SUNDAY AM UPDATE: Sony Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s Skyfall, the 23rd film in the James Bond series, opened overseas in 25
markets and grossed a staggering $77.7 million, #1 everywhere. Setting the pace was of course the UK, which opened to an enormous estimated $32.4 million (£20.1M). Smashing the all-time Saturday attendance record, this is the biggest opening of 2012 and the biggest 2D Friday-to-Sunday opening weekend in history there, and the 2nd biggest all-time Friday-to-Sunday opening weekend, behind just the 3D Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. This launch was 76% bigger than Daniel Craig’s first turn as 007, Casino Royale, and 30% bigger than Quantum Of Solace. Of the $77.7M on Skyfall, IMAX is estimating a weekend gross of $3.5M in 79 locations in 15 territories which include the UK, France, Russia, Korea, Bulgaria, Middle East, Kazakhstan and Brazil.
– France bowed with $9.1M, or 39% more than Casino Royale’s opening Friday to Sunday (beating the entire 5-day opening as well) and just 15% less than Quantum Of Solace (which opened during a holiday period.)
– Russia opened to $8.6M, way more than the previous movies especially with that territory’s massive theatre-building push.
– Korea took in 49% of the market, grossing $6.1M, which was more than triple Casino Royale’s opening and 58% more than Quantum Of Solace’s opening Friday-to-Sunday (22% more than Quantum’s entire 4-day opening).
– Brazil launched with a huge $6.5M, the biggest Bond bow ever there, beating Casino Royale’s opening by 130% and Quantum Of Solace’s by 37%.
– Belgium earned $1.4M, up 40% on Casino Royale’s first Friday to Sunday and 17% on Quantum Of Solace’s.
– Norway opened to $2.7M, capturing well over 65% of the entire market and besting the opening of Casino Royale by 52% and Quantum Of Solace by 15%.
– Sweden launched with a huge $2.6, the biggest opening of 2012, 27% bigger than the opening of Casino Royale, and just 4% less than Quantum Of Solace, which opened during a national holiday.
– Denmark also opened to $2.6, the biggest non-3D opening ever there, beating Casino Royale by 23% and Quantum Of Solace by 30%.
– Finland earned a huge $1.5M, the biggest opening in history there excluding previews, beating Casino Royale’s bow by 82% and Quantum Of Solace’s by 23%.

EXCLUSIVE… SATURDAY: There’s no doubt that strong film reviews and advance buzz are giving the 23rd James Bond movie a big thumbs-up. But this weekend is the first indication of how well the Sam Mendes-directed pic will do at the box office with the Eon Production Skyfall opening in the UK, France and other Euro territories for Sony Pictures and MGM. Sony won’t divulge official international grosses until Sunday morning. But sources tell Deadline now that Skyfall opened as Britain’s 2D all-time biggest Friday opening and 2D biggest opening weekend. It smashed previous records set by the two other Daniel Craig as 007 movies.
Skyfall‘s UK total is expected to be £20M weekend ($32.2M) compared with the first installment Casino Royale‘s opening weekend of £13.37m ($21.53M) and Quantum Of Solace‘s £15.38m ($24.77M) which broke UK box office records for the biggest opening weekend when it was released in 2008. Skyfall‘s Friday opening day of £6.2M ($9.99M) also
shattered Quantum Of Solace‘s previous recordholder of £4.9M. Saturday was expected to be higher and Sunday’s about the same. (Numbers may be refined on Sunday…) Helping total grosses, Skyfall was expected to be shown almost 75 to 100 times in round-the-clock screenings over its opening weekend at some UK cinemas in London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Southhampton. Skyfall doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until November 9th (a day earlier, November 8th, on IMAX screens). But Hollywood expects it to top both Quantum Of Solace which went on to gross $586M (£367.4M) worldwide and 2006′s Casino Royale which grossed $594.2M (£372.5M) making it the highest grossing film in the Bond franchise (not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices).

That includes the United States where all-in guesstimates top $215M – much better than
Quantum Of Solace‘s $168.3M or Casino Royale’s $167.4M. Even better for the studios and filmmakers, Skyfall cost much less than both other films. But not to market, which is why the British press is saying that Skyfall “raises the bar” for onscreen product placement and offscreen brand alliances, from 007′s Tom Ford-tailored suits to Q’s Sony Vaio hardware, to Coke Zero to perfume retailers. Dutch beermaker Heineken reportedly paid over £28M for Bond to sip from its green bottle in an early scene. Grammy multi-winner Adele sang the Bond theme. Daniel Craig reprises his role as 007, while Javier Bardem playing the villain Raoul Silva, and Naomie Harris and Bérénice Marlohe as Bond girls. Sam Mendes was the first Oscar-winner to direct a Bond pic. Meanwhile, Sony, MGM, and Eon are so pleased with Skyfall that its screenwriter John Logan already is writing the next two installments, Bond 24 and 25.

Skyfall blew me away and I went in expecting it to be good. The film is what Chris Nolan wished The Dark Knight Rises was. It’s epic, beautiful and breathtaking. Belting performances all round but Judi Dench steals the show and the more focused primarily London setting worked exquisitely.
5 out of 5 for me. LOVED it!
Seen it. Ignore the haters, it’s the best Bond in 20 years
I worry when something is this popular; so much of what is a hit with others strikes me as trash. But, there are a lot of exceptions – hope this is one.
can’t wait! loving the TV ads that have be airing. friends in the UK said the movie was great. I for one am glad some of the hokey stuff from earlier bonds is gone. some of the dialogue was so lame and made him seem like a tool. Daniel craig is serious but suave.
FACT: The Roger Moore movies were cheeky fun, and featured no scenes of Bond sucking a girl’s fingers in a shower or crying like a bitch. That’s a FACT. Stick the pseudo-psychoanalytical (“peeling back the layers ” crap) up your arse! The more EON overthinks these movies, the worse they become. If you need me, you’ll find me in the 1980′s where Bond was free to be a misogynist pig and cold blooded killer.
Rog seems like an awesome guy, but come on: his films – with the exception of ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ and ‘For Your Eyes Only’ – were journeyman efforts at best. The franchise became a machine at that point in the series, given to AutoBotDirector1 (aka John Glen) to deliver an unsurprising, uninteresting cycle of lame puns, biggerer stunts and pretty mediocre filmmaking, in general. Thank you.
Sean Connery set the standard, Brosnan was the next best. I like Craig but when I see him in a Bond film, I cant get the image of Robert Shaw in “From Russia With Love” out of my head.
Havn’t seen it. However, even though Royal was good and Quantum was so-so, Daniel Craig works for having the Bond persona. (IMHO) He’s edgy, unpredicable, cunning…..definitely more street savoy than sophisticated. A man’s man. We all the Connery Bond was exceptional (except for Never Say Never Again – whewwww was that horrible). Moore seemed to play it over the top, korny, laughed is way out of any trouble. Dalton and Brosnan seemed like Momma’s boyz. Just my .02 cents.
Bond is OK, for a chap that uses the toys someone else made for him….Bond “didn’t build that”!..
Tony Stark, on the other hand, only uses the toys he created himself….
the one that was from the comic Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos?
Bond fan here – all the Bonds are decent enough witht the exception of Diamonds – I know my onions. Saw Skyfall – pleased with all the 5star reviews and hype – nice to read…however…oh boy o boy..was this movie a turkey! Clearly the press are in love with Bond again due to Queenies cameo with him earlier in the year and this Skyfall being a ‘talkie’. Great performances but SO VRY DULL. And the plot..the final act..is..so…so..awful. Opening titles good, last 20min good ( but not a Bond movie and as I say, it is just so badly plotted its unreal! MAKES NO SENSE SERIOUSLY..Bond is ‘rewarded’ for what..basically letting Silva get what he wants..he wins essentially. Its..so stuipt. BUT, worst thing of all is acts 1 and 2…NOTHING HAPPENS except long v v long character introductions. This movie will wreak the Bond films..simply because its received such great reviews..i very much doubt public opinion will be so kind..and next time around audiences may think twice. A shame, im gutted..but really..this was the 2nd worst Bond film..never thought id say that.
I am not sure I can trust your opinion: ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ is just one of many bad Bond films.
Can anyone tell me if the film starts off with the gunbarrel sequence or if it indeed appears anywjere in the film.
At the end.
Calm down people, don’t fall for the hype surrounding this movie. I watched it, and it was trash. Garbage. Pure crap. You get the picture. This is probably the worst Bond movie ever, it’s even 100× worse than Quantum of Solace.
Daniel Craig is certainly bold and captivating but Pierce Brosnan, well, he has to be the sexiest man alive. The entire fantasy was a wonderful start to what an evening should be. Flowers, dinner, the movies and the classic date for people of all ages. Fantasy has always been a part of relaxation for the human race. With all of the stresses of life we certainly could use this and it all seems to be well timed. James Bond……ahhh. An evening out to start rest and relaxation. Good things in life. We should all strive to have healthy lives and I for one will looking forward to seeing another Bond Movie!
You nailed it!!! So simple, Sean Connery, bond, James bond!!! No violence, nothing but 60′s Cool!!!
No violence? He killed all kinds of people.
And didn’t he, like, strangle a woman in ‘Diamonds Are Forever’? Does this whitewashing of the previous films come from nostalgia or a poor understanding of the franchise?
Sad to see how internet piracy is killing movie profitability. With numbers this dismal how will they ever make a profit, to say nothing of make a sequel?
Maybe if they just shut down the internet altogether…
Best Bond theme EVER, for all the right reasons: “Nobody Does It Better”.
Saw Skyfall yesterday and had a bloody good time. Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem were fantastic. Have to give special kudos though to Judi Dench for more than holding her own with the lads… She will always be M to me. Loved Skyfall, but in my opinion, Casino Royale is still the best Daniel Craig Bond film.
Very true, sadly. Bond has degenerated into a muscle bound action figure.
It doesn’t matter who sings the song, but it does matter how good the song is. Die Another Day sucked and while not a fan of Madonna most of her stuff was good. I’m also not a fan of Garbage, but The World Is Not Enough was an excellent song, enough that I will listen to it anytime I hear it.
What about Britney Spears to sing the theme song for Bond 24?
There were a few that I really liked. For Your Eyes Only by Sheena Easton, A View to a Kill, and Live and Let Die. But I never went to see one of these movies because of the opening songs. They were a pleasant surprise.
What about Paul McCartney ? He’s not big enough?
Over/Under Skyfall North American opening weekend will be $100 million.
Daniel Craig is a terrible Bond. He isn’t handsome and looks a bit like an awkward penguin in a tux. Whomever fits him for suits needs to go at least one size larger. I’ve seen mannequins who looked less stiff.
Adele did a great job, her voice is addictive.
I haven’t seen a Bond movie sine Sean Connery was the CURRENT Bond. I just don’t accept another Bond. Kinda like, Michael Keaton IS Batman. Period.
oops, I mean, “since” Sean Connery…..
