Tom Cruise has big (really big) shoes to fill as Lee Child’s hulking tough guy in Jack Reacher. Does this second trailer for the Paramount pic prove that he’s pulled it off? The Skydance co-production opens December 21 and the principals are thinking franchise.

Cannes: Un Certain Regard Winners Include Ryan

“Does this second trailer for the Paramount pic prove that he has pulled it off”…NO WAY!
They should have called this film Tom Cruise…because that is what it is.
Well……
They were smart to get Robert Duvall in it if even for a few minutes…..
he classes up whatever he’s in.
YES! McQuarrie totally rocks and this trailer makes me want to buy a ticket. good old fashioned action. great dialogue. and that car, man. come on! this is gonna be a fun movie this holiday. cruise never disappoints. give it a shot!
seriously, best movie star ever. sure, some bad movies here and there, but i’d pretty much watch any movie he’s in.
I do not believe a second of that. Casting Cruise was a ridiculous mistake.
seriously, man, what exactly about this trailer makes you think cruise isn’t going to kick butt in this movie? i dont know the books this movie is based on, but i know good hollywood action when i see it. give it a shot buddy.
Cruise is back. Looks good without trying too hard.
As a movie lover who really enjoys this site, I think it looks like a lot of fun! And Werner Herzog acting? Fantastic!
Cruise could launch a franchise a la Taken, where each movie is about bad guys taking one of his ex-wives. That could keep him busy for awhile. On a more serious note, this seems noisy. Pint-sized action at best. This guy is not Jack Reacher.
This is going to make a lot of money it’s a big hit but it should be rated R if it’s PG-13 which is likely it won’t be true to the books. And yes Cruise is a foot shorter than Reacher is in the books but that doesn’t matter he’s a movie star and this looks pretty good.
I read a few of the books and even though Mr. Cruise doesn’t fit the physical image painted by the author the attitude looks right. This looks like a lot of fun.
Generic action. Nothing fresh here. Story seems like I’ve seen it many times before. And I’m not buying Cruise. His M.I. Ethan seems tougher than this dude. I’ll rent it. Maybe.
the cinematographer so unflatteringly captures cruise’s age…the wrinkles…the bags underneath his eyes…no facial expressions whatsoever…didn’t we tire of that after the myriad willis & schwarzengger crap?…this film should be tracking…solid bomb!…should’ve gotten that brit thesp from the transporter franchise to portray reacher…no wonder cruise’s war of the worlds in the mid ’90′s was the last time I’ve been to the theater…it was truly a traumatic experience…
See, and I thought Cruise looked great with a little age on him – like a man. He usually has a such a fake Hollywood sheen and polish about him, but as I was watching this, I was reminded of the way Paul Newman or McQueen looked in the 70′s – handsome but a little rough around the edges. Kinda hot, actually.
The film is another matter. It looks very ordinary and doesn’t strike me as particularly ambitious. I can’t imagine this generating much anticipation, but then I haven’t read the books.
No, it doesn’t prove that he’s pulled it off. He doesn’t look like a hulking tough guy. He looks ridiculous.
This is not a franchise.
The movie itself looks fun and entertaining, yes…that’s not what people have a problem with…if this was just some random character plyed by Tom Cruise, sure this looks great…but by calling it Jack Reacher, everything changes…because Tom Cruise IS NOT Jack Reacher and can never be believed as Jack Reacher…too small, voice too soft, face too pretty…even little things like coming across like a guy who gives a s***, which Reacher never would…again, anything but a Jack Reacher film, this would be just fine…
Jason Bourne is…Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise. Anyhow it is a MUCH better trailer than the last one. This one makes the film look interesting now.
Speaking as someone who has never read a Jack Reacher novel, I’ll go check this out. It looks like a standard action film, but Cruise always makes first rate entertainments even in conventional genres (courtroom dramas, thrillers, science fiction) so I expect it will be high quality in every respect.
The ending beat is great, but this still feels like a TV show.
Blah. Why do so many action movies have their protagonist driving cars from the 1970s? Seriously, a 40 year old car? Why??
Saw the movie…Tom Cruise kicks ass, as always. Movie isn’t great, but he definitely is.
Trailer isn’t crazy compelling but I love Cruise. I’ll see it.
Cruise seems a little short for Reacher, but I will see this. Looks like a good action flick.
Never read the books, so can’t say if TC was miscast. Not really bringing anything new to the genre, but it still looks like fun…
I’m curious, who would have been a “better” Jack Reacher?
Robert Mitchum comes to mind..
As someone who had never heard of Jack Reacher until they started making the movie, I think the trailer looks very good. As far as I know this isn’t like Harry Potter, where alienating the fanbase would have dire consequences at the box office (turning Harry Potter into an American or a girl). The success or failure of this film at the box office will depend more on the quality of the movie and less and whether or not the character in the movie is 6’5.
Personally, I don’t see the desire to see a beloved book turned into a movie. You know they’re going to have to cut it to shreds anyway (movies being only 2 hours) and the different mediums have different strengths.
Lest we think Cruise can single-handedly re-boot a very old meme(The done-to-death “rules don’t apply to me” cop), he no longer rules the roost, unless it’s called “Mission Impossible”. “Knight & Day” is the only example you need. Sorry, Liam owns those “particular set of skills’ now. Snooze.
Well severelyunimpressed,
I enjoyed Knight and Day and it made $261 million worldwide. So….
Tom Cruise is my favorite actor. Personal issues aside, he’s one of the best leading men in the biz. His involvement almost always guarantees a level of quality in a project that few before or after have been able to boast. That being side, I don’t know if he was right for the role. I’ll still watch it, but just thinking it may have been a role better suited for the Rock.
You mean the “ghost protocol” from “Mission Impossible” is now going to be real in the potential Jack Reacher franchise? Tom’s cult is cross-promoting through Tom’s global appeal as an “action” hero? “He doesn’t care about the law…he doesn’t care about proof…he only cares about what’s right.” Even Hitler left proof at the scenes of the crimes. Proof is always nice, you know? Not a good idea to pursue not having proof as an agenda generally. That would potentially reduce you to Tony Soprano choking off Christopher’s breathing in a car accident. Will definitely see it but for Rosamund Pike exclusively. Love her. By the way. “No acts of terror” here. Move along.
