EXCLUSIVE: While AMC is pondering the future of Hell On Wheels, the Western drama series’ creators/executive producers Tony and Joe Gayton have sold another drama project to NBC.
The project, produced by 20th Century Fox TV and Marty Adelstein and Shawn Levy’s studio-based 21 Laps/Adelstein Prod., follows the escapades of Kyle Jones, a recent college grad who can’t find a job and who finds himself forced to courier cash for criminals. After outsmarting the criminals and delivering the cash to their boss, Kyle is offered a job in the organization and the adventure ensues. The Gaytons will write the script and executive produce with Adelstein, Levy and Becky Clements as well as New Wave’s Brian Volk-Weiss, Matt Ochacher, and Michael Pelmont.
This is not Tony and Joe Gayton’s first foray into broadcast TV. The feature writers (Faster) wrote a drama script for Fox during the 2005-06 development season, Southern Comfort, which went to pilot directed by Greg Yaitanes and starring Madeleine Stowe and Eric Roberts. That project also was produced by 20th TV. The Gaytons are repped by UTA, New Wave and attorney Karl Austen.
Hall On Wheels wrapped its second season this month, averaging 2.4 million viewers. That was down from the average of 3 million viewers for the show’s freshman season — but this time around, Hell On Wheels did not have blockbuster The Walking Dead as a lead-in and was impacted by the lack of AMC carriage on Dish Network.

Hell on Wheels was such a disappointment…
Having that credit is not a voice of confidence for whatever comes next.
Completely mismanaged and underwritten.
Great concept and a major step forward for the Gaytons!
I would feel optimistic if this was Ed Brubaker show. Clearly the guy who made Crime comics relevant again could do a better job with this concept. These guys could barely make a decent western on a network that give more creative range to writers and producers then most other networks do on TV.
Can’t wait! Big fan of the Gaytons, solid writers with a good voice for broadcast TV. Love the concept of this show. I’ve got faith in HoW season 3 as well
Would love this… On hbo or showtime or Netflix. Maybe FX. Has an organized crime drama EVER worked on Braodcast tv? Goodfellas without cursing, fucking and visual brutality? Tall order. Stupid NBC execs. Is that redundant?
Hell On Wheels was a good pilot script and it could’ve been a great series, but it was poorly executed at every stage. Very disappointing.
Good for Matt Ochacher. Congratulations to the NWE team.
Big congrats to the Bothers
Hell on Wheels is good classic Western entertainment with an authentic feel. UNDER -written? It was almost a cartoon at the wrap of the second season, with disappointing plot twist that took out the appealing
Lilly character. Hope it comes back.
Man you guys are stingy. HoW is a great show. It’s obvious to me why you think the writing is so bad… it’s writing you have to actually think about, but that’s probably too hard for you guys. The genius of the plot is in its subtleties.
People are complaining about the season finale, how Lily was taken out, poor writing, they won’t watch again, etc…
They missed the whole point: Cullen was retelling the story to the Marshals. They’re faking her death so she can be safe from the Durants (honestly, did you really think he would “parade” her dead body like that through town?)
It’s great writing rendered brilliant by (most of) the actors ability to say so much without speaking. You just have to look out for these subtleties, because every episode has them all throughout. If I’ve learned one thing in watching series by AMC, is that everything they show on screen has, or will have a purpose somewhere down the line.
“Hell On Wheels” is the best show on TV. The script, actors, story, filming–It has is all and I can’t wait til Season 3. Watch it and you will love it.
I LOVE this show! Cullen Bohannon is hot! I loved both season one and two and hope they bring it back for another season. I enjoyed every aspect of it.It touched on many topics that are actually still current, if you really think about it. I thought the season 2 finale had many surprise twists. They HAVE to make a season 3….we have to see if Mr.Durant finishes the railroad, if Lily is indeed dead, if Elam is the baby’s father, and if Mr.Swede survives that fall off the bridge. There are SO many possibilities for this show if they continue it. PLEASE!!
Actually, there really aren’t a lot of questions still waiting to be answered if there were to be a season 3. The Durants are headed for jail. So, no, they won’t be finishing the railroad. The Swede is clearly dead – they showed him face-down floating in the river. Bohannon’s reaction (and the fact he didn’t go after the Swede) clearly indicates the Swede was dead. Lily is clearly dead. Bohannon carried her to the church, then set after the Swede. The Swede even specifically *states* that killing her was easy. There really isn’t a question as to the baby’s paternity. Even if it turns out not to be Elam’s, it really isn’t relevant or interesting. The more interesting question would be “What is Eva going to do?” – as in, will she choose to be with Elam because she has no one? OR will she choose to be alone because she can blame Elam for Mr. Toole’s death since Elam wouldn’t leave well enough alone? There really aren’t any loose ends left that need to be dealt with in future seasons.
