will be renewed for a new season???
