In the hours before Hurricane Sandy, Jimmy Fallon opens the show from the deserted NYC streets, then performs his monologue for an empty audience:

What’s the purpose of taping a show during a major storm? Ratings? Having people on the internet telling him how “brave” he is? Because to me, having your crew come in to work with no way to leave (since all bridges, tunnels, and major highways are now closed/flooded) and separating them from their families is not brave at all–it’s foolish, and even selfish. Poor form, Jimmy–I expected better of you.
They’re clearly having more fun than you’re having.
The production probably put them all up in a hotel for the night.
Hey smart guy, Jimmy doesn’t actually run the network. Jimmy is an employee. NBC decided it was better to tape a show and run the commercials than have to pay make-goods. Agree or disagree, but it’s called “running a business.”
Jimmy said everyone was told they could go home and they all stayed so
If you watched the show, you’d know the entire crew was given the option to go home, but those at the filming decided to stay…
Fortunately, he’s on NBC and is used to nobody watching.
NBC is having its best ratings in a long time this year. Check your facts.
Not a high bar to clear.
Being the number one network is not a high bar?
what a brave, brave soul. risking one’s life and the lives of their crew for the sake of selling sponsors’ products. it just don’t get any more american than that. to summarize: risk life for comedy to sell products. for the land of the free. and the home. of the. brave.
Save the sanctimony and take it up with Bob Greenblatt. They’re trying to run a business over there.
Fallon has to do this he couldn’t care less about the sponsors he only cares about his own image and his own ego. Letterman has a new show tonight without an audience so Fallon has to do the same.
This was real awkward to watch.
Why is everyone on this website so NEGATIVE?!? Seriously, if the internet had been this vibrant in the 80′s and they announced they were doing “Raiders” the majority of comments would be about how it was a ripoff and Harrison Ford couldn’t hold his own movie…
It probably wasn’t Jimmy Fallon’s decision, what is the purpose of *Anything*, and what do you gain by poo-pooing a talk show host who you don’t know?! Lighten UP!
I’m with you, potato! Let’s try to assume the best! The show must go on!!!
I just watched gorge fav Andy Cohen … He doesn’t need guests he’s amazing geni.
Doing a show with new commercials is way smarter than showing a rerun and having to issue make-goods, especially with resourceful talent to fall back on. I just hope they hit the Rainbow Room before the taping.
Thank you.
Watched this and Letterman’s audience-less show Monday. It proved how integral a live audience is to these shows. With virtually no reaction or feedback, except for a few crew and staffers, both shows had zero energy.
A live talk/variety show with no audience is a worthless exercise. They should have just broadcast a rerun.
The show must go on. Frankly that’s the best job he’s ever done.
As for “risking life and limb,” that is just an ignorant comment. The streets are bare, as you should have seen. There is a good chance the crew was already stranded in Manhattan. They might as well work.
I can assure you, we are tired of seeing hurricane coverage up here.
Why NOT do a show? As long as the building’s not falling down and workers can be safely housed, what is to be accomplished by losing money and/or sticking viewers with unwatchable wall to wall local news blather?
Fallon/Letterman is one of the rare businesses of any kind that doesn’t have to lose days of revenue due to such ocurrences simply because a town council thinks it’s efficient to just “shut everything down.” Imagine if every poor shlub dry cleaner or diner that could have operated safely, didn’t have to take the catastrophic financial hit enforced upon them just cause it makes life simpler to not operate when conditions aren’t optimal for all?
Neither man is exceptionally brave or couragous. They’re just performers doing their jobs. Obviously they know their shows rely heavily on their audiences and would be awkward. Both are innovative, and had some very amusing bits while providing a bit of comic relief and an odd window into a strange day in NY history. Good for them.
GOOD FOR FALLON< FUNNY STUFF
I thought it was hilarious. One for the archive for sure. It’s comedy, people. Don’t be so serious.
