UPDATE: On Twitter, Jennifer Esposito disputed CBS TV Studios’ account of why she is going on a leave, slamming them for sidelining her and callling it ”absolutely shameful behavior”.
“CBS PUT me on unpaid leave and has blocked me from working anywhere else after my doctor said you needed a reduced schedule due to Celiac,” she wrote.
“CBS didn’t listen to my doc and I collapsed on set. Which everyone saw! After a week off my doc said I could return to work but CBS implied that I was NOT truly ill and this was a scheme to get a raise! It’s been almost two months without bringing me back to work + keeping Me from working anywhere else!… Absolutely shameful behavior.”
PREVIOUS… EXCLUSIVE: Jackie Curatola is leaving the force, at least for now. Blue Bloods co-star Jennifer Esposito, who plays Detective Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg) partner, is departing the CBS drama series for the foreseeable future. “Jennifer has informed us that she is only available to work on a very limited part-time schedule,” CBS TV Studios said in a statement. “As a result, she’s unable to perform the demands of her role and we regretfully had to put her character on a leave of absence.” The studio would not comment on Esposito’s reasons to ask for the significant workload reduction, but the actress has been public about her struggles with Celiac Disease. She has become a Celiac advocate, educating people about disease and helping those like her who have it.
Esposito has already shot her final Blue Bloods episode (for now), which will air Nov. 2. In the meanwhile, CBS and CBS TV Studios are lining up actresses to do guest arcs as Danny Reagan’s temporary partner. First off is Megan Ketch, who will be introduced in the same Nov. 2 episode, titled Nightmares, and is signed for four episodes. (This is picture of her filming the episode.) CBS TV Studios is leaving the door for Esposito to come back. “She is a wonderfully talented actress and we hope that she will be able to return at some point in the future,” the studio said.
But if that doesn’t happen, the studio and CBS will likely go for a permanent replacement, likely with one of the actresses who guest starred on the show. Coincidentally, Esposito was among several actresses tried out as temporary partners for Danny in guest arcs at the beginning of Season 1. Shortly thereafter, she was promoted to regular. Ketch is with ICM Partners.

That is messed up. I liked her on the show.
Blue Bloods is about Tom Selleck and Donnie wahlberg and Jennifer Esposito. This is bad news. It seems like they could have managed this more gracefully. I know Esposito was listed as a guest star in the first season but then moved to top billing also starring.
For some reason I believe espositos account and it seems like it could have been managed better. I think of a show like Svu which had to work around actor issues over the years and did a good job.
Yep, I bet we know who comes out “Winning” on this one. RIP to Ms. Esposito’s career.
I think CBS letting Jennifer Esposito on leave is bad for the show because her character’s relationship with Danny Wahlberg is central to the show’s success. The chemistry between the two leads MAKES the show. I really only watch Blue Bloods for these two I don’t care about the whole family storyline ect.
Big mistake. The dynamic between Donny & Jennifer is great. Switching Jamie’s partner already lowered the show. Keep this up and Bluebloods will jump the shark in a hurry
I’ve worked with her. She may have celiac disease, and I’m sorry for that, but she’s also a NIGHTMARE. Toxic, mean, disrespectful, undisciplined, unprepared… I could say more but you get the idea. CBS probably did what had to be done to keep the rest of the cast from being detrimentally affected by her behavior.
Ah, it’s A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster and Liz Vassey all over again — but this time the Completely Bullshit Sexism network has compounded its misogyny with a bigoted reaction to a disability. Nice going! (rolls eyes)
PS: Esposito should be added to the opening credits.
Can’t CBS get sued for sidelining here and/or firing her for her illness? I love how they complement her in the same sentence that they are are saying “We are preventing a woman from making a living.”
“She is a wonderfully talented actress and we hope that she will be able to return at some point in the future,” the studio said. “We hope?” Her doctors said she can return, what’s the hope?
The ratings will go down and they will add a monkey or a cute orphan.
Well, Crystal’s schedule just opened up. I don’t know about an orphan but maybe Robbie Rist can join the cast.
I smell lawsuit & great topic for tomorrows View if they have decent researchers esp sine hasselbeck has celiac
People are watching Blue Bloods for the chemistry of the complete staff…Donnie W. has come a long way as an actor seeing he had a few attempts in a series b4 this amazing series. Jennifer E. was an amazing part of the series and we enjoyed her in previous series and had been happy to see her finally anchored once more! This is a loss to the series for sure, there is major chemistry between those two characters for the work and investigation part of the show with a hint of personal which is Priceless. Now the whole family together also has major chemistry and Jennifer E. was not placed in that as pf yet but sure she would have been just fine. Understand delays and all with TV casting and the set but perhaps CBS can do something better and set an example to put a positive spin on something so unfortunate. We want Jennifer E there for sure, and we want the series to move forward for many future seasons..this can’t be a road block for lower ratings and more. Don’t give up on Blue Bloods, CBS, or Jennifer E.
I hope Jennifer keeps fighting back. What CBS is doing is wrong. They think they can get away with it because they are a huge corporation… but thanks to the internet, the message can get out far and wide that they are discriminating against an employee because of an illness– and that is against the law in this country!
Unfortunately for Jennifer Esposito, she has a long established reputation for being unprofessional and a bitch on wheels so I can’t see her coming out the other side with much of a career intact. Maybe go back to doing indies and bit parts in studio flicks?
She’s whining that they’ve put her on leave and are replacing her. Um which is it? She can’t have it both ways. If she can’t do the job she signed on to do, she needs to be replaced immediately. This isn’t the government where you get paid NOT to work. If you can’t do the job, get the hell out and let someone who can do the job do it.
But for some reason she expects to be paid for not working? LMAO! Unprofessional and deluded as always.
The fangurls might rave about her character but she’s minor (and not even in the opening credits) so she’s expendable. Simple as that. The ratings won’t drop.
Jennifer Esposito is a great actress I’ve seen her in movies other tv shows to use her treatable celiac is uncouth shame on CBS all her twitter fans are 100% behind her. It started with her and Jackie & Danny are a great together. I love Donnie too but when you change the relationship you change the viewers. Do you really want your ratings to drop the show is not all about Donnie. Who will be next to go because of an excuse CBS wants to make.
I remember a DEsperate Housewife who was allegedly mistreated by her bosses. She ended up with no career, no money and millions in legal bills.
Do not mess with Hollywood’s powerful. They will squash you like bugs.
You sue in this business, you will never work again. Especially if you are a woman. Look at Nicollette Sheridan. There is a very double standard.
There are three truths in this situation: the CBS version, Jennifer’s version, and the actual truth. Anyone who thinks either side is screwing the other without any reason is honestly a bit naive.
But if her disease is such that she can’t perform her duties as an actress, why is CBS wrong to let her go? If she can’t do the job, then she should be replaced.
Because it is against the law to fire somebody for their disability. And her doctor says she can work, which means CBS isn’t letting her go because ‘she can’t work.’
CBS you are looking like a bully here and if Jen’s words are true you are a bully.
CBS bring her back, she does a fine job on Blue Bloods and if what she says is true than CBS should do a story on 60 minutes about her and CBS’s treatment of her. It would be interesting if 60 Minutes could do a story on themselves.
A shame. I really like Esposito and she’s a good actress. Obviously CBS considers her expendable. I’m not sure why they can’t write her part down to a smaller role or less time on screen. She and Wahlberg have such a good chemistry, and if they can get guest actors to fill in, why can’t they get guest actors to simply come in to fill in part time? Any company with a valued employee would do the same. I hope they bring her back, but I haven’t exactly been impressed with the ‘thinking’ over at CBS lately, so I doubt it.
As I have said before, the CBS Friday night shows have been a problem behind the scenes for years. This is only the latest example. But trust me, Blue Bloods is utter lock for a fourth season renewal. So they’ll do as they’ve done before: patch it up, shuffle some creatives, massage some egos and keep going. CSI:NY on the other hand…
Infuriated now I’ve read what she said — CBS made a huge mistake if they think her fans will stand for her being locked out. I won’t watch this show again until I read that CBS has apoloogized.
I agree with other posts about the chemistry between the Danny and Jackie characters. They are totally believable. This is very sad news and hope for the sake of the ratings it is only temporary. Would not like to see another actor in this role.
Blue Bloods is a family favorite at our house. I’m so sorry for Jennifer’s medical problem. Is there somewhere fans can write, email-whatever to show our support for her, and our shock at CBS’s lack of concern for a ‘family member’ at CBS/Blue Bloods.
HOW CAN THE FANS HELP??
REALLY enjoy Jennifer in this show. Seems a perfect “fit”.
It just won’t be the same without her!
Good wishes and good health to her. Will look forward to her return asap.
