GMA’s steady rise in ratings over rival NBC’s Today in the past few months shows no sign of slowing down. GMA opened the 2012-13 season as the No. 1 morning news program in both Total Viewers (4.95 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.9 million). This marks the first time in 20 years that GMA won premiere week in Total Viewers and in 21 years in the key adult news demo – since the premiere weeks of the 1992-93 and 1991-92 seasons, respectively.
Compared to the premiere week of the 2011-12 season (4.8 million and 1.86 million, respectively, on w/o 9/19/11), GMA improved on both Total Viewers (+2%) and Adults 25-54 (+4%). The ABC morning news program saw its most-watched premiere week in 7 years and strongest in Adults 25-54 in 5 years – since the premiere weeks of the 2005-06 and 2007-08 seasons.
For the month of September 2012, Good Morning America won in Total Viewers (5.0 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.9 million), according to Nielsen Media Research, delivering its first monthly win in the key adult news demo in more than 18 years – since August 1994.

Wow. Good thing they dumped Ann Curry, huh? Dopes.
Savannah Guthrie is the downfall of The Today Show and NBC News. She is a good reporter but should not be an anchor -not star material. very awkward body language and phony smile. When she is on people change the channel.
Agreed. Savannah is ratings posion. She filled in for Brian Williams last week and Diane Sawyer came within 40,000 viewers of Nightly News?
Yep… pinning the ratings slide on Ann Curry and then cutting her throat on live television was a BRILLIANT move. They were still number one, by the way, when they canned Ann.
The Today Show’s freefall will continue because once people switch to GMA, they’ll see it is a better program. The anchors seem to actually like each other and it makes Today look like a downer, which it is. The executive producer, who fired Ann Curry in a demeaning manner, should be canned. Matt Lauer will never recover his fan-base because he’s been exposed as a total phony nice guy and backstabber. I’d bet The Today Show will have a wholesale housecleaning within 18 months. The show has lost its edge and audience. I don’t feel sorry for NBC, but I do for poor Al Roker. He’s the only bright spot on the show.
I haven’t watched the Today show since they treated Ann so horribly and fired her. After being a loyal Today viewer for decades, I switched to Good Morning America. But, I do miss Al. Wish he could jump-ship and come over to GMA.
Love how NBC is trying to bone Guthrie up on her anchoring skills by throwing her into the lead Nightly News chair, sort of like trying to teach a kid to swim by tossing them into the lake. Too bad the poor thing is just flailing her arms and drowning on live tv.
Savannah substitute anchored Nightly quite a few times prior to her ascendancy to the Today co-host gig. But she’s in an untenable situation not unlike Deborah Norville, viewed as an interloper by Curry loyalists. She’ll land on her feet somewhere.
GMA will continue to beat The Today Show as long as Matt Lauer is the star. He destroyed Ann Curry’s career and the viewers know it and don’t like it. He’s done. The executive producer is done as well. They both have to go. NBC should move now before it gets even worse for them.
Today sucks for lots reasons, but Ann’s departure isn’t one of them. She was AWFUL, downright dreadful in that role. Obviously she should not have been shitcanned the way she was, but she did suck.
All these shows rely on variations of the same tired formula, with the only real difference being chemistry. That’s something Matt had with Katie -and 10fold with Meredith. They all rode a nice long wave. When Meredith left the balloon deflated. That”s all. Nothing lasts forever.
Matt knew this would happen, begged Meredith not to leave and knew Ann would be awful from her many years as an awkward fill in. Once Ann was in and indeed hopeless, Meredith was again asked to return, and agreed to ocassional visits.
Savannah is bright, doesn’t stumble all over the place like Ann, and does thankfully do her homework whether she is genuinely interested in the topic or not, another thing Ann disdained. But she is gawky and she and Matt are not a particularly sexy couple. And that’s the secret sauce.
Ann Curry was used as a scapegoat for The Today Show’s decline and it has blown up in the network’s ugly face. The ExecProduducer, who trashe Ann in the press, is a moron and insensitive jerk. Fire his sorry ass. Make Matt Lauer do a public apology to Ann for being a weasel. Maybe then the show might have a chance. Otherwise, NBC should flush the toilet and start over. Good Morning America will continue to kick Today’s butt.
Why does NBC do these terrible changes in such a public fashion? Are they that dumb?
But in a substantial number of cities, neither “Good Morning America” nor “Today” is the most-watched TV program between 7 and 9 A.M. on weekday mornings.
What is top-rated is a local morning news show usually (but not always) on a Fox-owned or affiliated station.
Once the national media press realizes this, the network morning race can be put in it’s real perspective.
The Today Show could get their audience back overnight by bringing back Ann Curry as anchor, canning Matt, and getting a decent co-host for her. My wife and I haven’t watched a day since she left. But the execs at NBC are too arrogant and cutthroat to make that move (kind of like Lauer).
Hold It stated it perfectly. Ann Curry was not good in a morning show anchor role. I understand she has fans and supporters, and I agree she was mistreated in the end. But that doesn’t change the fact that she, as a serious and professional hard news journalist, wasn’t an ideal fit in the loose, morning show format.
Additionally, as another comment suggests, GMA IS the better program. Its 5-anchor cast has genuine rapport, and the series mixes news with light fare seamlessly. It’s a joyful show to watch. Kudos to the team at ABC for its success.
TODAY received the highest ratings for 16 years; guess who was part of the winning team the entire time? ANN CURRY. That she was never thanked, recognized nor given any tribute for her faithful contributions was reprehensible. That Jim Bell refuses to address the issue of or apologize for the worst transition in television has offended many if us.
When ratings were down earlier, Ann Curry was blamed and publicly punished; when ratings are still down and Ann is not there, Jim Bell describes Lauet as “the heart and soul of TODAY. If ratings are the criteria for evaluating the anchors, then why the blatant double standard, the unequal, unfair practices? Why is no one at NBC accountable for Bell’s bungling? Someone needs to fire Bell!
