EXCLUSIVE: Another popular blog by a twenty-something woman is heading to primetime television, this one with the endorsement of one of TV’s biggest producers. CBS has put in development Granny Is My Wingman, a multi-camera comedy based on Kayli Stollak’s blog GrannyIsMyWingman.com, which is executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Co-written by Stollak and Donald Todd (Samantha Who?), Granny Is My Wingman chronicles the dating lives of a twenty-something woman and her grandmother. Todd, Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman will executive produce, with KristieAnne Reed co-executive producing and Stollak serving as supervising producer. Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Jerry Bruckheimer TV produce.
Twenty-five-year-old New Yorker Stollak started her blog in July 2011 to document her experience with online dating and asked her 76-year-old grandmother, Gail, of Florida, to join her in the experiment. The two started providing humorous accounts of their dating adventures, and the blog quickly took off, generating a lot of online traffic and giving its two writers celebrity status (Watch them below on Good Morning America). This is the third comedy project based on a blog by a twenty-something female creator to sell to a broadcast network in the past three days, following 20-Nothings at CBS, based on Lauren Bachelis’ Hollywood Assistants Tumblr blog, and F*ck I’m In My Twenties at NBC, based on the Tumblr blog of Emma Koenig.
It has been a busy selling season for CAA-repped Bruckheimer TV, which has focused on comedy with three half-hour projects, docu-style military comedy At Ease, a put pilot at NBC and The B-Side, also set up at NBC. On the drama side, the company has conspiracy thriller Hostages at CBS with a production commitment and FBI drama The Bureau, also at CBS as put pilot. Additionally, Bruckheimer TV has an off-cycle pilot order at NBC for The Secret Lives Of Husbands And Wives, which is wrapping casting.

At least this one has an actual premise behind it. But how long can the joke sustain?
Is Betty White available? LOL
AKA Shit My Grandma Says?
Okay, i was being snarky, but I just read a couple of posts and I can see how this got sold. The posts read like 30-second to one-minute snippets of conversations between the girl and granny, and the posts I read also could be A-story or B-story arcs for episodes.
this development trend has a shelf life of about another 2 cycles
Sounds great to me. Something different. Most networks won’t consider anything with an older female lead, even paired with a young one.
This should be a reality show with the two of them it doesn’t need to be a sitcom they are very funny together. The trend is clear if you are a comedy writer you must have a blog for every potential comedy pilot you are thinking of writing on spec. Don’t write the script on spec, spend your time on the blog it has a better chance of selling to a network. If the concept is funny it will work as a blog then it will be noticed faster it won’t be just another script in the stack to be read.
Alternate title: Tales from the Crypt…er, I mean the Rumble Seat.
This concept with Bruckheimer backing it ought to be a surefire winner. CBS is definitely picking up the most winners this fall. There should be no reason they don’t dominate next year. Pair this with 2 Broke Girls and the new CSI-type series from the Homeland guys with Person Of Interest and it’s over for the competition.
Such a great blog! The audio between granny and Kayli is a nice touch.
Seems this could become a winner. Capturing two great audiences, pairing the young & elder, providing there’s substance here. More elder actors interacting with younger – teamwork – is good for business as well as both better understanding each generation; a good learning experience for both. And… it’ll be nice to see parts as “grandchild is my wingman” in this too. Love the concept.
This is going to be so good! I can’t wait to watch it. I think this will be a show with a huge audience type.
This is “throw sh$t to the wall and see if it sticks.” Upside is that it could be Golden Girls meets Friends. The downside is that it could be like that show with Ernest Borgnine a few years ago. Considering CBS has the worst track record, and the most hamfisted approach to comedy projects I would not count on this to go anywhere. At least Wings is on DVD
