SUNDAY AM UPDATE: Sony Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s Skyfall, the 23rd film in the James Bond series, opened overseas in 25
markets and grossed a staggering $77.7 million, #1 everywhere. Setting the pace was of course the UK, which opened to an enormous estimated $32.4 million (£20.1M). Smashing the all-time Saturday attendance record, this is the biggest opening of 2012 and the biggest 2D Friday-to-Sunday opening weekend in history there, and the 2nd biggest all-time Friday-to-Sunday opening weekend, behind just the 3D Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. This launch was 76% bigger than Daniel Craig’s first turn as 007, Casino Royale, and 30% bigger than Quantum Of Solace. Of the $77.7M on Skyfall, IMAX is estimating a weekend gross of $3.5M in 79 locations in 15 territories which include the UK, France, Russia, Korea, Bulgaria, Middle East, Kazakhstan and Brazil.
– France bowed with $9.1M, or 39% more than Casino Royale’s opening Friday to Sunday (beating the entire 5-day opening as well) and just 15% less than Quantum Of Solace (which opened during a holiday period.)
– Russia opened to $8.6M, way more than the previous movies especially with that territory’s massive theatre-building push.
– Korea took in 49% of the market, grossing $6.1M, which was more than triple Casino Royale’s opening and 58% more than Quantum Of Solace’s opening Friday-to-Sunday (22% more than Quantum’s entire 4-day opening).
– Brazil launched with a huge $6.5M, the biggest Bond bow ever there, beating Casino Royale’s opening by 130% and Quantum Of Solace’s by 37%.
– Belgium earned $1.4M, up 40% on Casino Royale’s first Friday to Sunday and 17% on Quantum Of Solace’s.
– Norway opened to $2.7M, capturing well over 65% of the entire market and besting the opening of Casino Royale by 52% and Quantum Of Solace by 15%.
– Sweden launched with a huge $2.6, the biggest opening of 2012, 27% bigger than the opening of Casino Royale, and just 4% less than Quantum Of Solace, which opened during a national holiday.
– Denmark also opened to $2.6, the biggest non-3D opening ever there, beating Casino Royale by 23% and Quantum Of Solace by 30%.
– Finland earned a huge $1.5M, the biggest opening in history there excluding previews, beating Casino Royale’s bow by 82% and Quantum Of Solace’s by 23%.
Other openings included Other openings included Poland $2.5M, the Czech Republic $835k, Hungary $425K, Romania $325K, Slovakia (310K, Bulgaria $175K, Iceland $155K, Israel $825K, Portugal $630K.

EXCLUSIVE… SATURDAY: There’s no doubt that strong film reviews and advance buzz are giving the 23rd James Bond movie a big thumbs-up. But this weekend is the first indication of how well the Sam Mendes-directed pic will do at the box office with the Eon Production Skyfall opening in the UK, France and other Euro territories for Sony Pictures and MGM. Sony won’t divulge official international grosses until Sunday morning. But sources tell Deadline now that Skyfall opened as Britain’s 2D all-time biggest Friday opening and 2D biggest opening weekend. It smashed previous records set by the two other Daniel Craig as 007 movies.
Skyfall‘s UK total is expected to be £20M weekend ($32.2M) compared with the first installment Casino Royale‘s opening weekend of £13.37m ($21.53M) and Quantum Of Solace‘s £15.38m ($24.77M) which broke UK box office records for the biggest opening weekend when it was released in 2008. Skyfall‘s Friday opening day of £6.2M ($9.99M) also
shattered Quantum Of Solace‘s previous recordholder of £4.9M. Saturday was expected to be higher and Sunday’s about the same. (Numbers may be refined on Sunday…) Helping total grosses, Skyfall was expected to be shown almost 75 to 100 times in round-the-clock screenings over its opening weekend at some UK cinemas in London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Southhampton. Skyfall doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until November 9th (a day earlier, November 8th, on IMAX screens). But Hollywood expects it to top both Quantum Of Solace which went on to gross $586M (£367.4M) worldwide and 2006′s Casino Royale which grossed $594.2M (£372.5M) making it the highest grossing film in the Bond franchise (not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices).

That includes the United States where all-in guesstimates top $215M – much better than
Quantum Of Solace‘s $168.3M or Casino Royale’s $167.4M. Even better for the studios and filmmakers, Skyfall cost much less than both other films. But not to market, which is why the British press is saying that Skyfall “raises the bar” for onscreen product placement and offscreen brand alliances, from 007′s Tom Ford-tailored suits to Q’s Sony Vaio hardware, to Coke Zero to perfume retailers. Dutch beermaker Heineken reportedly paid over £28M for Bond to sip from its green bottle in an early scene. Grammy multi-winner Adele sang the Bond theme. Daniel Craig reprises his role as 007, while Javier Bardem playing the villain Raoul Silva, and Naomie Harris and Bérénice Marlohe as Bond girls. Sam Mendes was the first Oscar-winner to direct a Bond pic. Meanwhile, Sony, MGM, and Eon are so pleased with Skyfall that its screenwriter John Logan already is writing the next two installments, Bond 24 and 25.

I wonder how much having Adele sing the Bond theme for this movie helped promotion. It’s been a while since a Bond theme was sung by someone who was as popular – at the height of their popularity – as Adele. (I’m not that big of an Adele fan, but she’s admittedly moved a whole lotta product the last few years.)
You have to be kidding.
On a related note, Thomas Newman’s banal effort showed why David Arnold’s still the best choice for future Bond films.
You’re kidding, right? The workman-like Arnold is mediocrity personified. His scores rarely exhibit any personality or style, which is kinda important for a James Bond film. John Barry understood that each Bond film needed a distinct flavor, and each of his scores reflect the world and tone of their respective stories. Arnold either doesn’t get this or doesn’t care, because his scores all sound the same. I do like his more emotive compositions, such as Forgive yourself from ‘Quantum of Solace’, but – after five films – the guy is played out. Frankly, his best work is on ‘Hot Fuzz’ (which makes sense, ’cause that film is a parody) or ‘Sherlock’ (which is actually pretty solid, so I am not going to make fun of that work).
There’s no question that Adele couldn’t push the movie if it was crap. However, the synergies of having her sing and the 007 franchise itself will make this a movie to remember. Just found out that Javier Bardem is the villain. That’s even more reason to see it.
JustFollowing: I agree.
“Been a while”? I guess Madonna and Alicia Keys aren’t big enough names for you?
Bingo !!!
True. But those songs SUCKED!
Madge was old and haggard enough back *then* (when she did the theme song) that she was better suited to play a Bond *villain* – Dr. Strangepussy, perhaps?
The world is tired of Madonna already. Nothing but a nasty, pub-seeking hag and it’s been like that for already a long time. Probably not long before she is pushing cheap products on early morning television.
In the UK, Adele is far more popular than either Alicia Keyes or Madonna have ever been.
Madonna did the theme for Die Another Day and Quantum of Solace was a duet with Alicia Keys and Jack White. Personally, I’m getting frustrated with the big name artists writing/performing songs that don’t fit a James Bond theme stylistically. Adele’s Skyfall at least matches the style, but I’m still not a big fan. If you heard some of the other submissions, there were better choices.
Agreed.
Bond music has fallen off these past few films. I hope they can bring back the Bond ‘style’ and use less popular ‘pop’ music.
Recently bought the complete Bond themes album from iTunes. After listening to them all over and over again, realized “The World Is Not Enough” deserves to be WAY up near the top of the list. As good a Bond theme as you could ask for!
Adele has as much to do with the success as all previous singers had. It’s almost impossible to quantify these things. Her song was ok. The best is still Tina Turners “Golden eye”. That song went somewhere.
On a stand alone basis – “View to a Kill” by a mile.
Movie sucked – song soared.
I guess I am old school. For me it will always be, John Barry’s (vocals by Nancy Sinatra, ughh) You Only Live Twice and Goldfinger, by Shirley Bassey.
I loved “You Only Live Twice” by Nancy Sinatra – she did a great job and the song is very haunting and beautiful. But the best of all is, yes, “Goldfinger” by Shirley Bassey. Fantastic! It’s the Bond song to beat.
I prefer the theme from Goldfinger myself.
“Goldfinger the man with the Golden touch!”
Live and Let Die….Paul McCartney and Wings was my all time favorite.
it wouldnt have mattered on bit, not for a moment does anyone decide to see a movie because of who sings the title song!!!
I found out about the movie’s premiere date by hearing the song on the radio and then hearing the announcer talk about the film….the Bond songs have a whole folklore built up around them and I do think it’s great promo for the film. Getting Adele was a coup – the timing is perfect and there’s only a couple of artists who sell those kind of numbers anymore. (I’m just happy they didn’t ask Taylor Swift to write a song, as it would have been something to the effect of “James Bond Used To Be My Boyfriend But He Turned Out To Be A Jerk”.)
Actually, Taylor Swift is a little better than that. She’s also the most popular female artist in the world, so don’t be surprised if she does the song for Bond 24.
You seem to confuse the US with the world. No one outside the US gives a damn about Taylor Swift. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and a dozen other female artists have more success in the world than Swift.
I really hope you are joking!
“Tomorrow Never Dies”. Best. The bossa nova styling.
If you love Batman, Highlander, Home Alone, Return of the Jedi, and Blade Runner, you’ll love Skyfall!
Too bad it’s not nearly as good as any of those. Javier Bardem does play the Joker better than Heath Ledger though.
Nicest, most complimentary insult on deadline I’ve seen
If ‘Skyfall’ isn’t as good as a Russell Mulcahy film, then Sam Mendes should retire. Immediately.
Bigger than the last Potter? Impressive
Even more when you consider that Skyfall isn’t shown in 3D.
I saw Skyfall yesterday and am happy to report it’s a massive improvement on Quantum of Solace. Indeed, in my opinion, it’s better than Casino Royale.
Interesting to read Skyfall cost ‘much less’ that its predecessors.
They’ve certainly cut no corners on the big screen – it looks great. Having said that, I still can’t believe QofS cost $200 million to make.
it is the bond’s golden jublee movie. So it is absolutely break the box office records WORLD WIDE. This thing is SENSATION than all topics.
I just saw the movie yesterday here in Ireland , the theatre was packed ten films showing , everyone was going to skyfall , the film surpassed my expectations and the start and end are brilliant , it’s fair to say that casino royale on are a new franchise all the old bonds cant be compared to the more superior modern ones . Brilliant movie 10/10
I’m looking forward to Skyfall. I really liked Daniel Craig as Bond in Casino Royale. Unfortunately, Quantum Of Solace was just not a good movie. This film is critical for getting the franchise back on track.
LB would be proud.
Haven’t been inside a movie theater in 10 years — with nothing worth seeing. This I will see. I don’t know what it is, I hate the films being made nowadays. They are really really bad. (It’s all porn now)
But I’m hit with this sudden urge to see THIS movie. It’s a bit weird, but yes, I am paying to see this in a theater. It;’s been 10 years, and I will close my eyes in case there’s any disgusting George Clooney images on posters. That’s right! Even looney Clooney won’t stop me this time.
What Broccoli’s daughter and son have done to the franchise is nothing short of a crime and both should be permanently removed, tragically they cannot as they own the rights. Gone is the romance, pulchritude, elan, grace, aesthetic………, as well the humor and subtleties that made the franchise what is was. Even the “music” has been destroyed. The Bond series has been turned into a vicious, violent, brutally animalistic circus devoid of any humanity or intelligence, purely Frankensteinish, nothing more.
Well, time passes, the wheel turns and we either adapt or we do not. Dr. No would seem very odd and anachronistic if kept on the shelf since 1962 and released today.
I just witnessed a total character assassination by Eon to the James Bond franchise. This product is NOT a Bond film and it reeks of miscast mistakes throughout. There is NO joy in Bond films any longer. I will NOT spend my money to see this again. 1 star out of 5 for me!
Probably a big Moonraker fan!
I actually liked Moonraker. Drax was just pure Evil and played perfectly lowkeyed by Michael Lonsdale. Even having Jaws back was a hoot in it. Now, Tomorrow Never Dies Another Day…
Not so much.
The film is highly praised by critics, and the audience seems to be loving it. I’m sure the franchise will survive not getting your money. I’m pretty sure of it.
Actually it IS a Bond film and the rest of the world will have fun and see it while you sit at home angry.
The last Bond theme was sung by alicia keys and jack white
Really looking forward to Skyfall. A dearth of true blockbusters this year ought to really help the latest Bond’s numbers. Moviegoers are hungry for something big.
I still think Pierce Brosnan was the best Bond.
Pierce Brosnan was a Momma’s boy. Daniel Craig has produced the first watchable Bond films since Sean Connery’s first 3.
Brosa was the TV Bond, a worthy collaborator for the likes of Michael Apted, Roger Spottiswoode, Wade and Purvis, and David Arnold, but not much more.
I agree.
Ian Fleming’s estate must be very happy!
Bond has gotten more popular as they have gotten back to the basics. Bond w as a spy and killerand he didn’t have a bunch of fictional toys to help him do his job.
And you base that opinion on what? The books or the movies? Because Q appeared in the very first Bond movie, “Dr. No,” in 1962, in which he provided Bond his weapon. (Admittedly, not very gadgety.)
However, by the next year’s “From Russia With Love,” Bond was using gadgets from Q which included a tear gas booby-trapped attache case.
And, if you’re talking about the books, Q has been appearing and providing “toys” to help Bond since 1958′s novel of “Dr. No” and “Q” and “Q branch” were referenced as asides in even earlier novels.
In conclusion, nobody knows what you’re talking about. Including you.
You’re wrong, and also don’t know what you’re talking about. “The armorer” provided Bond with his gun in Dr. No (the movie). “Q” wasn’t referenced until the movie “Goldfinger.”
‘“Q” wasn’t referenced until the movie “Goldfinger.”’
From Russia with Love?
pretty sure he saved James’ but a few times in that one.
Not to mention it was the film Fleming said showed him Sean Connery was Bond, someone with class, and not an overgrown stuntman.

Eoddvpj, you wrote “Bond has gotten more popular as they have gotten back to the basics. Bond w as a spy and killerand he didn’t have a bunch of fictional toys to help him do his job.”
Um…Bond himself is a fictional character. lol.
Is there an invisible car in it?
Didn’t see one.
LOL Best one liner of the month.
Wake up Hollywood. Sam Mandes has done a good. Time to make the sequels of Batman, Superman,Ironman etc. etc. more close to the heart
of the story and less mindless action.
They’ve already done that with Batman. Hell, Mendes has cited The Dark Knight as an influence on Skyfall. Nolans Bat-films are about as stripped down as it gets. I’m astounded by your comment
I would love to see less gadgets and more reality. Where Bond has to work with several people in the field, instead of being a one-man show. Britain’s biggest enemy is itself though. It has been sold out on the promise of wind farms. There has got to be a villain there Bond can go after.
Why would anyone go see this? craig is not a “Bond”, not even a man’s man, just a girly boy
Of all the men to play Bond I think Daniel Graig has done an outstanding job and my favorite. Mr. Graig brings not only ruthlessness to the role but he also brings a very human side of Bond that the other actors failed to portray.
Sean Connery set the standard and still wins my vote for best Bond. I think that Daniel Craig is the best since Connery. I agree with the earlier poster that the theme song should reflect some aspect of the film’s content.
Sean Connery looks the best.class and voice. Let us not compare pictures or the females..When we heard about Pussy galore we all giggled a little. as long as a picture in intertainimg..come on now. let us not commpare..Here in Las Vegas I see women (Females) from all over the world and they all look great. so relax and enjo the movie..Yiasou
I have been a Bond fan since I read Fleming’s novels in high school. Dr. No came out just after I granduaged from HS. In my view Sean Connery and Daniel Craig are the best bonds (Connery will always be my favorite) because they are real men that bring reality to the fantasy. My only hope is that the franchise will endure and that a Mitch Rapp franchise will compete with it to give the USA a stake in the game. EWRoss.com
Is it true that this may be the best “Bond” film ever??
I’m beginning to think “Skyfall” could have a $100 million (or even more) opening weekend in the United States.
I totally agree. This movie is going to be Massive. The reason being it’s without question one of the Best Bond film EVER !!!!!! It just might be the Very Best but more importantly it happens to be one of the best films of 2012. Sam Mendes was Brilliant. Roger Deakins cinematography is Dazzling. All the performances are excellent and yet the stand outs are Judi Dench and Javier Bardem.
The film looks and Sounds absolutely Fantastic. Kudos to the entire team as this was the most fun I’ve had at the movies ALL YEAR !!!!!!!
The key to his statement was AT THE HEIGHT of their careers. Really right now there is no bigger selling artist than Adele so he poses a good question.
After all the hype I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Bond is supposed to be an intelligence agent not a superman. When he clung to the bottom of the lift I nearly walked out. The early caper on the train was ridiculous and Bond’s return from certain death would have Flemming turning in his grave. As for Judy as ‘M’ let’s hope that end scene says it all. So much brilliant technical expertise wsted on the wrong script.
I agree. The trailer alone made Bond look ridiculous. Got to keep the credibility of the character.
