James Cameron‘s company Lightstorm Entertainment has acquired film rights to the 2011 novel The Informationist by Taylor Stevens to put on Cameron’s to-direct list after he finishes the second and third Avatar sequels. Those are currently in preproduction. 20th Century Fox will release the film, which will be produced by Cameron and his Lightstorm partner Jon Landau, who will soon go out to writers for the adaptation.
The Informationist, which came out in October 2011, centers on Vanessa “Michael” Munroe, an information specialist whose work is in-demand by corporations, heads of state, private clients, and anyone else who can pay for her unique brand of expertise. When a Texas oil billionaire hires her to find his daughter who vanished in Africa four years ago, Munroe finds herself back in the lands of her childhood. Betrayed, cut off from civilization and left for dead, she must come face-to-face with the past that she’s tried for so long to forget. A second Munroe novel, The Innocent, was published this year.
“This was an opportunity to continue our relationship with Fox and Jim Gianopulos beyond the Avatar films”, Landau said. “We were drawn to this book because of the terrific, compelling narrative and the character, who typifies the strong female protagonists that have inhabited Jim’s work — in this case Vanessa Munroe is essentially a mix of Lisbeth Salander and Jason Bourne.”
Added Cameron: “Taylor Stevens’ Vanessa Michael Munroe is an intriguing and compelling heroine with an agile mind and a thirst for adventure. Equally fascinating for me is her emotional life and her unexpected love story. I’m looking forwarding to bringing Vanessa and her world to the big screen.”

How about True Lies 2 first?
This sounds so much better and more intriguing.
How about Battle Angel?
Hey look, I think that sounds like a great story for a feature. But am I the only one who remembers Cameron saying that he’s only in the business of doing Avatar films?
Read the article. This film is lined up for when he’s done with the Avatar sequels.
I mean, he just said it in May. And then he coyly hints to different sites that Battle Angel is still maybe moving forward after Avatar III. This is a strange announcement.
No you are not alone. I clearly remember Mr. Cameron stating he would spend the rest of his life doing Avatar films. The statement made sense to me. Avatar films appear to be time consuming and he is pushing 60. Perhaps he figured out how speed up the process? I’m glad he will have something else on his resume. While I enjoyed the visuals in Avatar, the story was clearly second to all those pretty things.
This sounds interesting, but after he finishes the 2nd and 3rd Avatar sequels? Can’t wait for the Winter 2018 release…
I thought just a couple of months back he said he was only going to be doing ‘Avatar’ based stuff from now on? He wasn’t even going to do ‘Battle Angel’ anymore.
What gives with this sudden change?
The writing of the Avatar sequels must be going badly, then.
So, we can expect this in 2017?
That set-up seems a lot like ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’.
Cameron is the only one who consistently creates strong women on film. I wonder if its a clever business move, or just a personal preference.
You’re forgetting Ridley Scott.
This seems rather small scale for Cameron. I mean, when he decided to do an intimate period-piece love story …that turned out to be TITANIC! I have a feeling that if this film gets made, it gets made with Cameron as producer only.
I would describe the books as passable. Certainly nothing special. I’m surprised that James “King of the World” Cameron will be directing this himself. Seems like a backwards step for him.
Anything’s possible, but I highly doubt this will happen, at least with JC directing.
Yeah. Wasn’t Cameron promising everyone Battle Angel Alita immediately after the Avatar sequels?
Better yet just forget the Avatar sequels (I don’t know ANYONE clamoring for them, anyway) and go right to “Informationist”.
Or maybe another “Terminator”, that’s what you’re the best at.
By combining “TRUE LIES 2″ and “BATTLE ANGEL” and he will call “TITANIC 2″ : )
Jim you are one of a kind and should only be doing big movies like only you can. After taking a like 12 year hiatus after titanic we don’t have time to spare the way you work so slow. So if you must do this just get it out as quick as possible and move onto the next big budget movie. That said I’m sure this will be good but with Cameron I want epic.
An juicy leading role for a young black actress – this is exciting.
She is white in the book not black
