Is releasing this film a good idea, given how much trouble was caused by a poorly-made youtube video that a small minority of muslims were offended by? They’ll be a million times more offended by something with slick production values and a theatrical running time.
Surely the government will roust Ms. Bigelow from her sleep and bring her in for a discussion about the merits of the film. And nobody in Hollywood will have any problem with that. Um, that is where we are with this kind of thing, right?
Huh? The YouTube video was designed to provoke hatred against Muslims: this film is a procedural about the death of a terrorist. How are the two things compatible?
I don’t thing the Innocence of Muslims was designed to provoke anything. It was a poorly made satirical film. If it provoked people to harm others, that is not the fault of the film but it is instead the fault of some to be so weak and close-minded that they feel violence is the answer because they have no concept of freedom of speech.
Agree with you about Zero Dark Thirty. The story of the death of the most sought after terrorist is not comparable to Innocence of Muslims movie.
You know this film isn’t anti-muslim and doesn’t portray Mohammad as a despicable human being. It’s a fact-based look at the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. YOu do understand why Muslims were so offended by the youtube video, right? Not to say I think it’s valid, but there was a clear and predictable reason why there was an uproar.
You know that the same segment of the islamic world that reacted violently to that ridiculous youtube video, lionize OBL, and therefore are likely to be stoked in the same way they when this film comes out.
Ya know, back in 2008, no one complained when Bigelow hired Barry Ackroyd to shoot Hurt Locker. She blatantly jacked Paul Greengrass’s DP and stole his aesthetic in her approach to directiing that film. And they gave her an Oscar for it. Now, w Zero Dark Thirty, it appears she is using the Greengrass aesthetic again, although the very talented Fraser is lensing this Bin Laden pic. I dont get it, Greengrass cant get anything off the ground cause of Green Zone, yet Bigelow reinvents herself approaching her films w that Greengrass / Soderbergh sense
Richard don’t worry yourself too much, Greengrass has finished shooting Captain Philips, with Barry Ackroyd. If you want to support his career go and watch the film when it’s out.
Since when do DPs direct movies? Every great director has his own discernible style throughout all his work despite using mulitple DPs. What exactly do you think the director’s job is — Just say yes or no to the wonderful choices the DP gives. No. The great directors tell the DP what to do with the camera and if he’s any good, he’ll improve on that yet again.
“Good artists copy. Great artists steal.” -Picasso
@Richard
As far as I am concerned, Ackroyd did his best work under Bigelow. The Academy agreed, and gave him a nomination.
I think if you viewed The Hurt Locker and Green Zone side-by-side, you would see how much more restrained and striking Ackroyd’s work is in Bigelow’s film. Greengrass is a great director, but Green Zone was almost incomprehensible visually.
The Hurt Locker found its most striking images from its stillest moments — the overhead shot of Renner pulling up the bomb, the one-two shot of Renner overwhelmed by all the cereal choices when he returns to civilian life, and the final shot of Renner walking toward the camera as he returns to his dangerous job.
In just the trailer for Zero Dark Thirty, I have already noticed some amazing shots. I predict Fraser will receive a nomination for his work on this film, as will the editors, sound designers, writer, director, and producers. I can not wait!
And suffice to say, both Greengrass’ Bourne films + United 93 are superior to The Hurt Locker.
@captain
United 93 is certainly equal to The Hurt Locker, but saying The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum is anywhere near the quality of The Hurt Locker is so laughable it actually makes you look silly. I loved The Bourne Ultimatum as much as the next person, but when discussing the quality of films I like to base my opinion on the acting, writing, and directing. There were some great actors in The Bourne Ultimatum, but none of them gave performances to match those of Jeremy Renner or Anthony Mackie (or the rest of the supporting cast). The writing and directing could not even come close to The Hurt Locker.
If you found The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum entertaining, I am not trying to convince you otherwise. However, it is ridiculous to say they were more well made than The Hurt Locker. I love Die Hard more than Platoon, but even I can admit Platoon is the superior quality film.
Thankfully the Academy can tell the difference between a great piece of cinema like Zero Dark Thirty and something fun like The Avengers. That is why I am confident Bigelow and many others from the film will be nominated for Oscars.
lets go Clarke.
Looks hot. I’m in.
I wouldn’t worry about trouble caused by this trailer. There is zero religious content, it won’t push any buttons in that way.
Because KB didn’t piss off enough servicemen with her BS portrayal of them in 2008, she’s back once more to make the rest look bad.
Wonder if she’ll blame pirates when this one flops financially as badly if not worse than Hurt Locker.
Honestly, I hope this does well for her critically. She’s a nice woman. Unfortunately, this not going to make a dollar for Megan Ellison and I hope that young lady continues to make movies, as we need more financiers, not less. Let’s wish her success…
You don’t think a $30M film by a recent Oscar winner about the killing of Osama Bin Laden is going to recoup and then some? The red state draw alone will be bountiful.
Do your homework people. Bin laden died years ago of a sickness. this story is a complete load of shit. stop believing this nonsense. clue #1: you kill your #1 bad guy then don’t show his body but you dump it in the ocean out of respect for his religion and fear of retaliation? come on, people, you’re smarter than this. think!
The trailer for Seal Team Six from the Weinsteins is ten times better.
I just watched it. It looks like exactly what it is, a National Geographic-copro TVM, from the director of Touristas. It’s the Guns-and-Ammo equivalent of a Lorraine Gary movie for the Hallmark Channel.
I thought the trailer looked pretty great, though I feel the pic will be overshadowed by other fare come December.
Chris Pratt as a Navy SEAL, though? Hmm…
These comments are obscene. This is going to be one of the best films of the year. How anyone with even a passing interest in movies can fail to realize that is beyond me.
KB is up there with Cameron and George Miller, in the pantheon of great action directors. Greengrass is good, but to say KB needs to “steal” anything from Greengrass is absurd.
Lousy trailer – we know/envision much more sine the 60 Min episode & now book.
Great trailer. Kathryn Bigelow has delivered top fare for decades, but it’s like the numbnuts just discovered her with Hurt Locker – and judge her by that alone. As if she’s some new kid on the block that got lucky come awards time out of the blue. This is a woman who’s delivered at least three cult classics in her own time: Near Dark, Strange Days and Point Break. I would even argue Blue Steel belongs up there, in its own kitschy way. Not only that, but beating men at their own game in a male dominated industry long before that was fashionable or even doable. How many female action and thriller directors do you know of that has had a 25-year career? She’s no dummy and every film from her has been a joy to watch and I’ll be first in line for this one.
Don’t leave out K-19: The Widowmaker. Easily in the same class as Das Boot, except the title turns people off for some reason…
